April 2021 at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd

Dear Member, It looks like things are starting to return to “normal” around the Club and within the community. It’s a welcome relief to resume some of the events and activities we’ve missed so much this past year. As I wrote in the April 2020 newsletter, we humans are a resilient bunch. We persevered … rallied … got creative … and got through this together. Our busy grounds crew is preparing to plant flowers around the Clubhouse … a sure sign that spring has officially arrived! Springtime is one of my favorite seasons, especially here at the Club. Not only do we see the trees and flowers blooming and the greens getting greener, but we also get to see more of you at the Clubhouse and on the course. The Golf Professionals are gearing up for a great season, starting with five Fitting Days planned in April as well as the Highland Game on April 10th. The Food & Beverage team has scheduled our first Wine Dinner of the year, featuring Echolands Winery. See inside this issue for more information and please call the Clubhouse if you have any questions. We hope to see you at the Club soon!

Please welcome our newest members! Spring is in the air … trees are blooming, lawns are getting greener, Yankees baseball and let’s not forget about the Masters Golf Tournament. April is typically the month where golf starts to pick up here at Loch Lloyd as well. Many of you will kick the dust off your clubs and our “snow birds” will start returning — bringing more action to the Club as the month advances. Be on the lookout for an email for this year’s Pride Club membership. The Pride Club is The Country Club at Loch Lloyd’s Golf Shop “Merchandise Club.” Your $200 investment goes straight to your credit book and you begin instant savings. Get 10% off all hard goods, 20% off apparel and a one-time 40% off apparel-only purchase. It pays to be a Pride Club member. The Golf Shop matches all prices and already has the lowest golf ball pricing in the area. SEAN HANNA DIRECTOR OF GOLF seanh@lochlloyd.com

Be on the lookout for emails regarding Golf Club Fitting Days. In the past, we have hosted a “multi-vendor” demo day when all the manufacturers set up at the Practice Facility and you would have the opportunity to test different clubs. The manufacturers have been trying to get away from these “multivendor” events for years. When COVID hit in 2020, vendors began offering individual fitting days and, as you can see from the list below … we have plenty of opportunities to offer you! See you all on the first tee! Sean

APRIL HOURS OF OPERATION Golf Shop: 7a to 8p Tuesday-Sunday Practice Facility: 7a to 7p Tuesday-Sunday FIRST TEE TIMES Tee times will begin one hour after the Golf Shop opens, weather permitting

Throughout the season we will be hosting multiple Fitting Days. During the month of April, you have FIVE opportunities to get professionally fit with five of the BEST golf manufacturers in the country. See the list below and be sure to RSVP as these events are by appointment only and have limited space. Remember to take advantage of the PRIDE CLUB for discounts on all of your purchases on fitting days. (See more about the Pride Club on the next page!) The Golf Shop stocks a wide complement of demo clubs for members to use throughout the season. If you are unable to join us for ANY of our Fitting Days but are interested in trying out new equipment, please ask one of the Golf Professionals for assistance and we’ll get you set up.

 JUNIOR GOLF  Spring After-School Golf Program All members are invited to join us on Saturday, April 10th for a great day of golf on “Moving Day” at the Masters. Those two combined scores will be your final tournament score. Flights will be determined by which set of tees you play. Winners will be announced Monday morning and Golf Shop credit will be applied to your account. Cost of the event is $15.

This program is designed to develop your child’s or grandchild’s golf skills by combining instruction along with on-course play. Each session will be one hour long. Spring is in the air! Your Golf Course Maintenance team has been extremely busy these past several months getting ready for this time of year. If you haven’t read the recent first edition of the 2021 QuarterlyINSIGHT, please take a look as it is filled with all of the behind-the-scenes happenings over the first quarter of the year. If you’d prefer a hard copy, do not hesitate to reach out and I’ll be sure to get you a copy.

JEFF STEEN, CGCS DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com

The big plan for April is greens aeration and continuing to prep for the busy golf season ahead! Grant Suderman, Golf Course Superintendent, prepared the information below relating to the practice of the aeration process. Many of you have seen this before, but it’s a good reminder of why aeration is so vital. You may be interested in seeing the photos on the next page, taken after a recent lightning strike on the course. Thanks to Grant, once again, for providing this report. It should be an exciting season at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd. I know that the GCM team is looking forward to getting the course to where we left off the golf season of 2020 … with the golf course in excellent condition and the greens as good as it gets. Let’s press the reset button and do it again! On behalf of the entire GCM team, we look forward to seeing you out on the golf course and around the community. Play well and be safe! Jeff Steen, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Spring core aerification is scheduled for Monday April 5th and Tuesday April 6th. Core aerification is a bi-annual (spring and fall) process that involves pulling plugs from greens and replacing with a sand profile. Core aerification is a necessary and highly beneficial practice promoting turfgrass health and performance. It is a short-term disruption that has longterm benefits. Aerification achieves many important objectives including:     

promoting oxygen and water through the soil profile relieving soil compaction improving soil mixture with topdressing of sand improving drainage reducing thatch accumulation

We understand aerification can be an inconvenience. We thank you for understanding that it’s a critical cultural practice for the sustainability of our greens health and playability. Page 5

A Special Report from Golf Course Superintendent Grant Suderman

On the morning of March 17th, 2021 it was discovered that the large Silver Maple behind #5 green was destroyed by a lightning strike. The debris was scattered from the ladies’ tee on hole #5 all the way across the tees on Hole #6 and into the pond at #6. Luckily this happened with no one around and everybody remained safe. At the time, the GCM team was huddled at the maintenance shop. Clean-up efforts were underway at the time of this writing and will take the entire team several hours to get the area back to a safe (and playable) condition. There are multiple damaged areas on the bentgrass green and approach. We will work diligently to replace these damaged turf areas, but you may notice slight scaring until the turf is actively growing. The weather has certainly been more of a conversation than we care to remember!
