March 2021 at The National Golf Club of Kansas City

Dear Member, We’re counting down to spring and are hopeful the cold weather, snow storms and ice are behind us. Despite some of the “interesting” weather we have had recently, we enjoyed seeing so many of you brave the elements and join us at the Clubhouse for dinner or drinks last month. As the weather continues to improve, we hope to see even more of you! Let’s hope the “luck of the Irish” grants us lots of beautiful weather to get out and golf this month and that our KC Royals start their season off strong. The boys in blue kick off their season with a home game on April 1st. The Club’s Tennis Professional, Carolina Mayorga-Perry, has a wide variety of adult and junior tennis clinics and workshops lined up for the spring session which starts on April 19th. Be sure to read all about it on pages 10 and 11 of this issue and sign up early as space is limited. We hope to see you soon!

Dear Member, After a long winter, a new golf season is finally upon us. I always consider March a transition month, much like November, where you have a tug-of-war among the weather seasons. We might have one day where it’s 70 degrees and the next day it’s 30. Thankfully, better weather is now in sight. March is also when we perform our first greens aerification of the season. Our aerification dates at The National are March 8th and 9th. Due to the cooler temperatures this time of the year, the healing process takes a little longer, so expect a healing time of three to four weeks. Hopefully, we’ll have some warm weather to expedite this process. Last fall, I mentioned some drainage projects that we have on our list of goals. Two areas that we would like to address this month are the front of #14 tee box and a small area at the end of the tee side fairway on #18. Drainage will make it easier to mow these areas. It will also increase playability and eliminate the need for ropes and stakes. We hope that the manhole cover location process being performed by the Platte County Sewer District is wrapped up this month as well. The process was slowed down in February due to several weeks of freezing cold temps. Speaking of freezing cold temperatures, I’m always curious how the Zoysia is going to respond as we near our green up phase in late March and early April. As I write this, our annual rainfall has been normal and snowfall has been slightly below normal for this winter. I feel better about this scenario as opposed to the very wet winter we experienced two years ago, but it’s like opening a present … we’ll see what we have when we start to green up.

Tree work on #12

Please stay safe and healthy and I look forward to seeing all of you on the course very soon! Regards, Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance garys@fivestarlifestyles.com

The National Ladies' Golf Association (LGA) will soon be starting their 2021 golf season and it looks to be another fun-filled year. The ladies' regular play days are Tuesday mornings from mid-April to mid-October. The LGA mixes up the formats, holds two Guest Day events and participates in women’s inter club play with local clubs. Weekly games vary in format and promote both fun and social aspects of the game. The LGA also promotes and supports other golfing events and activities such as participating in the Women's Golf Association of Kansas City (WGAKC), Team Play and member/guest events across the city. They also love to encourage new women golfers here at The National! The annual membership fee to join the LGA is $85 which includes the following:    

Opening Day Breakfast Prize Funds for Weekly and Season-Long Games Closing Day Lunch Annual Holiday Party

The LGA will offer a “Just-for-Fun” option again this year! This is a great choice for those who don't want competition but still want the on-course experience and social aspects of the game. With this option, you may play as many holes as you want (9 or 18), pick the ball up and drop it wherever you want, skip holes ... it's all up to you! The membership fee for the “Just for Fun” group is $45 and includes everything above except weekly/season-long prizes.

OPENING DAY IS COMING UP!

Opening Day is Tuesday, April 20, 2021. Please sign up on ForeTees by April 13th or inform the Golf Shop if you would like to attend.

THE THREE BIGGEST MYTHS IN GOLF

We’ve heard them so many times that we have to believe they’re true … but are they? By trying to implement these tips, are you hurting your golf game? We’re going to look at these “tips” that have been spread time after time on driving ranges around the world and talk about how they could be hurting your game.

Josh Nahm Director of Instruction joshn@thenationalgolfclub.com

MYTH #1 TURN IN THE BARREL

MYTH #2 I LOOKED UP

MYTH #3 I SWUNG TOO HARD

We’ve all heard this one: “You should turn back and turn through with almost no lateral motion.” But is this true? Are the best players in the world doing this?

He chunked it because he looked up. She shanked it because she looked up. He thinned it because he looked up.

If you are hitting your driver too far or your irons are flying over greens then, yes, you might be swinging too hard. I doubt that’s the case.

The simple answer is NO! Especially when it comes to irons, staying “in the barrel” will cause the bottom of the swing to be too far behind the ball. If we stay in the barrel, we will not be hitting down on the ball enough and will not be getting forward shaft lean at impact. So … what do the best players in the world do? No good player keeps their hips between those two lines from setup to impact, especially with an iron. If you’re struggling with taking a divot in front of the ball, make sure that you’re moving your center of mass forward in order to get the bottom of the swing more forward. Don’t try and stay in the barrel!

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say this! This myth damages so many golfers because it keeps their head artificially frozen in place which restricts turning and can damage their back. In the 20 years I’ve been giving lessons, I’ve never told anyone to keep their head down (nor will I ever). This player was told many times to keep his head down. Due to this advice, he restricted the movement of his body (look how much more rotated his chest is in the after pic) that led to inconsistent contact.

Swing at a natural tempo and try to push yourself to keep swinging faster. Slowing your backswing will just cause you to hit it shorter. Check out joshnahmgolf.com to view videos to improve your swing and distance and sign up for lessons!

From a mechanical point of view, letting your eyes follow the ball and not trying to keep your head down allows you to make a much better turn through the ball and leads to better contact.

Page 6

The myth that a player swung too hard so they hit a bad shot causes people to have problems with tempo in their swing. The average tour players swing in a 3:1 ratio, meaning their backswing takes three times as long as their downswing. Most amateurs, when they’re trying to swing fast, are also around 3:1. The problem comes when they try and slow down their backswing because they think they’re swinging too hard. They try and go very slow in the backswing and then wind up yanking on the club from the top in an effort to get any power.
