JEFF STEEN DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com Dear Members, A Question from the Course People often stop me out on the golf course to ask a “quick question.” Here’s one I’ve been asked recently that I would like to shed some more light on for you: “What are the small pitch marks on the fairways?” Yes, a quick question, but not necessarily a short answer. Near the end of August, spiking of the fairways took place with a towbehind machine that caused these marks. The grass tore and the Zoysia more or less ripped in these areas, causing the scars that you can see in the photo below.

Holiday Gift Packages and Winter Programs Holiday Gift Packages Our holiday lesson gift packages make the perfect stocking stuffer for your favorite golf lover! With each order, you’ll receive a personalized gift certificate to present to the lucky recipient! Custom packages also available. Three 30-Minute Lessons....... $169 Five 30-Minute Lessons ........ $275 Five One-Hour Lessons ........ $465

Winter Programs November through March 15th

The reason this was done is that the Zoysia fairways, as with many other grass types, like to be vented or aerated leading into the fall months. The list of benefits of such cultural practices is long, but in short, allowing some oxygen to get to the roots is always a good thing! Our fairways can have significant top growth at times, but do not grow laterally very fast. Without the lateral movement, these pitch marks do not heal very quickly without some assistance. Best management practices of Zoysia is to be aggressive with cultural practices in the summer months when the turf is most actively growing, but many golf courses will put off this management until later in the season due to the disruption to play. However, the Zoysia grass slows down considerably so any damage does not heal quickly. No different in why divots will not heal very fast unless sand is backfilled. Therefore, in the future, venting or aeration of the fairways will follow with a light sand topdressing, if applicable. The sanding will also help maintain a healthy turf plant and firm playing conditions. Over time, if this practice is consistently maintained, it will help the Zoysia fairways with water infiltration, eliminate thatch accumulation, and again maintain smooth, firm playing conditions. I hope this sheds a little light on those small pitch marks on the fairways! On another note, the holiday season will be upon us before we know it. On behalf of the entire Golf Course Maintenance team, I’d like to wish everyone and their families all the best. We certainly have much for which to be thankful. Page 6

11a Program

11:45a Lunch

“An Old-Fashioned Christmas” The Loch Lloyd Home and Garden Club December meeting on Thursday December 6th will be a one-of-a-kind luncheon! We have wonderful plans for this meeting! You will be welcomed with a warm hot chocolate with yummy toppings to enhance the flavor! The tables will be festively decorated with berries, pine cones, lanterns and greenery. And, our Home and Garden Club member and Historian, April Fleming will be singing our favorite Christmas carols! The program committee has an awesome luncheon planned. Melissa Wuennenberg, owner of the quaint downtown Lee’s Summit shop, Very Violet, will show us how to make stunning holiday tablescapes and share unique gift wrapping tips and tricks. You’ll garner easy-torecreate ideas to make your holidays more spectacular. To top it all off, Loch Lloyd’s food and beverage team will be preparing a fabulous traditional Holiday Luncheon featuring Sliced Turkey, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Seasonal Vegetables, Sweet Potatoes, Homemade Rolls and a very special dessert you won’t want to miss. Invite a friend! Bring a member who hasn’t joined us for a while so that we may end 2018 with fun, friends and an awesome program! The cost for the luncheon is $22 inclusive. For reservations, please contact Nancy Myers at nancyc1029@yahoo.com. Home & Garden Club members are encouraged to attend and bring a guest! Not a member of the Home & Garden Club but interested in joining? The annual fee is only $30 … the rewards, priceless! To sign up, contact one of our Membership Committee Co-Chairs: Julie Bowers at 920.829.0085/juliecegelski@yahoo.com or Shawn Turner at 816.550.0134/cranbrookefarm@hotmail.com Page 16

Thanks to all the lovely witches who turned out for our annual “Witches Who Wine (and Brew)” event on October 25th. The ladies had a wickedly great time and their costumes were simply bewitching!

Our “so long to summer” Loch Lloyd Lake Party at the Marina on September 29th was a great success! The weather was crisp and perfect … the karaoke was a hit … and everyone had a fun time with fellow members and residents!
