January 2019 Welcome 2019! The start of a new year is an exciting time for our staff as we plan events and finalize our game plan for the upcoming golf season. Although we’re looking ahead to the new year, we can’t help but look back at the spectacular holiday season we just celebrated. December was an incredibly busy time at the Club with member events, special dinners and holiday parties. We’re happy to report that attendance at holiday events reached an all-time high this year and we truly thank you for your tremendous support. Our staff captured photos of some of the festivities which you’ll find within this issue. CHRIS BREMS PRESIDENT
Our annual Member Experience Survey will be sent out this month. The survey has been redesigned and significantly shortened. The new format will provide you with the opportunity to offer more personal input and will give us qualitative information with which to improve Club services and amenities. We always value your opinions and feedback!

On behalf of the entire Golf Operations team, we extend to our members a “Happy New Year!” As the team prepares for the 2019 golf season, we are looking forward to bringing some new products and apparel lines for you to enjoy. The final golf tournament schedule has been finalized and you will soon be receiving an online version of the annual Golf Event Guide which is a great tool that details each of our golf tournaments.
SEAN HANNA DIRECTOR OF GOLF seanh@lochlloyd.com GOLF SHOP 816.322.2117 JANUARY GOLF SHOP HOURS OF OPERATION 9a to 5p Closed Tuesdays FIRST TEE TIMES Tee times will begin at 10a daily in January, weather permitting
With the winter weather now here, I would like to remind you there are two holes cut on each green. The Golf Course Maintenance team cuts two holes to help spread out traffic on the greens during the winter months. We ask that when you are playing, remove the flagstick and place it in the opposite cup when you have finished putting out. Basically, you are making the group behind you play to a different hole location. As a reminder, frost delays are a possibility during the winter, so please check for updates on ForeTees or call the Golf Shop to see if there are any delays. We are also now in the “off-season” as it relates to the GHIN handicap system. With this, you are no longer able to post local scores to the handicap system during the off-season months. The active season will pick back up starting in March of 2019 and you will once again be asked to post all scores to your handicap at that time. Should you play golf during the winter months in what is considered an “active season state,” you are asked to continue to post scores throughout the winter months. If you have any questions about this, please contact your Golf Professionals. Happy New Year and I will see you on the first tee! Sean
Club Re-Grip SPECIAL During the month of January, receive a 20% discount when you re-grip your golf clubs at the Golf Shop. We have a wide variety of grips in stock. If we don’t have the grip you prefer, we can order it for you. This is a great time of year to get your clubs back to “good-as-new” condition in preparation for next year’s golf season. Who knows, maybe you’ll even knock a stroke or two off your scores! Please contact the Golf Shop to take advantage of this offer.

Dear Members, A Question from the Course This month the question from the course is all about winter work: “What is the focus of the maintenance team during this time of year?”
JEFF STEEN DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com
The winter presents many challenges for the maintenance team, but, for the most part, we focus on detail work that is behind the scenes. This includes drainage; tree trimming; shop cleanup; firewood for the Clubhouse; leaves, leaves and more leaves; pond edges; rock walls; stairs; bridges and a long list of jobs that often go unnoticed. The crew has also done a great job keeping the walk paths and parking lot clean during snow and icy conditions. As we move forward into 2019, we will start to build our team of associates with the goal of being fully staffed by March. We will introduce a new member of the GCM team on a more personal level each month with a little question-and-answer segment. Many of you may have already met our new Assistant Superintendent, Justin Painter who joined the team in June 2018. Justin is our first associate to be in the “spotlight.” Please get to know Justin by reading his Q&A session below. As we progress into the year, you will see some new faces along with many familiar smiles. Please stop and say hello or pass along a wave. It means a lot to the team. Happy New Year from the entire Golf Course Maintenance team! We look forward to seeing everyone around the golf course and throughout the community. Jeff Steen, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
with Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, Justin Painter Q: Who is your mentor(s)? A: Brad Wunderlich at Edgewood Tahoe; he formed me into the Assistant I am today. I am also excited to work with Jeff Steen and mentor under him in the coming years. Q: Best advice you’ve been given? A: Be honest with everyone in your life including yourself and do things right the first time. Q: How did you get into golf maintenance? A: Originally, I played golf in high school and wanted to pursue the PGA teaching and pro shop side of our industry. I quickly realized my skills (and lack of golf talent) were much better suited for the golf maintenance side. I spent a summer on the maintenance crew of my hometown course and the rest is history. Q: What is your dream vacation? A: Somewhere I could ski and relax on a beach in the same week. Q: What is playing on your radio right now? A: Red Dirt/Texas Country Q: What do you do away from work? A: Spend time with my better half, fiancé, Elizabeth. W e enjoy rooting on our respective sports teams and going on last-minute adventures. Q: What is your favorite thing about your job? A: I enjoy the variability to it and solving the ever-changing challenges that golf course maintenance presents. Q: Where is your favorite local hot spot to eat? A: I like Joe’s KC BBQ. Q: What is something else we don’t know about you? A: In my younger years, I used to raise show cattle. Page 3

Thai Yoga Massage with Becky Stevens “Thai Massage” is actually western slang for Thai Yoga. Thai Yoga differs from massage therapy in that it is a traditional healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles and assisted yoga postures. Sessions may be done on a massage table or on a yoga mat. Clients wear stretchy workout clothing and remain fully clothed during the session. Sessions include muscle compression to warm up the body and loosen the joints, followed by an assisted yoga stretch for 60 minutes. Thai Yoga is never painful and only uses gentle techniques working with your own body’s abilities and limitations.
THE FITNESS CENTER HOURS OF OPERATION: Open daily 5a to 10p with Key Fob access
Benefits of Thai Yoga Reduction of back pain Relief of joint stiffness and muscle pain Increased flexibility and range of motion Boosted energy Decreased anxiety Improved immune function Thai Yoga Practitioner, Becky Stevens, initially received her Thai training in Kansas City at KC Fitness Link. Several years later, she traveled to Thailand and received additional training with several expert instructors. Becky offers 60-minute sessions at $70 each on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays at The Fitness Center. To schedule an appointment or for more information, please contact Becky at 816.405.1878 or beckys@lochlloyd.com.
Massage warms the body and the soul!
Yo-Golf Conditioning Class If you have a desire to pursue fitness that will improve your golfing body and mind, Yo-Golf Conditioning is worth checking out. Joni Van Horn started offering Yoga for Golfers three years ago and recently more members have joined the “Tribe,” which has made it possible to add a third class to the weekly schedule. Sessions focus on the most important “club” in your bag … your own body and mind, and include all aspects of health and golf: 30 minutes of Total Golf Conditioning (dynamic stretching, balance, strength, cardio, core) and 30 minutes of Core Yoga (stretching, balance, core, mindfulness). Short on time? No problem! Choose one 30-minute format and still get results. Sessions are available most Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30p and Saturdays at 9:15a.
Testimonial about Yo-Golf Conditioning: “When I first started doing Yoga for Golfers, I was struggling with my knees. It was
difficult to walk down stairs without holding the grab rail. Joni was patient with me as I was not very flexible and didn’t have good balance. I have been doing Yoga for Golfers for two years now and I can easily trot down the stairs, hands-free, and my balance is greatly improved.” Jim Turner, Golf Enthusiast
To sign up for Yo-Golf Conditioning, contact Joni Van Horn at joniv@lochlloyd.com or 913.226.4688. Fee for Elite Members: 20 sessions for $200 or 10 sessions for $150. Drop-in members pay $20 per class.
