Outreach and Engagement SISH’s multidisciplinary approach to the sciences and humanities extends to local, national and international communities. The school is continually developing vibrant new partnerships and programs to achieve its vision of contributing to innovative research and advances in human health. SISH’s departments, centers and institutes engage the community by providing services such as the Summer Treatment Program for ADHD children as well as parenting and school intervention programs through the Center for Children and Families. FIU, in collaboration with The Children’s Trust, also supports both the Parents as Teachers home visiting program and the Power of Positive Parenting for Obesity Prevention program that are offered to at-risk families in Miami-Dade County. To engage the community and teach them a little science at the same time, the Department of Physics offers family-friendly stargazing and solar-viewing events. The International Forensic Research Institute partners with law enforcement agencies, government labs and public corporations, as well as the legal community to provide consultation and training. In addition, the STEM Transformation Institute provides summer programs for schoolteachers.

Numerous public lecture series and film events are part of SISH’s outreach agenda. These include lectures in Cognitive Neuroscience, Biomolecular and Biomedical Sciences, and the Mine Ucer Women in Science Lecture series. The Women’s Studies Center offers a Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender film series in conjunction with The Wolfsonian-FIU.
