June 2020 at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd

Dear Members, Despite enduring a pandemic and federal and local stay-at-home orders, Mother Nature sure has been generous to our region. The golf course is as green as I can remember seeing it, the sun is out on more days than not, and rain seems to be distributed at the right times (minus the one 5.5-inch torrential event). The Golf Course Maintenance team has taken their commitment and expertise to newfound levels for our golf course this year and the results are staggeringly good. With weather heating up in June, our fairways will be super-charged, right on time. The Pool and Snack Bar will also be super-charged and ready for use on Monday, June 8th. Please keep your eye out for an email which will outline the procedures and protocols in place to keep these facilities as safe as possible for members and staff alike. While we all have the incredible fortune of enjoying the Club and its amenities, we cannot ignore the uncertainty that remains surrounding the future. Events will stay on our calendar as scheduled; however, we encourage you to see these as “earmarked” dates for events that may or may not take place. Should an event not be able to take place, we will let you know as soon as possible. Although I have said this many times during the past few months, I am compelled to repeat myself by saying THANK YOU. Thank you for your support, patience and understanding during this unprecedented time. I am extremely proud of the way this community has come together to support one another. I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

THE SECHREST NINE While much of the region is seeking to get their businesses open and stoke the economy, we inside the gates at Loch Lloyd have the advantage of operating under our own and different timelines. A very large number of our community remains reluctant and cautious about the actions and decisions that they make on a daily basis, relative to engaging in public venues. We want to make sure that we continue to serve as the epicenter for the community during the pandemic. We will be keeping The Sechrest Nine closed for golf and would like to encourage its utilization as a recreational, natural and safe environment for community use. Dear Members, As we enter the month of June, the sports landscape as we know it has certainly been disrupted. No NBA playoffs, no NHL playoffs, no MLB, no MLS, the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour playing golf with no fans … yet golf at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd continues to flourish. Thank you to all who have been able to play golf and support the Golf Shop, however and whenever you can. All of our Junior Golf programs for this summer have been postponed. We will look to the month of July as a target to start up these programs again. Look for future communication regarding our Junior Golf programs. SEAN HANNA DIRECTOR OF GOLF seanh@lochlloyd.com

The Whummle has been rescheduled for July 22nd through July 25th. Those members who have already signed up to participate in The Whummle are considered entered in the event. We have a waitlist for those who wish to add their names to the players’ list. If you are unable to play on the newly scheduled dates, please let the Golf Shop know immediately so that players may be transitioned from the waitlist. Since our annual “Demo Day” was cancelled this year, we will be hosting several club fitting days this month. These fitting days will be by appointment only. We hope you can come out to try some of the “hottest” new equipment offered by Callaway (on June 10th) and TaylorMade (on June 13th).

HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB We are excited to announce a fun, updated program for golfers ... the Hole-in-One Club. When you enroll in the Hole-in-One Club, a $10 fee is charged to your account anytime a member in the Hole-in-One Club aces a hole. If YOU are the skilled (and perhaps lucky) individual to ace the hole, your member account will be credited the full amount from all Hole-in-One Club members. Of course, the MORE members we get to join this club ... the MORE $$$ you win ... so be sure to sign up and get your friends to do so as well! Half of the winnings will be applied as a credit in your Golf Shop credit book; the other half may be used on the day of your hole-in-one to help ease the burden of the time-honored tradition of buying everyone a celebratory drink. Any leftover winnings not used for drinks will be applied to your Golf Shop credit book. Signing up for this program is as simple as making a call to the Golf Professionals at the Golf Shop: 816.322.2117. Let the games begin!

Dear Member, It’s hard to believe it’s already June and we’re well into a new golfing season despite the “new normal” practices currently in place. With that said, it’s great to see the golfing membership out enjoying the course. I am proud of the maintenance team for all of their hard work these past several months and the continued positive course conditions. We appreciate your patience as the Golf Course Maintenance team has been faced with unique and complex challenges this year, operating under pandemic-driven restrictions.

JEFF STEEN, CGCS DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com

Page 8

This year we will have less color throughout the course, specifically on #18 and around the Clubhouse, as it’s been decided to hold off on planting summer annuals. We’ve been able to make a few landscape improvements near the first tee as you can see from the pictures below.

As a golfer, I’m always puzzled about why there seem to be so many ballmarks on our putting surfaces. As a golf course superintendent, agronomist, manager and concerned associate, I’m equally puzzled as to why most of these ballmarks are not repaired at the time of occurrence. Since we have had no outside events, guests or associates playing over the past several months, we can’t blame the lack of ballmark repairs on anyone other than our members. I’ve been hit by golf balls more than I care to admit over my 30-year career … it hurts! Just imagine how the turf plant, mowed at 1/10th of an inch, feels being smacked by a golf ball! Not very good I’m sure. As you will see from the diagram below, repairing a ballmark is a simple and quick repair that has a dramatic, positive and long-lasting effect on the putting green. Please take a moment to repair your ballmark as well as one or two others on every green. You’ll be amazed how much of a difference you are making to help enhance the quality of the putting surface each and every day! If you are unsure on the proper technique to repair a divot caused by the dramatic impact of the turf plant being hit by a golf ball, please reach out and I’ll be happy to meet and discuss.

Some golf members have asked about the fairways and why they are not in as good of shape as the driving range tees. The list of reasons is long and includes cart traffic, drainage infrastructure, no play vs. regular play, full exposure to sun vs. shade and more. Overall, our team is excited about the conditions of the golf course and the fairways. Despite the need for warm nighttime temperatures to really help with the soil temps and push the zoysia along, we are approaching the time of year when the grass will really start to respond positively to our maintenance programs. We will also be sodding some of the thin areas still left over from 2019 winter kill. The light is at the end of the tunnel and we’re slowly moving in the right direction. Keep an eye out near the end of June for the second edition of my Quarterly INSIGHT report which will highlight the latest behind-the-scenes looks within the Golf Course Maintenance team, along with golf course happenings and ongoing projects. Our team continues to work hard to exceed your expectations and produce the best conditioned golf course in the area. Please contact me directly if I can answer any questions and/or concerns. Sincerely, Jeff Steen, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance jeffs@lochlloyd.com Page 9

Dear Member, It is with immense sadness that I announce the retirement of Becky Stevens, Yoga Instructor at the Fitness Center. Becky has been at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd since the Fitness Center opened more than 14 years ago. She has contributed her practice to the community and has helped many members become more “Zen” … with peace and balance in their lives. Please feel free to reach out to Becky at fiddlinbecky@gmail.com to wish her good luck with her future endeavors. Once the COVID-19 restrictions allow, we will host a farewell reception at the Fitness Center to give Becky a proper send-off and to say our goodbyes in person.

As we begin this new month and head into the throes of summer, your Food & Beverage team continues to work diligently and safely to provide you with curbside to-go service and grocery orders. YES, we miss you! YES, we are eager to get back to normal operations and YES, we value working for a company that places your safety and our safety at the top of the priority list. Dear Members, On behalf of myself, my sous chefs and all of our cooks, we want to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout these precarious times. We will continue to strive for excellence in everything we create and prepare for you, and look forward to seeing you in our dining rooms in the near future.

Jacob Cindrich Jacob Cindrich’s first position in the food and beverage industry was at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd as a server in the 19th Hole. This energetic and personable young man from Overland Park efficiently handles a variety of responsibilities at the Club. He is being trained as a bartender and is doing a fabulous at the comfort station. In the fall of 2019, Jacob graduated from Kansas State University with a major in Food Science and a minor in Leadership. Jacob will be continuing his education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine starting July 2020! Jacob’s hobbies include reading, playing golf and enjoying ultimate Frisbee with friends. He shared with us a “fun fact” … his initials (JAC) are also the first three letters of his name. We are proud to have such a hardworking, dedicated associate on the Food & Beverage team!

Have you tried our new Gelato yet? We offer delicious new flavors along with our weekly specials. To keep things fresh and fun, we are going to purposely mislabel a few Gelato containers starting June 8th. (Don’t worry … you’ll still get the flavor you order!) If your Gelato has a different label, take a picture of the lid and send it to Sarah, Club Administrator, at sarahd@lochlloyd.com. You’ll receive a quart of Rocky Road Gelato, compliments of the Chef! If you’d like to practice your pastry skills and prepare a delicious (and easy) Chocolate Mousse, here is my favorite recipe:

INGREDIENTS 5 ounces bittersweet chocolate 1 ounce unsalted butter 8 ounces heavy cream 3 egg whites 3 egg yolks 1 tablespoon sugar

DIRECTIONS Whip cream to soft peaks and refrigerate. Melt chocolate and butter over double boiler, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; cool to room temp. Whip egg whites; add sugar and continue whipping until soft peaks are formed. Stir egg yolks into the chocolate mixture. Fold 1/3 of whipped cream into chocolate mixture, followed by 1/3 of egg whites. Fold in remaining egg whites, followed by remaining whipped cream. Divide into serving dishes and refrigerate. Enjoy!
