JANUARY
2019
Dear Members, I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season and were able to spend time with friends and family. December was incredibly busy at the Club with lots of member events and parties. We were fortunate to see Santa several times throughout the month, too. There’s nothing quite like watching a child look up at the big guy in red with awe and amazement. It keeps us all young at heart! Steve Shrawder Club President
Attendance at our holiday events reached an all-time high this year. Thank you for coming out to the Club to celebrate the holidays with us. Our staff captured wonderful photos of some of these magical events which you’ll find inside this newsletter. This month you’ll receive our annual Member Experience Survey, which has been redesigned and shortened. The new format will provide you the opportunity to offer more personal input and will give us qualitative information with which to improve services and amenities. We always value your opinions and feedback!

GOLF NEWS Dear Members, Happy New Year! Your Professional Golf Staff has been diligently working on our event schedule for 2019. Please be on the lookout for the Golf Event Guide this month with all the pertinent information. I would like to welcome Andy Rumbaugh who is transitioning from The Deuce to one of The National’s Assistant Golf Professionals. Andy is looking forward to meeting and serving all of you. Saying farewell to a colleague is never easy ... especially one as talented, skilled and easy-going as Zac Gavlak. Zac, The National’s PGA Director of Instruction, will be leaving the Club in January to relocate his wife and young children back home to South Dakota to be closer to family. We have truly enjoyed having Zac on our team and he will be missed. Zac has represented the FiveStar Clubs with the utmost professionalism, passion and enthusiasm for teaching others. We are confident that his future is bright and we wish him nothing but the best in his new position with Brookings Country Club in Brookings, South Dakota.

Dear Members, Spencer Roberts Director of Golf Course Maintenance
Happy New Year! The Golf Course Maintenance team is excited for a great 2019. As we start the new year, the team will continue our annual tree pruning program and complete multiple small projects throughout the course. Viridity, FiveStar’s internal golf course construction company, will also be onsite to start a project on the #1 tee complex. We will be adding three new tee surfaces to the left of the current Black, Purple and Gold tees. The construction of the new tees should be completed by the first of April. I will be sending out a communication piece that details more about this project once the work begins. Thank you for your continued support! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Spencer Roberts Director of Golf Course Maintenance spencerr@fivestarlifestyles.com

3rd Annual Off-Season Golf Program at The National Golf Club
Our Off-Season Golf Program is rooted in the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) philosophy that improving the physical capability of the golfer is the key to unlocking the golfer’s potential. The greatest investment a golfer can make in improving how they play is in their own body.
The core philosophy of our Off-Season Golf Program is in the team approach between the fitness instructor, golf instructor and golfer. The past two years of the program have been a great collaboration between our golf and fitness teams. Outgoing Director of Instruction, Zac Gavlak, has been extremely instrumental in making the program a success and while we are sad to see him go, we wish him all the best in his new opportunity in South Dakota. As we continue the nationwide search for Zac’s replacement, his vacancy requires some minor adjustments to our Off-Season Golf Program. Participation in the CHAMPION PACKAGE may start any time between January 1st and March 1st. Those starting the program early in the year may work with PGA Head Golf Professionals Kyle Golos or David Shanks OR choose to do the fitness sessions right away and wait to work on golf improvement with our new Director of Instruction once that position is filled. Pricing on both packages has been reduced as well, as noted below.
CHAMPION PACKAGE
PROFESSIONAL PACKAGE
This 15-week program may begin any time from January 1st until March 1st. This is what a truly dedicated golfer is looking for to take their game to the next level in 2019.
This 10-week program, beginning February 1st, is designed for golfers who feel confident about their game, but are looking to improve consistency, find relief from a small but persistent injury, or just get their body ready for the 2019 golf season.
This program is designed for golfers who have serious issues with swing mechanics, past injuries that hinder your game, or are looking to make major improvements to your flexibility, mobility, control and power. Your training program takes place in three phases with each element built specifically for you. PHASE 1 (6 to 8 weeks): We’ll seek to correct the deficiencies identified by your TPI Body Screen. PHASE 2 (4 to 6 weeks): We’ll focus on developing “golf strength” which may consist of lower body, upper body, core or postural strength, depending on your individual needs. PHASE 3 (4 to 6 weeks): We’ll work on developing power by improving rotary motion and ground force production.

Winter hours for the Dining Room and Mixed Grill are effective this month through early Spring. Please see changes to the hours on page two of this newsletter. Also starting this month, we will begin enforcing a bar closing time that will be two hours after the kitchen closes. If you are dining with us before the listed closing time, please stay and enjoy your after-dinner cocktails or finish that bottle of wine. However, if there are no diners in the Club at the time the kitchen closes, we will not be keeping The Mixed Grill open. We thank you for your support of these changes and welcome your questions and feedback at any time. Stay warm! John Geiger Executive Director of Food & Beverage johng@fivestarlifestyles.com

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: JILL LEIKER
Jill Leiker is the Corporate & Community Wellness Manager for the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District. Jill began the study of martial arts in 1982, attained her black belt in 1986 and currently holds the rank of 9th degree Black Belt. Her interest in martial arts was sparked when she attended a community self-defense class. Jill encourages the study of self-protection through class instruction and seminar training and works to empower women with new skills and life-saving knowledge. She believes simple but effective selfprotection techniques can be taught to anyone. Jill was recognized by the Kansas City Sports Commission in 2018 with the WIN for KC’s Outstanding Woman award for her positive impact on girls and women. She, along with her husband Bob, wrote the curriculum for T.A.K.E. Defense which Jill has used to personally instruct more than 67,000 girls and women.
T.A.K.E. (The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation) was established in 2005 in honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood woman who was murdered. The Kemp family created T.A.K.E Defense in partnership with Johnson County Park and Recreation District and in cooperation with Blue Valley Recreation Commission and Leawood Park and Recreation. The program’s goal is to carry on Ali’s legacy and ensure that what happened to her doesn’t happen to another. Over 68,000 girls and women ages 12+ have been trained with this hands-on self-defense training program. T.A.K.E. Defense carries its message and training across the United States each year to colleges and universities and has been featured on America’s Most Wanted, the Discovery Channel, ABC’s “20/20” and the CBS Evening News, along with numerous local and regional newscasts. “Our goal is clear,” as said by Mr. Kemp. “If we can save one life out there, I don’t care what it costs; this whole program will be worth it.” For more information, please visit The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation website at www.takedefense.org.
