June 2020 at The National Golf Club of Kansas City

Page 1

Dear Members, Despite enduring a pandemic and federal and local stay-at-home orders, Mother Nature sure has been generous to our region. The golf course is as green as I can remember seeing it, the sun is out on more days than not, and rain seems to be distributed at the right times. The Golf Course Maintenance team has taken their commitment and expertise to newfound levels for our golf course this year and the results are staggeringly good. With weather heating up in June, our fairways will be super-charged, right on time. The Pool and Snack Bar will also be super-charged and ready for use on Monday, June 8th. Please keep your eye out for an email which will outline the procedures in place to keep these facilities as safe as possible for members and staff alike. While we all have the incredible fortune of enjoying the Club and its amenities, we cannot ignore the uncertainty that remains surrounding the future. Events will stay on our calendar as scheduled; however, we encourage you to see these as “earmarked” dates for events that may or may not take place. Should an event not be able to take place, we will let you know as soon as possible. Thank you for your support, patience and understanding. I am very proud of the way this community has come together to support one another and I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon! Dear Member, After careful review, The National Golf Club of Kansas City will be relaxing some of the rules that were previously instated. Our next update will be on or before June 15th. Following are the protocols currently in place as of Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020. Thank you for the cooperation and support we have received these past few months as we traversed these uncertain times together. Dear Members, Summer has finally arrived and the course has responded well after a very cool spring. Your Golf Course Maintenance team has been very busy with routine mowing tasks as well as some small projects. You may have noticed new Zoysia sod that has been laid on several of the approaches. This was not the result of winter kill, but rather as a result of high -traffic areas. These areas receive a lot of traffic in the off-season from our greens mowers when the Zoysia cannot recover since it is dormant. We replace fescue in the enter/exit areas for the same reason. Most of these areas are pretty small and should be rooted down and unnoticeable in a few weeks.

PoaCure Update

Some of you may be following our research trials on this new product for poa control. We have three trials in progress. They are on the back third of #7 green, the west half of the chipping green and the north side of our nursery green. Each area has received four applications, spaced two weeks apart from one another. We will make two additional fall applications on the chipping green, but we will not make the fall applications on #7. We are seeing discoloration of the poa in all of the trials. The next thing we want to see is how fast it takes for the poa to totally disappear. We are hoping for a slow transition to allow the surrounding bentgrass to creep into these voids that will be left by the poa.

Why are we doing this?

Poa annua is very unpredictable. It does not tolerate heat stress and has poor tolerance to most diseases. This often means that we have to raise mowing height and minimize certain practices like rolling to reduce stress which also reduces green speed. Poa also puts on seedheads which impacts putting quality and overall consistency. Please observe these areas when you are out on the course and follow the process with us. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Enjoy the start of summer! We look forward to seeing you on the course. Best regards,

PoaCure progress on the back third of #7 green Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance garys@fivestarlifestyles.com
