Hi, I’m Maria! I’ve created this booklet, with the help of Fixers, to give
young children a better understanding of what their ‘Private Parts’ are. I was the victim of abuse, but children who are
abused are not always aware of it. They are often told “it’s
a secret”, or they’re “special” and forced not to tell anyone. This book is designed to make children aware that they have the right to say “NO”, and that if anything happens that makes
them upset, they should talk to someone they trust. I’m now a mother myself, and I feel young children should learn this
as soon as they can understand what is acceptable, to help protect them. Maria x
How to use this book The information in this book follows the NSPCC’s ‘Underwear Rule’,
a simple guide to help children stay safe from abuse. You can use bright colours to identify the ‘Private Parts’ on the body - bear in mind this may differ with age.
The idea of talking to your children about their private parts can seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be.
Your ‘Private Parts’ are the bits of your body that belong to YOU, and you only. The best way to remember which parts these are, is to think of what is covered by your underwear. No one should ask to see or touch these body parts - a parent, doctor, or nurse may have to but they should always explain WHY, and ask if it is OK. You can say NO. If anything makes you upset then you don’t have to do it. Your body belongs to YOU. Most importantly, if someone does ask to look at or touch your private parts, and it makes you feel upset, you must tell an adult that you trust. Even if someone tells you to keep it a secret, you won’t get in trouble for talking about something that makes you upset. For more information, visit www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear

All these people are there to help you if someone asks you do something that makes you feel upset. Colour them in!
You should always tell your parents if someone makes you do something you don’t want to.
The people on this page are always good to talk to, but make sure it is an adult that you trust.
Remember!
Your Private Parts belong to YOU, and you ONLY.
