Dear Member, It gives me great pleasure to leave winter behind and to welcome warmer weather, blooms on the flowers and … of course, green greens. It looks like things are starting to return to “normal” around the Club and within the community. It’s a welcome relief to resume some of the events and activities we’ve missed so much this past year. The “official” kick-off to golf season has always been the Masters Tournament. The National has its own version of the Masters on Saturday, April 10th with a 9a Shotgun. I’ll be out on the course and hope to see many of you out there as well. Please help us welcome two new team members … Michael Roskosh is our new Controller and Rachel Benevides is the new Club and Events Coordinator. Both Michael and Rachel are highlighted on page 16 of this issue. We hope to see you at the Club soon!

Nic Ingram Director of Golf nicholasi@thenationalgolfclub.com Dear Member, We can officially say spring has arrived! With warmer temperatures on the horizon, my favorite sporting event of year will soon be upon us. The Masters is only a few short weeks away and I am sure I won’t be the only golfer glued to the TV to watch the action in Augusta. Masters weekend will also bring our first event of the year on Saturday, April 10th when we’ll host our Masters Shotgun. Be sure to come out and brush the dust off your clubs. The month of April brings a good amount of other Club events highlighted on the pages to follow. Please reach out if you have any questions. Hope to see you at the Club soon. Best, Nicholas Ingram Director of Golf

It is with great pride that The National Golf Club of Kansas City announces its selection by Central Links Golf to host The Watson Challenge in 2021. The Watson Challenge is an annual tournament featuring 48 area golfers ... the 24 best golf professionals and the 24 best amateurs in a three-day event to identify the “best golfer in Kansas City.” The National hosted the event in 2013 and is fortunate to host this year’s event. In addition to showcasing our great golf course, we consider it a tremendous honor to host one of the greatest golfers of all time, Tom Watson. We are confident that our Club, world-class facilities and member hospitality will shine during this event. The schedule for The Watson Challenge is as follows: June 2nd ..... Player and Carnoustie Sponsor Cocktail Party June 3rd ...... Round 1 June 4th ...... Round 2 and VIP Reception hosted by all sponsors levels to include Tom Watson June 5th ...... Round 3 and Awards Ceremony
*Tee times will be available to the membership starting at 12:30 PM June 3rd-5th* The Club has selected longtime members Rick Austin and Luke Austin to be tournament chairs for this event. Their focus will be driving sponsorship activity but they will also oversee all aspects of the event. If you are interested in sponsoring The Watson Challenge, please contact either Rick or Luke; their contact information may be found below. The event proceeds benefit The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, an organization near and dear to Mr. Watson’s heart. With the generous support of our members, we are extremely optimistic that this year's Watson Challenge will be a success. As you can imagine, an event of this magnitude takes the support of our residents, community and Club membership. We’ll need between 30-40 volunteers to facilitate all of the operations which is why Mike and Debbie Sobba have once again stepped up to co-chair the volunteer committee. As members since the Club opened in July 2000, Mike and Debbie have great relationships with our members and we have no doubt that they will succeed in gathering a passionate group of volunteers to showcase the Club. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mike (msobba@strunklp.com; 816.225.8793) or Debbie (Debbie@sobba.com; 816.853.7714).

Dear Member, One of the goals that I set for our team in the past year was to mitigate the spread of poa annua on our greens. If the poa is left unchecked, it will become a much bigger problem in the future. My newsletters over the past year have documented the use of a new product called PoaCure on test plots at different locations on the golf course. These locations are on the back third of #7 green, the west half of the chipping green and the north half of our nursery green. We saw great success in poa reduction in these test plots over the past season and I feel confident enough in this product to use it on all of the greens starting this month. We will make three applications, spaced two weeks apart starting at the beginning of April. Toward the end of the month of April, you will notice the poa starting to senesce or die off. It will turn from a yellowish-orange color to brown when it dies off by the end of May or early June. We have a very high percentage of poa on these greens (some I would estimate at 60%), so expect some major discoloration on the greens during this initial phase of the program. In the following months, we will push the growth of the bentgrass with fertilizer and growth products to grow into the voids left by the poa. It will take multiple applications to eradicate the majority of the poa which is why this will be a three-year program with applications taking place in the spring and fall. The final goal is to be 95% poa free. You will see less discoloration along the way as more poa is removed and the bentgrass takes over.
The advantages of eliminating the poa are many, but a smoother putting surface with no seedheads and better heat and disease resistance are the most prominent. Visually, the greens will also look better since the blotchy look of the poa will be eliminated. The option of using PoaCure to eliminate the poa is gradual (three years), but it allows us to keep the facility open and avoid closing for six months or even a year if we were to gas the greens (using Methyl Bromide) and reseed, or completely rebuild the greens. The quality of the putting surface should not be affected during this process. As always, thank you for your cooperation and support. Please contact me should you have any questions.
Regards, Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance garys@fivestarlifestyles.com
The photos below show the success we had in reducing the poa population on our test plots on the back of #7, on the west half of the chipping green and on the north half of our nursery green during this past season.

JOSH’S “REPORT CARD” Junior golf is extremely important to me. The young golfers today are the ones that will continue to grow and improve the game tomorrow, and it is so important that they learn to play the game correctly and start early. For those of you that may have started playing golf later in your adult life, imagine how much more you would enjoy the game now if you had started when you were young. Now imagine if you had not only started young, but learned proper technique before you had a chance to ingrain all the bad habits that come along from trying to learn the game by ourselves.
√ Josh was named one of the TOP 25 junior coaches in the country! √ Josh’s students have over 20 AJGA tournament victories √ Josh’s students have 100+ junior tournament victories √ Josh’s students have over 20 collegiate tournament victories √ Josh teaches the #6 junior girl and #4 junior male in the world!
Things would most likely be very different, wouldn’t they?
Check out joshnahmgolf.com to view videos to improve your swing and distance and sign up for lessons!
When we learn to do things with proper form and technique from the beginning, we learn quicker and we perform better. There are fewer obstacles to overcome, so we improve faster, and improving is what leads to enjoyment of the game.

I’ve given more than 10,000 lessons to juniors, and over 100 of my students have received golf scholarships to Division 1 and Division 2 schools. Why not give your child or grandchild the opportunity to be their best on the golf course!
