February 2019 at The National Golf Club

Page 1

Dear Members, Brrrrr. Yes, the course looks beautiful in its blanket of snow but I could do without these frigid temperatures! The good news is that February is our shortest month and March is right around the bend!

FEBRUARY 2019

We’ll try to heat things up at the Club this month with a flurry of activity including one of the most popular events of the year, the Father/Daughter Dance. I’ll be there with my daughter, Lucy, and I hope to see a lot of dad and daughter duos there as well.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Steve Shrawder Club President

Other events scheduled this month include our Valentine Brunch, Valentine Dinner and a unique family-style Wine Dinner featuring Anderson’s Conn Valley Winery. We’re also bringing back our Family Style Dinner on February 17th so be sure to add that to your calendar. There’s exciting news to share on the fitness side including the introduction of FREE group exercise classes. That’s right … free and unlimited. That’ll keep you warm! Plus, we’re rolling out our Inaugural Women’s Golf Pre-Season Training Program, which you can read all about on page #6.

Dear Members, January brought the winter weather we all expect here in the Midwest. To start the month, we had a few days that almost reached 60 degrees. This warm stretch was immediately followed by snow and temperatures in the teens. The good news is that winter will officially be over on March 20th! A common question the Golf Course Maintenance team receives this time of year is, “What do you do during the winter?” Below I have listed some projects and assignments we complete during the months of January and February:      

Spencer Roberts Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Sand and paint all golf course accessories Maintain tree and underbrush areas Perform annual maintenance on equipment Complete multiple maintenance facility upgrades Develop and implement training for pertinent job assignments Finalize agronomic plans for the upcoming season

Both The National and Deuce teams are also responsible for snow removal around the Clubhouses, Fitness Center and Lodge. This year we have received more snow since my arrival here at The National. The assistants and their teams have done a wonderful job cleaning these locations so that members, guests and staff may safely enter and exit these areas. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Spencer Roberts Director of Golf Course Maintenance spencerr@fivestarlifestyles.com

Jefferson’s Manhattan

The Manhattan is a classic cocktail believed to date back to the late 1800s. It’s made with a bracing mixture of Jefferson’s Bourbon, sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters.

Jefferson’s Very Small Batch Old Fashion

A Hands-On Kids Cooking Class Sunday, February 24th 1p to 2p

The bar standard … a sugar cube soaked in bitters, a shot of Jefferson’s, and an orange peel … create an impressive yet timeless cocktail.

Jefferson’s Very Small Batch Horsefeather

The Horsefeather blends Jefferson’s with ginger beer, three dashes of bitters and a little lemon juice. The result is refreshing (but not sweet) … boozy (but not overpowering). And the ginger beer provides an entertaining bit of spice! $8 each

Anderson’s Conn Valley Vineyards has been family owned and operated since 1983 and is dedicated to producing world-class wines at affordable prices. Conn Valley Vineyards is lucky enough to sit in the lap of Napa Valley, which affords their talented winemakers access to some of the finest grapes in the world. With this year’s vintage offering exceptional balance and complexity due to extended maturation on the vine, Anderson’s Conn Valley Vineyards has produced some truly spectacular wines Bob Campbell, Advanced Sommelier and ACVV’s National Sales Manager, will be our special guest this evening. Bob was born in Scotland and, at the age of seven, his family immigrated to the United States in the Detroit area. Bob accumulated 14 years of experience in restaurants and hotels which would be the foundation of his career of 30 years and his passion … wine. After passing the Advanced Sommelier examination from the Court of Master Sommeliers, Bob joined the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1994. He helped establish two import companies and spent four years in sales and marketing management before founding his own business in 2010. Campbell Selections represents four small family estates that own their own vineyards, have history with their vineyards, and believe in growing wines (or wines that have a reason to exist). In 2015 Bob started a national sales company with longtime friend and business associate, Kevin McGill. Campbell and McGill Selections produce their own wines and represent the Starlight Distillery nationally.
