Dear Members, We have reached the half-way mark of 2020. When I look back at the first six months of this year, I find plenty of positives which keep me optimistic and hopeful despite the challenges we have all faced. Member rounds of golf, for instance, are up 110% year-to-date! There is a palpable sense of comradery and community among the players. This pandemic which aims to keep us apart has, in fact, brought our Club members closer together. Proof of this is the record-breaking attendance for The Doubler, our annual member/member event. We had 20% more participation this year than ever before! Even when the Clubhouse was closed, the Club served as a hub for our community. Members are playing golf, picking up to-go food, cooling off at the Pool and taking strolls through the neighborhood. It seems that most of us have found solace within the Club and throughout our community. We’ll kick off the second half of 2020 with our Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 3rd. I hope you’re able to join in the festivities. Have a safe and memorable 4th of July weekend! Steve Shrawder, President The National Golf Club steves@thenationalgolfclub.com

Dear Member, With our continued pursuit of a safe, healthy and complete re-opening of The National and The Deuce Golf Clubs, we turn our focus to the final step of re-opening the Clubhouses. Opening the Clubhouses come with significant risk against the lessthan-favorable trend that Missouri is currently combating. Therefore, our approach will remain tactfully stingy, always distinguished, and overly protective of our associate body, our membership and their guests. Important for all of us to remain aware of is the possibility of a local outbreak, resulting in subsequent adjustments to Clubhouse operations. We will continue to monitor this situation and stand prepared to shut down and/or reevaluate our restrictions as necessary. Beginning Friday, June 19th, The National’s Mixed Grill, Dining Room and Veranda will be open for member dining, BY RESERVATION ONLY. Reservations will be available in two-hour windows of time. Limited dining will be available in each of these venues and the Watson Library will be closed until further notice. Tables will be spaced apart to ensure safe social distancing in each of these dining venues. Members and their guests will be asked to check in at the Concierge desk no earlier than 10 minutes prior to your reservation time. Please see the hours of operation below. The Deuce Clubhouse and Grill have also re-opened for in-Club dining, effective June 24th. Please see below for information regarding hours of operation and procedures for dining at The Deuce. Thank you for your patience and your support. After such a long departure, we are eager to welcome our members back into our Clubhouses to better make use of the amenities of which we are all so proud. We appreciate your commitment to the health and safety of one another and our associates. By working together and adhering to CDC recommendations, we are optimistic that we will be able to keep the doors of the Clubs open indefinitely. Should any questions or concerns arise, please do not hesitate to contact a Club executive at 816.746.0200. Dear Members, I hope all of you are safe and well. As I write this newsletter, we are 4 inches below normal in rainfall for the past month and about six degrees above our average normal temperature for this time of year. Many of you may be wondering how this affects the golf course. Zoysiagrass is a warm-season grass so it tolerates the heat very well. Even though Zoysiagrass can get dry, it recovers very well when supplemental water is added. Our rough is a bluegrass/ fescue mix and is more susceptible under extreme heat and drought conditions. We have to be careful that it does not get too dry or it can die. The greens are a cool-season type of grass like the rough so we have to be pretty careful with the greens as well. This requires more hand watering and monitoring moisture levels with our moisture meters to make sure the greens are receiving adequate water. All of our cool-season grasses are on a preventive disease spray program since these grass types are more prone to disease during this time of the year as well. The silver lining here is that we are past the half-way point of the year and the days are getting shorter. Enjoy your summer and let me know if I can answer any of your questions. Stay safe, stay cool … and stay hydrated. Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance garys@fivestarlifestyles.com

The Worst Advice in Golf I hear it all the time on the putting green. It's been said so often that most people just take it as fact. I cringe every time I hear this piece of "advice" given and it's finally time to dispel this myth that has hurt so many golfers.
What advice am I talking about? You have to accelerate through the putt.
Just typing this is painful. This is probably the single worst piece of advice I hear regarding putting and I am sure it is the piece of advice that has hurt more golfers when it comes to putting than any other. I say this next thing at least 10 times a week when I give putting lessons:
You absolutely, positively do not want to be accelerating the putter through impact!
Now, I'm not saying you want to decelerate (even though in the hundreds of putts I've measured, only about 1% of people actually decelerate), but deceleration is no worse than acceleration.
So what do you want to do in putting?
Let me give you this scenario: let’s say I told you that you had to run your car into a wall at 25 mph; not 24 mph and not 26 mph. Would you drive toward the wall at 10 mph and then jump on the gas right before the wall, hoping to get to exactly 25 mph or would you get up to 25mph early and hit the cruise control? Obviously the second example is correct and it's the same thing we want to do when putting.
with Josh Nahm Director of Instruction joshn@thenationalgolfclub.com If I need 7 mph of speed in my putter at impact to hit the ball the correct distance on a certain putt, I surely wouldn't try to accelerate through impact hoping I get lucky and, right at the moment of impact, get to 7 mph. I would get the putter up to speed early and then "cruise" into the ball keeping a constant speed of 7 mph. That's the way all great putters do it and that's the way to improve your putting.
