From The Editor
L
ike the fashion industry, the interior design industry spans a wide spectrum, from over-the-top statement pieces to practical styles and everything in between. At first,
it can be overwhelming to find that sweet spot where your budget meets your taste and still fits with your home’s size and style. After working on this Interior Design and
Decor issue for a few weeks, I began to see how finding this balance and having a
home “like you see in the magazines” is completely possible with the right inspiration and a little help from our local design professionals. In the following pages, learn about the design approach to a downtown loft, see how one Collierville family balances style and comfort, and get an in-depth look at two of the 2012 VESTA show homes. Whether your decorating tastes are firmly grounded in traditional styles or you prefer a more contemporary adobe, this issue of FIX has something to inspire every kind of interior. We’re beyond excited to announce that FIX is teaming up with our parent publication, The Commercial Appeal, for the largest garden contest in the Mid-South. Show us your green thumb for a chance to win prizes and a feature story - details on page 14. In addition, the Memphis Area Homebuilders Association is hosting the VESTA Best of Home Expressions Show this year from March 1-3. FIX will be there, along with well over 100 local businesses, to provide inspiration and ideas for every part of your home, inside and out - see pages 18, 24-25 for more details. Happy Spring!

Artist Spotlight By Holly Whitfield Photos by Jason Terrell
Jerry and Terry Lynn
B
y now, brothers Jerry and Terry Lynn are more than used to the interest in their twin-ness. While the idea of twin painters collaborating on a single canvas is certainly attention grabbing, the two quickly point out that their artistic methods developed naturally; the laid-back brothers have never sought the spotlight. Their work is a result of their individual interests in art combined with the natural presence of friendly sibling rivalry. “We were always drawing and painting when we were children. We were always competing and trying to outdo each other,” Terry laughs. As the Lynns reached their teen years, they turned their competitive motivations into a unique, collaborative process. Sometimes they take turns working on a piece, and other times they paint on the same canvas at the same time. “It’s kind of like being in a band,” Terry explains. “That kind of relationship, where we work on the same canvas, really came to fruition right as we graduated from high school.” After a few semesters at The University of Memphis, they had the fortune of meeting George Hunt, a prolific Memphis-based artist known for his depictions of Southern blues music and culture. “George has been a great mentor and friend to us over the years,” Jerry shares. The nationally known painter helped to introduce the Lynns’ work to a gallery owner on Beale Street, and the rest fell into place. “That was pretty much the start of the professional career of ‘Twin’ - my brother and I painting together,” Jerry says. Since then, their collaborative work has been included in countless galleries and exhibitions, including many at David Lusk Gallery in Memphis and Red Door Gallery in Little Rock, Ark. These days, Jerry and 20

Terry are spending time on their individual projects and developing new approaches to their work. Terry is seeking an MFA at The University of Mississippi. “I’ve been doing a lot of research and meeting other artists. I’m really enjoying it,” he explains. “My work is evolving; it’s becoming a bit more abstract and ambiguous.” One recent piece shows a country church baptism. The figures are more suggestive
than literal, and the warm tones and paint drips create a nostalgic mood that complements the narrative of the piece. Jerry teaches elementary art at Barret’s Chapel Elementary School in Arlington and is also exploring new directions in his work. “A lot of it starts with a source photograph or other material that I’ve researched. After that, imagination takes over,” he explains.
“Some of my work now is more ethereal, less realistic.” One piece, Scarlet Dreams, contains

ith a skillful mixture of tones and textures, the exterior of builder Dave Moore’s award-winning VESTA Home show house gives a hint to the rich, stylish atmosphere inside. Kristin Ganger collaborated with Dave on the interior design and décor for the VESTA home tour. Kristin, a visual merchandiser, buyer, and designer for Stash, shares an in-depth look at the design concepts, pieces, and process behind the extensive project: In the home’s interior I wanted to soften the color palette. Instead of the standard white trim and white ceilings, we went in a different direction and added some color to those areas. For all the trim in the house I selected a light gray tone, and for the ceilings I added a subtle blue-green tone. The goal in the ceiling paint choice was not as much to draw attention to the ceiling, but to create an overall softness and cozy feeling to the spaces. Since the home had generous square footage and an open floor plan, it was crucial that the colors flowed with ease, as opposed to the rooms feeling cold and segmented. The repeated pop of color throughout the house was orange, particularly for the downstairs. Orange is such a great accent color to use for contrast to the cooler palettes of gray, khaki, and neutral tones, and it also works well with other bold colors if you want a stronger color story. The exterior’s blend of natural materials—copper accents, stone work, brick and mortar in rich earth tones— flowed to the inside of the house with its wooden beams, rustic hardwood floors, natural finish of the iron stair railings, and even the granite and stone. The furnishings displayed the use of linen textures from the upholstery in the keeping room to the linens and draperies in the bedrooms to give these spaces a relaxed, light, and comfortable feeling. In the living room, several bold pieces worked to stand out and create visual interest against the soft and neutral walls, floors, and ceiling. The orange leather studded wingback chair is one of Stash’s best selling styles; it’s great for many themes of décor from traditional to transitional. The houndstooth chair is certainly a statement piece with a bold black and white color theme. It’s a great piece from an established brand, and it’s made in America. The contemporary lamp was chosen to give an edge to the accessories in this room; it also ties in with the more contemporary pieces in the bookcases and the oil painting over the fireplace. Once we saw the handmade antique rug, we knew it was meant for this house. It is a stunning work of art within itself that expresses all the colors of not only in this room but of the entire house as well.

A stunning Old-World style copper tub with air jets sits in the center of the master bath. In addition to exciting and eye-catching features, functionality is always a consideration for builder Dave Moore’s homes. “I do at least one bedroom and bathroom in all of my houses that are accessible,” Dave explains. He included three-foot doorways and a zero-threshold shower to allow access for those who use mobility devices, a choice that expresses the fast-growing trend of designing homes for multigenerational living.

The dining room table is made by one of our most popular brands and is constructed of reclaimed elm wood in a smoked wood finish with a hand-carved base. I selected these side chairs for their texture, natural hand-dyed linen, handcarved legs, and high backs, all of which bring a formality to the room. I deviated from the matching arm chairs on the ends of the table and went for a completely different host and hostess chair to bring some personality to the table. These chairs are made by the same brand as the black and white houndstooth chair in the living room. The master bedroom needed a bed that would make an impact in this largescale master suite. This four-poster bed
is from the Element Collection; I love its modern lines and the softened aesthetics of the bark finish, antique nail head, and natural handmade look. The curtains and hardware came from The Curtain Exchange. This fabric just fell into place once I brought in the selections for the master bedroom. It gave just the right amount of color, pattern, and modernism. The master bedroom pillows and the duvet, folded at the end of the bed, are from a contemporary brand that has the perfect accents of earth tones and orange for our color story. The linen spread comes from a line of hand-dyed French linens which I thought brought back the softer lifestyle theme. For the upstairs rooms, we wanted
to accommodate the extended family through defined themes in each bedroom while continuing the feel of the soft color palette of the main floor. The colors and textures continue to flow, but the more intense use of wall color and bolder, defining accessories clearly denote a boys’ and girls’ rooms. I wanted to make these rooms appeal to a younger person, but not with such a drastic or clashing color palette that we see in traditional children’s rooms. I wanted the rooms to be something that the children can grow up with. Throughout the entire home, we’ve avoided a strict classic or traditional style, but we’ve taken that and put a twist on it throughout different rooms.

Design Approach
"I have an eclectice style. I've designed anything from modern contemporary to formal and traditional, but I like mixing different elements together in a design. For example, mixing table finishes within a living room group or choosing a night stand or dresser that has a different style or finish from the bed. Most importantly, I listen to my client to see what their wants and needs are, how they live in their home, and their goal for the project."

hough the inner workings of builder Jon Ruch’s 2012 VESTA Home Show house utilize the most up-to-date technologies, the interior design and decor is elegantly traditional, with a fresh take on classic themes. “We wanted to do a twist on an Old-World look,” explains Eric Triche, co-owner of Millennium Home Furnishings in Germantown. “It’s updated, but it still has the charm inspired by some of the interior architectural features,” he adds. To create a cohesive look, Eric also worked with fellow decorator and co-owner of Millennium Home Furnishings, Robert Bowden, and the rest of the design team at the store, as well as the builder’s wife, Lynn Ruch, to put together the home’s interior. From the engaging entryway decor, to the rich texture of the upholstered dining room chairs, to the luxurious master suite, each room was carefully curated to create a balanced, elegant look. The entryway features an iron console table with a marble top, iron lamps embellished with crystals, and an ornately framed mirror. Repetition of materials like mirrors, ironwork, and glass bring a touch of sparkle to the subdued tone of the furnishings. “We’re using neutrals, like beige, light brown, gold, and some gray and white,” Eric says of the home’s color palette. “We used a neutral gray for most of the walls,” Lynn shares. “It’s not cool or warm. There’s a soft color consistency throughout the home; the gray is meant to be restful.” These muted colors are accented with wood elements, like columns encased in rich cedar paneling and decorative wood corbels handcrafted by the builder. By using similar tones but different patterns, the design team was able to create visual interest and maintain a calm, serene mood. The breakfast nook is a good example; the repetition of cream and warm green hues balances out the variation in patterns and fabrics on the chairs, rug, and curtains. In the adjacent formal dining room, lush gold upholstered chairs coordinate with the warm finish of the table and contrast with the clean lines of the chandelier. “There are some modern elements worked in to classic motifs, with some antiques or distressed finishes thrown in,” Lynn explains. The sliding doors between the breakfast nook and the dining room have a distressed finish, which provides a touch of rusticity. More green and cream hues appear in the living room, while mercury glass lamps provide a bit of glam. The stunning bookcase features arches and a distressed finish, another nod to the idea of an updated Old World design. Adjacent to the kitchen, the intimate hearth room was a challenge for the decorating team. “We wanted a gathering place for family and friends,” Lynn explains. “You can have a conversation while you’re in the kitchen, and your guests can be comfortable.” The functioning fireplace

is perfectly scaled to the intimate space, and the sectional defines the room while providing plenty of seating. The downstairs master suite is a comfortable but grand space. The master bathroom features a zero-grade walkthrough shower and employs neutral colors and luxurious textures. “The accent tile reminds me of mother-of-pearl,” Lynn describes. “We wanted the bath to be soothing and spa-like.” The stunning headboard in the bedroom set the tone for the entire room. “There's not a lot of color, but instead we have the great details in the upholstery and a mirror trim around the headboard,” Eric describes. The traditional
armoire with distressed mirror gets a modern twist with a circular door design. The recessed ceiling is painted a cool gray that contrasts with the white crown molding and blue-gray walls, creating an spacious feeling that complements the high ceilings. The decorating team from Millennium Furnishings chose handmade rugs throughout the home, adding another element of richness and texture to the rooms. “One of the comments that we got several times during the home show was people noticing an attention to details,” Eric shares. For the show, Millennium Home Furnishings provided custom floral
arrangements with some unexpected twists.

arrangements in the entryway incorporate sculptural candleholders as vessels, and the gathering of succulents on the side table in the living room are nestled in a small painted chest. Eric notes that many of the floral displays have a contemporary feel that balances out the more traditional aspects of the decor. “There are a lot of little things that we considered. The decorating staff from Millennium is very talented, and they really made this home a beautiful success.”

“Each client is different, so each approach is different. We may have a client that wants to focus on a beautiful formal room...then there are those who want a functional room with choices of materials that fit their lifestyle. We look at each client as an individual and make decisions accordingly.” - Eric
Inspiration “There is so much that inspires me everyday. It could be something as simple as a color, a beautiful hand made rug, or a handcrafted piece of furniture and my mind starts racing. Recently, a client and I were looking for a bed for the master bedroom and I came across this beautiful bed. I knew it was the one and she agreed. The rest of the room fell into place very easily. I get inspired every day in the store. Having new furnishings and accessories coming in all the time makes me feel like a kid in a candy store.” - Eric

ith two young children and busy jobs, Darrell and Katie Sneed need their home to be a peaceful sanctuary. When they moved to Collierville from Charleston last July, they began to work with a decorator, but a few months later found themselves still without a finished room. Katie decided to take matters into her own hands and began shopping for the pieces her family needed to finally settle in. Taking a recommendation from a friend, she went to Chestnut Hall Furniture and Interiors in Germantown, but had no intention of working with a designer again. “At first I said, ‘I don’t need any help, I can do this myself’,” she recalls. “But when I met Pam, she was patient and gentle and really seemed like she sincerely wanted to help.” Pam Ozment, an interior designer from Chestnut Hall, made a visit to the Sneed home for an in-person consultation. “We had a random assortment of stuff,” Katie explains. “We were discouraged because we had lived there for some time and still didn’t have a room done.” Pam provided some guidance on the selection of a round breakfast table and chairs, and the project grew from there. The Sneed family had a few “musts” for their home’s interior. They wanted a serene atmosphere and to avoid too many loud colors or styles. They also wished to create spaces that were comfortable and inviting for guests without sacrificing style. “We want to be able to host our friends and our kids’ friends,” Katie adds. “We need a livable home where people feel like they can come in and sit down, but we also wanted a nice home with high-quality furnishings.” Pam approached this project the same way that she does all of her design work—by juggling both the client’s needs and tastes with the existing pieces and her own sense of style. “We had to work around some of the things that were already purchased,” Pam explains. “Most of the walls were already painted, and so we took cues from what we already had and steered the rest in the direction that better suited Katie and Darrell.” The designer asked Katie to find magazine clippings and images online that she liked. “In everything she showed me, the chandeliers were simple, not gaudy, and everything was soft colors, and airy and light,” Pam explains. “And so that’s what I tried to do. But I always try to show my clients something that maybe they hadn’t thought of, because they may end up liking it.” Lana Zepponi is Pam’s fellow designer at Chestnut Hall and witnessed the design process for the Sneed house. She notes that their desire for a stylish but comfortable home was well-suited to Pam’s own style. “She adds so much sophistication and a little touch of glam to everything she works on,” Lana says. “But she's also so approachable and fun.”

After they finished the breakfast nook, they turned their attentions to the dining room. “For the dining room, we got to start from scratch,” Pam explains. Darrell had a vision for a more formal, dressy room with ample seating for family gatherings and entertaining. Once they found the perfect table, Pam encouraged the couple to go with something unexpected for the chairs. “These are not the obvious choice for chairs to put with that table, but it really works,” Pam shares. “Then, we found a beautiful buffet with a great black finish that really tied in with the traditional wood.” She explains that the dated concept of completely matching furniture is something to avoid when decorating current spaces. Instead, she recommends selecting pieces that go together and complement each other; this philosophy can create a more natural look and even can seem like the pieces have been collected over time. The result is a series of polished but not overdone rooms, perfect for a home where style meets comfort. “We always liked the peacefulness and the beachy feel of the places we had lived before,” Katie shares. “And Pam helped us recreate that here.”

Studied interior design at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Lambuth University, 25 years of experience, Registered Interior Designer.
Design Approach
“My personal design style is a mix of both classic and contemporary. I love the look of abstract art or the unexpected fabric with traditional furniture. I think design should be fun, and not taken so seriously...it’s really all about creating an enhanced quality of life!”
Inspiration
“I am usually inspired by something that can be used as a starting point, then all the rest of the puzzle pieces will fall right into place! I most recently helped Katie (Dr. Sneed) with a complete makeover of her newly acquired dental practice. We began the process by finding some contemporary paintings that would set the tone. We then easily chose all the other design elements based on the foundation we began to build from that artwork.”

hen Marc Hooper found a two-bedroom, light-filled loft in downtown Memphis, he saw the potential for a comfortable, modern home. “I loved the industrial feel of the exposed bricks, the 16' ceilings, the cracks in the mortar, the hardwood floors, the random fixtures in the walls and the sheer openness of the living area,” he recalls. Still, Marc needed some help to finish out the circa-1903 apartment. Interior designer Morgan Armstrong, who specializes in modern and transitional design, was well-equipped for the job. “A lot of homeowners have a hard time pulling rooms together in a way that makes sense,” she explains. “That is where I come in.” Because the loft is an historic landmark, painting or refinishing was not an option. The worn walls and industrial architecture would have to become part of the decór. “I actually loved that we couldn't paint,” Morgan recalls. “I was challenged by other ways to decorate the space and pull in color here and there.” The off-white walls, wood floors, and gray carpet in the bedrooms provided a neutral palette, with a few pops of color in the hanging artwork or throw pillows. “The process was pretty easy,” Marc recalls. “We walked around several furniture stores so she could see what I liked and didn’t like.” They learned that he was drawn to some modern pieces but also some traditional pieces. “This combination of styles is usually called transitional,” Morgan explains. For example, the clean, angular lines of sofa and chair in the living room contrast with the more traditional coffee table. A gray patterned rug spatially defines the sitting area and also matches the gray and purple pillows on the sofa. The master bedroom has rectangular bedside tables and a simple straight headboard along with textured bedding for a look that is clean but comfortable. Custom art throughout the home provides visual interest and adds to the modern feel. On one wall, what looks like a large, blue watercolor is actually the result of an inkjet printer malfunction and makes a great conversation piece. “One of the coolest things we purchased were two iron wall art pieces that hang above the twin beds in the guest room,” Morgan says of the nature-inspired sculptures. The result of a neutral palette, transitional furnishings, and carefully chosen artwork resulted in a home that expresses Marc’s own style while embracing the existing architecture. “The space is simple and comfortable,” he says. “I’ve lived in many apartments before, but they just felt like a place to stay. Now I have a home.”

Design Approach
“I try to do things that I don't see done in every home. Typically, traditional homes have a specific formula and color palette in their design. I just try to do the opposite. I think Memphis is becoming more contemporary, which gets me very excited.
Inspiration
“I'm very much inspired by the design trends of 2013. I'm using and seeing a lot of gray, neutral walls with industrial and reclaimed influences. I try to use these whenever a client will let me get away with it.”

n an unassuming building right off I-55 in Hernando, a colorful and extensive showroom is filled with unique lighting fixtures and stylish home decor. From classic sconces to shabby-chic chandeliers to popular accessories, Magnolia Lighting provides homeowners and builders with nearly endless options. “We go to Dallas to market once a year,” explains owner Pam Whitfield. “We get all of our lighting as well as our accessories there. It’s kind of like Christmas; you never know what you’ll see, or what new things you’ll find.” She explains that the residential lighting industry is a “fashion” industry, meaning that there will always be timeless, classic pieces in addition to a cycle of trends. She enjoys being able to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes at her local store by bringing national and international trends back to the Mid-South. Though their primary focus is always residential lighting, Magnolia Lighting offers plenty of home accessories and door hardware as well. Eighteen years ago, Pam came to work for her father-in-law’s business while she was pregnant with her first child. “I worked parttime at first,” she recalls. “About four years in, I suddenly had the opportunity to manage the business. I had to figure it out very quickly.” As a woman business owner in the lighting industry, Pam is in the minority. “The first time I went to market, I was very surprised to see that it was about 80 percent men who owned the businesses,” she explains. “Over the years, things have changed a little bit, and we are proud to have a lot of women who work here. All of the men and women here do all kinds of great work.” About twenty people work at Magnolia Lighting. “During the economic downturn, we were lucky enough to be able to bring in several people from other businesses that closed,” Pam says. “We were very fortunate to hire former Builder’s Speciality manager, John Wiley, who now manages the store with me. Being able to hire local people is great; it allows us to support the community.” Pam explains that her business is a part of the local economy, of both Tennessee and Mississippi. “We pay Tennessee sales tax, and we are only two miles south of Memphis,” she explains. Two years ago, Magnolia Lighting was nominated for Showroom of the Year by Residential Lighting magazine. The shopping experience is well worth the few minutes of drive time from both sides of the state line. “We take great pains to maintain an exciting showroom,” Pam explains. “We change it up all the time to keep it fresh; it’s a huge part of what we do.”

✶ ✶ ✶ Whimsical, colorful, and hospitable: Don and Barb Keith’s backyard was a clear finalist for our 2012 Garden Contest. Filled with personality and attention to detail, water features and ornamental pieces set this garden apart from your everyday backyard.

eventeen years ago, the Keiths saw an ad for a Bartlett home with a “park-like backyard” and decided to take a look. The two were surprised when they arrived to view the house. “There was a sign on the fence around the backyard that said ‘do not go in backyard, dog will bite’,” Barb recalls. Dogs or no dogs, when the couple finally got a look behind the fence, they saw a decaying deck, overcrowded trees, rotting crossties strewn across the space, and
not a single flower bed. “The ad had said ‘park-like’, but it was more like Jurassic Park,” Barb laughs. Despite the erroneous advertisement, the rest of the house suited the couple and their family well, so they decided to take on the challenge of taming the overgrown space. Since they moved in, they have turned their property into place where they can spend time with their children and grandchildren. First, they cleared out 26 trees. “Our neighbors wondered what we were doing, because there were so many
trees and limbs that we moved out,” Barb recalls. “It was hard to believe all of that debris came out of our yard!” Over the years, they’ve added a gazebo, a retaining wall, plenty of flower beds, water features, and pavers. “My husband put a lot of these things in,” Barb shares. “I helped with the design; we got our ideas mostlyv from magazines. And, of course, there has been some trial and error.” The gardeners have created a series of engaging vignettes using stacked stone, water features, and a variety of colorful, march • april 2013

In the summer, the garden is a lush and colorful place filled with hostas and azaleas. As for perennials, the couple tends to a variety of gladiolas, sunflowers, echinacea, herbs, daylilies, and gardenia bushes. The space is filled with mature sweet gum trees, a huge pecan tree, and a fifteen-foot tall Japanese maple. “We didn’t even see the Japanese maple when we first bought the house,” Barb explains. “It was a pleasant surprise, once we cleared out some of the trees.” The garden is a labor of love for the retired couple. Over the years, Don has built all of the retaining walls, drainage systems, and hardscapes himself. “My husband has worked so hard to build this garden,” Barb shares. “We spend a lot of time in gazebo in the spring, or in the patio with the outdoor fire pit.” With a variety of sitting areas and plants, Don and Barb are able to enjoy their backyard for most of the year.

directions Remove giblets and organs from the duck and rinse inside and out under cold running water, then pat dry using paper towels. Remove excess fat from the neck and the base of the cavity. Using a sharp knife or boning shears, cut the duck into pieces (2 legs, 2 thighs, 2 breasts, 2 whole wings). Lightly dust the pieces with a pinch salt and pepper. Heat dutch oven over medium heat until hot (2 minutes). Place the duck skin side down into the pan and sear for 7-8 minutes or until golden brown. Turn over and repeat. Remove duck and allow to cool on a platter, reserving the browned bits in the dutch oven. While the duck is cooking, heat a skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and stir occasionally until heated through and its fat has been rendered. Remove sausage to paper towels to drain excess oil. Reserve 2 Tbs. of oil from the skillet. In the dutch oven, make the roux. Over medium heat, add vegetable oil and reserved oil from sausage, as well as the all-purpose flour. Cook, stirring continuously until the roux has turned the color of dark chocolate, 35-45 minutes, taking care not to burn. Add onions, celery, and bell pepper and stir an additional 7-8 minutes until vegetables begin to soften. Add beer and stir until well-incorporated. Add the stock and the seasonings (next 7 ingredients) and salt and pepper. Stir thoroughly to be sure the roux, stock, and seasonings are well-blended and free of lumps. Bring the gumbo to a boil, then reduce to a slow simmer. Add the seared duck and simmer, uncovered for 1 ½ hours, stirring occasionally and skimming off any foam or residue that rises to the surface. After 1 ½ hours, remove the duck to a platter. Add okra and tomatoes. When the duck has cooled enough to be handled, remove the meat and return the meat to the gumbo. Stir in gumbo file. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. To serve, ladle gumbo over white rice. Garnish with green onions and parsley. Serve with hot sauce.

QUESTION

The family who bought this Germantown home appreciated the uniqueness of the property and the home’s potential, but they wanted to know: Can we move forward with our plans for extensive additions while still preserving the home’s original charm and appeal?
before
after
ANSWER When we evaluated the existing den, we found several architectural and interior design problems to resolve. The grooved wood ceiling ran along the length of the room and created a diminishing perspective, and the shadowing of the grooved wood made the ceiling look even lower. The round, low-hanging light fixture and heavy brick fireplace crowded the space visually and further accentuated the low ceiling height. The space also lacked natural light and did not take advantage of the attractive outdoor views. Another challenge was the opening to the adjacent room, which was located in the middle of the wall, making it difficult to group furniture around the fireplace. We collaborated with Hot Springs, Arkansas Interior Designer Julie Shaw to create a bright and open space that was more livable for the family. First, we removed the visually heavy wood ceiling, and installed beams that were perpendicular to the length of the wall. By placing the beams at this angle, we redirect the eye so as not to make the room look too long and narrow. We added beautifully stained wood paneling to all four walls; using tall wood panels gave the illusion of verticality. The opening to the adjacent room was relocated so that furniture could be better placed for conversations around the fireplace, and the height of the opening was also raised to help extend the space visually. A smooth ceiling painted in a light color, along with a carefully selected light fixture, continued the uplifting concept. The addition of tall French doors provided more natural light, and gave people the opportunity to walk out onto the newly created terrace to enjoy the views. Through these effective design strategies, we not only solved the problems, but also successfully enhanced the charm, function, and character of this room.
