Letter From the President
Greetings to our Jubilee Guests,
I am delighted to welcome our alumni, faculty, retired deans, and healthcare stakeholders to the 50th Anniversary of Nursing Jubilee Celebration this evening. We are excited to celebrate this milestone in the history of Florida International University and the Nursing Program, as well as our Nursing Alumni, a group that has grown to more than 8,000 worldwide.
We are humbled to honor our 50th Anniversary Distinguished Alumni and Honorable Mention awardees as shining examples of the impact of FIU nurses on the healthcare of our community and beyond over the past 50 years. We are also honored to have our special benefactors, who have transformed FIU Nursing throughout the years, join us this evening as we recognize the impact they have made in educating, training, and graduating our diverse and talented students.
FIU Nursing has supported our region’s workforce and beyond for the last 50 years. With the generous support of Jorge M. Pérez and Darlene Boytell-Pérez in establishing the new 50th Anniversary of Nursing Scholarship Endowment, along with other contributors, we will be able to increase access for talented nursing students who will continue to work in South Florida for the next 50 years. Ultimately, the endowment will reduce the nursing shortage in our region.
Our nurses have excelled in compassionate patient care and leadership, collectively improving the healthcare of our diverse region and beyond. As a result, our nursing program has achieved significant top 50 rankings in U.S. News and World Report in 2024.
Thank you to our FIU nurses for the wonderful care you provide each day. Thank you to our special benefactors whose support ensures that our education and training are among the top programs locally and nationally. Thank you to our healthcare and community partners for your collaboration in training and employing our graduates. I wish the FIU Nursing Program a happy 50th anniversary and look forward to the next 50 years.
Paws Up! We hope you enjoy the evening.
Sincerely,
Kenneth A. Jessell President

Letter From the Dean
Greetings to our FIU Nursing Alumni and Friends,
As we gather to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our beloved Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences, it’s an honor and a privilege to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve undertaken together. Over the past five decades, our college has been a beacon of excellence, innovation, and compassion in the field of nursing education and practice.
We have grown from our humble beginnings as an RN-to-BSN program in a small school of nursing to our current stature as a major nationally ranked college, encompassing a wide spectrum of healthcare disciplines and a variety of nursing degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. We have remained resolute in our commitment to nurturing the next generation of nursing leaders, advancing cutting-edge research, and serving our communities with unwavering dedication.
This milestone is not just about the passage of time; it’s a celebration of the countless lives we’ve touched and transformed. Each graduate who walks out of our doors carries the values of integrity, empathy, and excellence instilled in them during their time at FIU. They become ambassadors of our mission, making a tangible difference in the lives of patients, families, and communities worldwide.
As we look back on our achievements, let us also look forward with optimism and determination. The landscape of healthcare is ever-evolving, presenting us with new challenges and opportunities. Yet, I am confident that with the collective expertise, passion, and resilience of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni, we will continue to lead the way in shaping the future of nursing. Our shared commitment and resilience have built a strong foundation based on compassionate, innovative, and forwardthinking care.
In celebrating our past, let us rededicate ourselves to our shared vision of promoting health, healing, and equity for all. Together, let us reaffirm our commitment to excellence in education, research, and practice and strive to make the next 50 years even more impactful than the last. As we continue to grow, we will hold steadfast to our humble beginnings and our dedication to the community we serve.
To all who have been a part of our journey – thank you. Your dedication, hard work, and support have been instrumental in making the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences the extraordinary institution it is today. Each one of you has played a crucial role in our success, and we are deeply grateful for your contributions. Here’s to 50 years of excellence, and to many more years of advancing the art and science of nursing.

Beatrice Ambroise, BSN ’03, MSN/Ed, RN, CCRN
Excellence in Clinical Nursing Education
Sponsored by Baptist Health
Ms. Beatrice Ambroise received her BSN from the Florida International University School of Nursing in 2003. She subsequently earned her MSN at Phoenix University with a concentration in nursing education. Ms. Ambroise is a certified critical care nurse and is currently the Clinical Critical Care Nurse Educator at Jackson Health System. As her nominator states, “Ms. Ambroise exhibits the qualities of a true nurse educator and lifelong learner.” In her role as clinical educator, Ms. Ambroise consults with the nurse manager to select preceptors for new staff, facilitates progress meetings, and makes recommendations based on evaluation of their progress. She creates education materials and innovative teaching strategies that meet the needs of various types of learners on the nursing staff. For example, her “SCOOP of the Week” shares bite-sized information by email with staff. Her “Tip of the Week for Educators” shares information on developing educational activities with new and experienced educators. Ms. Ambroise also disseminates her knowledge and experience at professional conferences, including presentations titled “CAVE in 10 Minutes: An Innovative Teaching/Learning Strategy” and “Navigating COVID-19 Educational Challenges: Scoop of the Week”. Ms. Ambroise’s commitment to education and mentoring new nurses in their transition to new roles and developing experienced nurses for career mobility was recognized by her peers when she received Nurse of the Year honors in 2017 and 2022. Her nominator states that Ms. Ambroise “has shared knowledge, skills, and experience through the role of nurse educator, creating and cultivating an environment that has supported professional development and lifelong learning.”
Deborah L. Krauser, DNP, MSN ’00
Excellence in Nursing Administration Sponsored by Baptist Health
Dr. Deborah Krauser earned her MSN from the NWCNHS (2000) and her DNP from Texas Christian University (2015). She began her nursing career working as a RN in trauma at Jackson Memorial Hospital and then as a certified adult nurse practitioner in cardiology at Broward General Medical Center. Subsequently, Dr. Krauser relocated to Texas where she was appointed Director of the Trauma Program at the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. In 2018 she moved back to Florida and was appointed Director of the Trauma and Burn Program at the HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. In 2023 Dr. Krauser was appointed Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO). In this position she supports the chief nursing officer (CNO) in overseeing the quality, safety, and efficiency of nursing services in the hospital. Her nominator states that Dr. Krauser “helped institute a number of programs while overseeing trauma and burn to decrease overall mortality and increase the quality outcomes of our patients.” Some initiatives she implemented were establishing the role of the Trauma Nurse Clinician, developing protocols for pressure injury reduction, instituting a trauma alert system within the hospital, developing guidelines for geriatric trauma, and initiating the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program. She has developed and implemented numerous educational programs in trauma related topics for non-trauma nurse clinicians, emergency responders, and ED physicians. Betty L. Perry ’74, RN
1st “First Lady” of Florida International University Graduate of the First Class of Nursing, 1974 Founder’s Award
Betty Laird Perry comes from central Ohio and is the original First Lady of Florida International University. After high school, she entered the Akron General Hospital School of Nursing, which included newly implemented science classes for nursing students at the University of Akron. She later earned a bachelor’s in nursing from FIU, followed by a master’s degree in Healthcare Policy and Planning from Georgia State University. Betty has experience in nursing education recruiting, nursing in a hospital setting, has worked in the university health center at Bowling Green State University, and as a nurse for a private physician. She has served as president of the Council of Continuing Education for Women. While recruiting for her nursing program in Ohio, she met her future husband, Charles “Chuck” Perry, who at the time was recruiting for Bowling Green State University. The Perrys came to Florida in 1967 when Charles was tasked with forming a public university in Miami. As FIU’s founding president, and thanks to Betty’s direction, President Perry was instrumental in ensuring FIU offered a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University’s inception. She was also a full-time University “volunteer,” helping the fledgling FIU in every capacity. Betty later started her own business, BC Golf, Ltd., in 1992, where she was recognized by Cambridge’s Who’s Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership, and excellence in business management. Her other passion, for art, is reflected in the Student Art Award at FIU, which she and Charles created, and in her service on Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places, one of the first public art programs in the country. A longtime donor to FIU, Betty made a generous donation to the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum building, which now has a gallery named in her honor. It is dedicated to student, faculty, and alumni exhibitions. Betty is also an avid musician, having studied piano, voice, and violin.

Nicole Wertheim
Vice Chair, Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation Spirit of Generosity Award
Nicole Wertheim’s journey from her roots in France to her impactful contributions in the United States is quite remarkable. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from Elisa Lemonnier College in Paris, she followed her passion for travel and embarked on a four-year journey that led her to Miami, Florida, where she met her husband Dr. Herbert Wertheim in 1968. Their meeting sparked not only a personal connection but also a fruitful professional partnership.
Together, they founded Brain Power Inc. in 1971, which went on to become the world’s largest manufacturer of optical tints, chemicals, and instruments. Their business success paved the way for their substantial philanthropic endeavors. In 1977, they established the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation, marking the beginning of a legacy of giving back to the community – including transformational initiatives in the fields of healthcare, engineering, and the arts, as well as community-based projects that improve the quality of life for all.
Nicole’s passion for nursing is evident in her commitment to supporting the profession. With her daughter, Dr. Vanessa Wertheim, being a nurse, she has a personal connection to, and appreciation of, the field. Nicole recognizes the vital role nurses play in the healthcare system and strives to empower them to reach their full potential.
Nicole Wertheim’s impact extends far beyond her professional accomplishments; indeed, her greatest legacy lies in the values she instilled in her family. As a mother to Erica and Vanessa, and a grandmother to Elan, Alexa, Ethan, and Julia, Nicole’s influence will continue to shape the lives of future generations.

Jorge M. Pérez and Darlene Boytell-Pérez ‘89, ‘96 Establish 50th Anniversary Scholarship Endowment
A generous gift from Jorge M. Pérez and Darlene Marie Boytell-Pérez ‘89, MS ‘96 establishes a new endowment at our Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences. The Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez 50th Anniversary Scholarship Endowment will address the shortage of nursing professionals throughout Florida by establishing a permanent source of funding to help undergraduate and graduate nursing students pay for tuition and related educational expenses.
“Students from FIU’s Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences represent the next generation of nurses, set to sustain our healthcare system for years to come. It’s an incredible honor for us to support their journeys through this endowment,” says Boytell-Pérez, a two-time FIU nursing alumna. “A thriving healthcare system holds immense importance in fostering a stronger, more resilient South Florida. My family and I look forward to the positive impacts these individuals will create as they progress at FIU and become integral parts of our community.”
According to a report commissioned by the Florida Hospital Association and the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida, the state will face a shortage of nearly 60,000 nurses by 2035. Much of the nursing deficit stems from the difficulty many potential nurses face in paying tuition. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor projects 203,200 openings for RNs each year through 2031.
“This important gift from Jorge Pérez and Darlene Boytell-Pérez comes at a time of major enrollment growth of the nursing program for the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences,” said Interim Dean Jorge Valdés. “We are very grateful for their generous gift and longstanding support of our college, as it will directly impact the lives of our students and increase the nursing workforce for our community. Jorge and Darlene truly embody FIU’s forward thinking, innovative and unstoppable spirit.”
The endowment will provide scholarships of up to four years for full-time nursing students who demonstrate outstanding scholastic aptitude and accomplishments and financial need, especially those expressing a desire to stay in the South Florida community after graduation. Jorge and Darlene Pérez want to encourage nursing and healthcare supporters to contribute to the endowment in order to increase the impact on the next fifty years of FIU nursing students. The support of Jorge M. Pérez, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Related Group, and his wife, Darlene Boytell-Pérez, has been integral to FIU’s growth in multiple areas. FIU established the Darlene & Jorge Pérez Collection-100 Years of Cuban Art after a donation of Cuban art from the Pérezes to the university’s Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum and the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs. Notably, their support led to the establishment of the university’s Jorge M. Pérez Metropolitan Center, an app lied research institute that provides policy solutions to public, private and non-profit organizations in South Florida. They have also established the Jorge and Darlene Pérez Scholars Endowment in the university’s Honors College.
The new Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez 50th Anniversary Scholarship Endowment represents the Pérez family’s 15th gift to NWCNHS. In 2008, FIU unveiled the Jorge M. Pérez and Darlene Boytell-Pérez Basic Skills Lab in the STAR Center, providing simulation education and experiences to NWCNHS students.
