There is nothing more frustrating than missing another green after hitting a great drive ...

Josh Nahm Director of Instruction joshn@thenationalgolfclub.com

… and there is usually one main culprit when you don't hit approach shots solid and that is your angle of attack. The angle of attack is the angle of which your club is coming into the ball in a vertical manner. Simply, are you hitting down on the ball, hitting it at the bottom of your arc or hitting up on the ball? All great ball strikers have a downward, or descending angle of attack. It's the only way to ensure solid contact every time.

ASCENDING ANGLE OF ATTACK

DESCENDING ANGLE OF ATTACK

If you are someone who tends to hit their irons fat or thin a lot, I can almost guarantee that your angle of attack is not down enough. You may even be hitting up on the ball at impact. That makes it impossible to consistently make solid contact and compress the ball. And when we don't make consistent, solid contact, hitting greens becomes impossible.

Dear Member, As we reach the mid-point of summer, we tend to lean toward survival mode when it comes to the health of our cool-season grasses that occupy our rough areas and greens. These are typically the hottest and most humid days of the summer, so keeping the greens cool by syringing during the day and keeping the fans operating regularly is extremely important to the survival of our greens. Our team members who syringe greens are trained to always be aware of where our members are and acknowledge them, but occasionally we get caught up in the task at hand and that doesn’t happen. Please be patient if this occurs as it usually only takes a few minutes to complete the watering of a specific green and we will be out of the way. We also try to go backwards to avoid running into the same group on every green. The fans need to run for the green to receive the full benefit of precious air movement on hot days. We would prefer that you do not turn them off, but if you do, please turn them back on again before you leave the green. If it won’t come back on, please let us know as soon as possible. As always, we appreciate your cooperation and understanding. It is always our goal to deliver the best possible conditions at all times to our members. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. TJ Ridge checking greens moisture for hand-watering needs
