A Note

FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT

May has always been my favorite month at Loch Lloyd. The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming, the course is looking great and the club is literally coming alive with events. Winter is finally behind us. May will be another busy month with lots of activities around the club. We'll kick off the month with our Mother's Day Brunch, followed quickly by The Scotty. Details on our Mother's Day Brunch went out last week and can also be found on page 9 of the newsletter. Chef has some really special things planned you won't want to miss it! I would be remiss if I didn't use this opportunity to share my excitement about Kim Palmer joining our Loch Lloyd team. As you may have read in Brian Illig's note to the membership two weeks ago, Kim is the perfect person to help propel the club's mission and values as we reinvent ourselves for the future. Kim comes to us after a nineyear career leading the partnership and branding efforts of the American Royal and managing some of Kansas City's most premier events including the city's most successful rodeo, dozens of equine and livestock shows and the world's largest BBQ contest.

Kim is spending her first few weeks developing strategies for the remainder of 2022 while getting to personally know our members. Please be sure to say Hello next time you are at the club. There is a real spirit of optimism at Loch Lloyd with the addition of new staff members, value-added initiatives, and the team's commitment to an improved standard of excellence. I invite you to stop in, grab a drink or snack at the 19th Hole, take in the view and enjoy your Loch Lloyd. It's going to be a great season!

FOOD & BEVERAGE Mark Church, Food & Beverage Director

“The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.” - Edwin Way Teale When spring comes, even the false spring, there are no problems except where to be happiest (to paraphrase Mr. Hemingway). For the Food & Beverage Team, we have our hands full in preparation to execute excellence in our dining areas. We are gearing up for Golf Tournaments, Member Events, a new Fireside menu, a new Events menu AND we have fresh faces all across the Club. It’s a great season for change and growth! We are excited to welcome the Home and Garden Club on Thursday, May 5th, and Chef Nic is preparing a Cinco de Mayo fiesta to accompany the conversation and companionship. June details will be available soon.

We cherish the opportunity to create a memorable day for all of our Mothers in the Loch Lloyd community on Sunday, May 8th. We will be serving an exquisite Mother’s Day Brunch, including a special gift for Mom from Loch Lloyd. Similar to Easter, we are offering seating between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, with regular Food & Beverage service suspended for the day. Reservations are required. Join us May 11th for another intimate and memorable wine dinner, featuring the wines of DAOU Winery from California’s Central Coast, and a sneak peak of Chef’s new Spring/Summer menu. Menu and event pricing will be shared soon, so be on the lookout! I’m writing this overlooking the 18th during a perfect sunset. Come and enjoy the spring with us!

OPERATIONS Sean Hanna, Director of Golf

We are seeing traffic pick up on the course, Golf Shop and all around the Club House as May is the month that officially TEES OFF the golfing season here at Loch Lloyd. Members are starting to play on a more regular basis and it's nice to see everyone enjoying the course. There are numerous tournaments on the calendar and we are working to ensure an exceptional experience for each of them. Two of our season long events begin this month. Fourball Match Play and Individual Match Play are both open to the ladies and the gentlemen. In addition, the Scotty is confirmed and is guaranteed to be a wonderful event for all participants. As the golf course continues to get busier, please make sure to pay mind to the daily cart rules. These rules are emailed every AM to all golfers on the Tee Sheet. In addition, they can be viewed on the television located outside the Golf Shop and are also listed on the pin location sheet. Cart rules are important and aid us in keeping our playing conditions at a premium. In closing, a personal thank you to everyone that participated in our spring fitting days. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. See you on the 1st tee,

Fairway Tarp Project Update

spring Aerification

Grant Suderman

As mentioned in the April newsletter we have implemented multiple cultural practices to select areas in fairways #3, 6, 7, 14 & 16 to promote turf recovery. These areas were aerified, topdressed, fertilized and covered with tarps during cold temperature periods leading into the zoysigrass growing season. These areas have been a challenge the past three years and the management of these areas will be a focus moving forward. The goal of this practice was to promote additional early season turf recovery. The tarps have now been removed permanently from the course as the zoysiagrass has started to come out of dormancy. The tarps will be temporary installed on select range tee areas to promote additional growth prior to use. Pictured below shows the dramatic difference of green-up from the tarped areas compared to the surrounding zoysiagrass turf. We observed green-up three weeks prior than any uncovered zoysiagrasss areas. This is due to the warming of the soil temperatures underneath the tarp. The soil temperatures underneath the tarps were anywhere from five to ten degrees warmer than the surrounding areas. This practice ultimately provided the weak areas with extended time to recover for the golf season. Moving forward we will continue to aerify, topdress and fertilize weak and sodded areas. A soil penetrant program has also been introduced to aid water movement through the soil to promote dry conditions.

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Hello members! We are excited to see golfers return to the course during our recent nice weather. At the beginning of May we were welcomed to four inches of rain. This rainfall and projected warmer temperatures will promote abundant growth of all turf and plants throughout the course over the next few weeks. Listed in this newsletter are updates on recent course projects.

#3 Aerial Showcasing Tarped Area Recovery

Spring aerification aerification was performed April 4th- 5th. We used ½ inch hollow coring tines. This differed from recent spring aerification practices using ¼ inch tines. The larger tines remove more greens profile and is then replaced with sand. This more aggressive approach will encourage maximum water and air movement through the soil profile creating healthier, firmer and more consistent playing conditions throughout the summer months. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
