About the Department

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering gives students a thorough understanding of the basic laws of science while stimulating and developing creative thinking, a professional attitude, economic judgment and environmental consciousness. Mechanical and Materials Engineering faculty are recognized for quality and distinction, holding 20 fellow grade memberships in scientific societies and 25 associate editorships and editors-in-chief of scientific journals. The goal of this department is developing students’ potential to the fullest, preparing them for superior performance as engineers and providing them with the fundamental principles necessary for pursuing advanced study in the diverse fields of engineering, science and business. As a part of the College of Engineering & Computing, our students enjoy experiential learning opportunities and close interaction with WorldsAhead faculty. Through internship opportunities in the industry and hands-on research activities in cutting-edge laboratories, graduates are prepared to hit the ground running in their chosen careers.

Sustainable Energy and Thermal Transport Systems Laboratory focuses on research in solar and geothermal energy utilization, heat and mass transfer, computational fluid dynamics and building energy simulation. Plasma Deposition Laboratory has experimental facilities for coating research for a variety of applications including corrosion and wear resistance, biomedical coatings, and nanocomposite coatings with reinforcement such as carbon nanotubes. The lab is equipped with a 40 kW DC plasma system, multi-axes robot, in-flight particle diagnostic sensor and surface preparation techniques. Intelligent Robotics and Automation Laboratory focuses on a variety of state-of the-art research in mechatronic design of robotic and automation systems, implementationof fault tolerance to mechanical systems, fault-tolerant design, fault recovery systems, development of modular architectures, intelligent controllers, robotics for waste site operations, biomedical use of robotics technology and teleoperation systems. eng.fiu.edu/mme/robotics/.

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering This four-year program gives students a thorough understanding of the basic laws of science in any of the following major areas: a) Fluid/Thermal Science, b) Mechanics Materials and Design, or c) Design, Robotics and Manufacturing. Students may also combine a BS in Mechanical Engineering with a Master of Business Administration or a MS in Engineering Management.

Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering There is an increasing demand for graduates in materials science and engineering from high technology industries. Materials science and engineering is a dynamic field involving the synthesis, structure, properties and performance of materials. This masters degree is available in either a thesis or non-thesis program.

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Provides students and practicing engineers with advanced studies in several areas of specialization. The degree is available in either a thesis or a non-thesis program.

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering Designed to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving scientific and technological environment in the 21st century, this program provides students with fundamental, traditional core courses coupled with specializations in a particular advanced field of interest.

BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering This accelerated program provides talented students an opportunity to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in a shorter period of time. The combined degree program reduces the cost of both degrees and enhances marketability for career advancement.

Graduate Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Designed to provide a vehicle for the career enhancement of practicing engineers and serve the needs of recent BS graduates and graduate students in other programs, these certificate programs are available in: Design, Mechanics and Robotics, and Thermo-Fluids. Professional certificates also available in Aerospace Engineering, in HVAC Design, in Robotics Engineering and in Materials Engineering.
