New institute focuses on science, technology, engineering and math
FIU has launched the new STEM Transformation Institute, a multidisciplinary partnership that will pave the way for student success in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The Institute brings together faculty from across disciplines to build a nationally recognized STEM education research group that will develop effective instructional techniques for the classroom. Leaders from all sectors, including business, government and education, have called for increased investments in the next generation of innovators and problem solvers to meet the needs of our increasingly technological and challenging world.

New technique to bring life-saving drugs to the brain
In a study published in the April 16 issue of Nature Communications, researchers from the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine describe a revolutionary technique they have developed to deliver the anti-HIV drug AZTTP into the brain. Professors Madhavan Nair and Sakhrat Khizroev used magneto-electric nanoparticles to cross the blood-brain barrier and send significantly increased levels of AZTTP— up to 97 percent more —to HIV-infected cells. For years, the blood-brain barrier has stumped scientists and doctors. A natural filter, the blood-brain barrier keeps most medicines from reaching the brain. This delivery method could help other patients who suffer from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, meningitis and chronic pain.

Family donates toward Alumni Center FIU’s Alumni Center is one step closer to becoming the new home for our university’s alumni, friends and visitors thanks to a $2 million planned gift from Richard W. Strait ’76 and Marcia L. Martinez-Strait MS ’77. This transformational gift is one of the university’s largest alumni contributions to date, and will support the design, construction and operation of the future Alumni Center. Richard is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association, a member of the College of Business Alumni Chapter, and in 2010 joined the President’s Council. His wife, Marcia, is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College.

Two-time FIU alumnus Richard Blanco joined a very short list of great American poets, including Robert Frost and Maya Angelou, who have had the honor of serving as a Presidential Inaugural Poet. Blanco, who earned an undergraduate degree in 1991 from the College of Engineering & Computing and a master’s degree in creative writing in 1997 from the College of Arts & Sciences, recited “One Today,” an original poem he wrote for President Obama’s second swearing-in ceremony in January.
