T

his year is speeding along. I can’t believe we’re well into summer already; it seems like not very long ago, I was poring over custom homes in the Mid-South for our January/February edition. Here we are seven months later, and it’s time to look at another wonderful approach to creating the perfect home for you and your family: renovation. Sometimes the best plan is to build a house from the ground up, but sometimes, an existing home can offer so much - whether it’s the great location or the history - and it’s a great decision to update. As I’ve met with families who have gone through this process for our renovation edition, their projects seem to have something in common. In previous decades, builders must have owned stock in doors, because there are often so many doors in older homes! The overwhelming trend now

is to remove walls and unnecessary doors and “de-compartmentalize” living spaces. It’s amazing to see how much a few adjustments in a floor plan can do to open up a space; see pg. 24 for a comparison of old and new floor plans. We had an incredible response to our 2013 Green Thumb Garden Contest; the FIX mailbox and email inbox were both brimming with entries until just a few days ago. Due to the late spring, we extended the deadline to June 14, and will therefore wait to announce our winner in the September/October issue in order to give our judges time to look more closely at our six finalists (announced on page 50). Between these unbelievable before-andafter home transformations and alluring gardens, maybe you’ll be inspired to start your own home project! If you do, share it with us at edtior@memphisfixmagazine. com.

ayne Edge has always loved the outdoors. “My dad was in an office all day long, and when he got home he couldn’t wait to get out to the woods,” says Wayne. “He got us out camping, and my mom was all about crafting and getting us to do things with our hands—fingerpainting, making sculptures out of gumballs and toothpicks, whatever we had around.” These early experiences inspired a career immersed in the organic beauty of nature; today, Edge uses sticks, mussel shells, sea glass and stones in his unique pieces, lashed together with knot techniques he learned as a Boy Scout. “We were always out hiking and backpacking, and those were big influences,” he shares. With degrees in sculpture and photography, Edge is especially drawn to the Western landscapes of Ansel Adams and Brett Weston. “I had a good time going out West and seeing where they took all those pictures, getting out there to see what they did, and when you’re there you can’t help but be inspired by what influenced them. It’s just monumental—the Grand Canyon, the Tetons, Yellowstone. When you stand in front of them, you’re just in awe.” There’s an almost loving note in his voice as he describes the process of bringing these stirring views to life: “When you’re driving down the highway, taking pictures or just quickly sketching the line of the horizon at different points—if you’re just scribbling this stuff, it starts to look like writing, and then it develops into this sculptural stick construction.” Not all of Edge’s inspirations are so abstract; these days, his ideas come from hikes around local landmarks like Pickwick Lake. “What it comes down to is spending time at the lake or hiking, and picking up rocks or shells,” he says. Science has been a lifelong passion for Edge, but as he laughingly admits, “My math isn’t the best, so I was never going to be a scientist.” Instead, he includes elements of the phenomena that so fascinate him in his sculpture. “I love science, I love to visualize all these things—photons, atoms, the moon and the stars.” When the Mars Rover made contact last year, Edge was moved to create three 16

pieces, using tubes from old TV sets and stereo equipment. “Those old TV tubes always looked like Flash Gordon spaceships to me,” he says with a chuckle. “I’m always amazed at what man is going to come up with. It’s been such an interesting age with the development of computers—it changes the whole pattern of communication. You know, before, you had to go out and make a sculpture, and now you can just take a picture with your phone.” While most of Edge’s sculptures are abstract, he’s also done representations of some of Memphis’s most beloved restaurants. “I did Automatic Slim’s, Mollie Fontaine’s, the Beauty Shop. That was fun,” he says. But ultimately he continues to be drawn to scientific and natural ideas and materials. “Cabinetmakers and other craftsmen send me sticks and remnants, and I love that, using the most useless part of the tree, the stuff that would be sent to a chipper and ground up for particle board. The least among us—these little sticks—end up in the most honored place, on the wall of a gallery or above someone’s couch.”

hen Palmer and Kathy Albertine decided to move into Palmer's parents' East Memphis home, they knew they had to make it their own. With four children and one grandchild, the couple had several ideas for ways to transform

the house into an updated, spacious family gathering space. "We knew that we wanted a large hearth room, a

screened porch, and a pool," recalls Kathy. She and Palmer, a homebuilder who first built the house for his parents in 1989, went to architect Brad Shapiro with their concerns about how they could adapt the space to fit their needs. "We were getting a little discouraged," Palmer explains. "Brad came in and saved the day by showing us what we could do with the existing floor plans."

"We like to have parties, and meetings, and to be able to volunteer our home for gatherings, so we wanted a large space." With two separate seating areas, the Albertines have plenty. Built-in bookshelves and cabinets flank the wall-mounted television, and two chairs, a sofa, and a loveseat define one area, with also boasts French doors that open to the pool deck. The home's original fireplace remains, and serves as the focal point of the second seating area. Aside from the kitchen and dining room, which remain essentially unchanged, the fireplace area was where the home ended.

Enclosing the courtyard creates a large, open family gathering room with French doors that open to the backyard pool deck. Adjacent to the hearth room, a narrow outdoor space is incorporated to add an office, pantry, and storage. An addition allows for an exercise/office room and a large master bedroom; the second floor now has a third bedroom and an additional bathroom.

"There used to be the living room right past the foyer, and then an exterior wall," Kathy says. "Beyond that, to the side, there was a family room with just a fireplace and two windows." Now, the former living room serves as a parlor-like vestibule that houses the staircase. "There was really no privacy between the master bedroom and guest bedroom, so we split them up by putting the bathroom in the middle," shares Shapiro. A short hallway, featuring a sculpture by local artist Wayne Edge (see page 16), is an attractive way to create a barrier between the two bedrooms. The Albertines extended the side of the house to create more room for the master bath, the office, and a larger bedroom, which has substantial 24

You’ve trusted us with your carpeting for years.....

Let us be your Area Rug Specialist!

If something happened to you today would your family be secure financially for the rest of their lives? At Chartwell Financial Group, we have developed a unique ability which enables our advisors to consistently guide our clients through a process of systematic wealth building and acquiring financial security. We call this process Realized Wealth. We plan for the expected and unexpected events in a person’s life. Financial disorganization is what most people encounter. Our first step is to get you Financially Organized. We use a tool called the Living Balance Sheet. From this tool, we can aggregate and organize the client’s financial world and take them through our long term planning process.

STANLEY STEEMER SERVICES Fine Area Rug Cleaning

S

tanley Steemer has cleaned area rugs in customers’ homes for years. In our constant search for better ways to service our customers, we now utilize a “submersion” cleaning process. This is the same process that the makers of area rugs in Persia and throughout Asia use to flush the rugs of dirt and excess dyes before shipping them to market. The process involves complete submersion of your area rug and gentle cleaning which flushes the fibers. This process is manually intensive and time consuming, but it allows us to remove the most dirt and contaminants from the rug. When it comes to area rugs, don’t settle for anything less than a professional rug cleaning. Why?

• Because we can give you a more thorough cleaning process that can remove the dirt that lodges inside the foundation yarns of an area rug. • It’s also the best process to remove the odor caused by pet ‘accidents’ and other contaminants • We have a safer cleaning process that involves thorough testing of the chemicals we use overnight to guard against the colors bleeding in your rug. • With our process, we have a much faster drying time that helps protect against browning and we will hand groom and clean the fringe to bring back the original beauty of your rug. Call us today to arrange pick-up of your area rugs!

If something happened to you today would your family be secure financially for the rest of their lives? We don’t know when our time is up, the last thing we want to do is leave our family with a stack of bills, mortgage, etc. Realizing your human life value before that day comes we can put the pieces in place so in case it’s sooner than later your family financially can lead a stronger financial life and ensure thru wills and trust your legacy will be followed as you want it to be. What is the biggest financial issue causing you stress today? Whether it’s not enough income, debit, tax issues, losing money in the market, etc., everyone has a different financial picture. It’s our job to ease the stress you are experiencing by eliminating risk factors and by working together getting you organized and move forward getting you to the stress free path.

How do you view Retirement? Will you have enough money is the first thought. We will go through all the options and maximize your wealth so you can take those trips, spend countless time with the family, leave a financial legacy behind, etc. With the economy staying at this rate who knows if we will have social security or with the healthcare changing what retirement health insurance and expenses will cost. That’s why we plan for the unexpected to be ready to live how you want in the later years of your life. I want my kids to go to college! How can I save to make that happen? College tuition is more expensive every single year. What will it cost in 18 years? I hate to think. Unfortunately not everyone goes to college. There are many ways to save money for college and it not break your cash flow. As a Father, it is very important to me that my client’s children are top priority in every way. I have a passion for helping people, families, and businesses, get on the path for financial freedom. How can I help you?

casual, cozy and perfect for our lifestyle.”

For the front sitting room, the homeowners and designer Gail Woods made bold choices that paid off. Rich leather furniture and bright crimson walls along with rustic accessories create a masculine feel to the comfortable space, which was covered in dated grasscloth wallpaper before the remodel. "We call this the Red Room and when weather prevents us from being on our back porch, this room becomes our retreat,” Jan explains. "It is the perfect size room for the two of us to read, watch movies, or play a competitive game of gin".

“The focal point of the exterior renovation is the covered porch with a wood burning masonry fireplace. The Hickys had a whole house sound system installed as well as a flat screen TV over the fireplace, which they use all the time. Also, Harriet McGeorge designed a new courtyard and fountain with all new landscaping that turned out beautifully. Because the houses are relatively close together, all the demo and, concrete work, framing, and masonry work in the back had to be done by hand or with a wheelbarrow.” - Chip Tayloe

WARDROBE

Everyone, men and women alike, have those infamous “I have nothing to wear!” moments sometimes. Some of us aren’t quite sure what is lurking in our closets. Tackle the wardrobe beast by breaking down the project into easy steps. You’ll get more use out of the clothes you have, and get dressed more easily, if your closet and dresser are organized and neat.

Choose how you’d like to organize your wardrobe. Hang items of the same color together if you want to be able to quickly grab your favorite blue polo or your little black dress. Or, organize by type if you want to compose outfits that way; group all the skirts together, all the sweaters together, etc. If you’re really ambitious, organize by color and garment type. If you want a neater look, replace your hodge-podge of hangers with a single type - wood, plastic, or felt-covered, all in the same color.

Fresh Take on

Fruit Salad H

ere, a traditional fruit salad recipe – a southern BBQ and picnic staple – gets a sophisticated update. Berries picked at peak season and marinated in limoncello liqueur are served with a delicious lemon-yogurt topping and garnished with fresh mint and toasted almond slivers. This fruit salad stands alone as a light summer dessert, or can be served over angel food cake or pound cake. For the freshest berries bursting with flavor, purchase them from your local farmer’s market or visit a pick-your-own farm nearby to get the whole family in on the preparations!

To prepare the lemon curd-yogurt topping, whisk together the yogurt, lemon curd, honey, and vanilla. Set aside. To prepare the fruit salad, combine the strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, sugar, and limoncello, and toss gently. Allow to stand at room temperature for 5-10 minutes to let berries macerate and release their juices.** Add banana and blackberries to the mixture, and gently combine.
