cheairs
Art, she decided to go back to school. The impact on her work after the
return to academia was “profound,” she said. “That was a real turning point in my life,” said Cheairs. “The conversations between student
and teacher, and student to student added depth and new questions to my practice.” Cheairs received her master’s degree in 2007 from the University of Memphis and longed to incorporate her experiences at school into her everyday life. So, with her sculptor husband, she opened up her art studio on Flicker Street in Memphis for classes in 2010. “What we’re doing is a little unusual for this area, and needed,” said Cheairs. “We’re committed to offering high-quality community art education to students.” Cheairs and her staff teach classes to students of all levels and ages. Inspired by a class she taught on color, Cheairs used only primary colors to create the collection of oil paintings titled “Arcadia.” The collection will be will be on exhibit Nov. 20-Dec. 21 at David Lusk Gallery. The concept of Arcadia is of an “untouched and unspoiled land, a place that restores both body and spirit,” said Cheairs. “My goal with these paintings is to construct a new world from fragments of remembered experience, including pieces from childhood, art history, literature and architecture.” “In ‘The Town’ (featured in back) I wanted a sense of tension between the flatness of pure color and the deeper space that perspective creates.” – Nancy Cheairs

1
Use mementos from your travels to decorate for the holidays. Take all those shells you collected on the beach and place them in a glass jar mixed with silver and gold ornaments or display a collection of photos from your travels in coordinating frames.
2 3
Use all the Christmas cards you receive to decorate your home. Display them attractively on a wire card holder or attach them to a ribbon hung from the wall.
Use natural elements from your region of the country to decorate everything from your mantle to your front doors. In the South, we often see cotton, magnolia leaves, pine cones and spruce displayed prominently.
4 5
Place a small favor that also serves as a place card at each table setting for guests to enjoy. They will be thrilled to be taking home a personalized gift.
9
To make any holiday gathering festive, use candy to decorate and serve as dessert for your guests. Fill clear glass containers with a variety of candies that match your color scheme and provide guests with small containers to sample the sweets.
6 7
Instead of hanging the same old wreath on your front door, purchase boxwood letters and add a festive ribbon.
For a festive look, concentrate on setting a beautiful table by first layering different fabrics. Choose colors that match the theme of your party and consider mixing different prints and textures.
8
Consider using fruit as part of your dĂŠcor. Red and green apples, cranberries and oranges last quite a while, are inexpensive and really add a festive touch to a mantle or centerpiece.
9
Use stemware and sentimental family pieces to set up charming vignettes throughout your home. Mint julep cups and antique crystal are perfect containers that are easy to display. nove m b e r • dece m b e r 2013

envelopes that contain trinkets, candy, or coupons for fun activities. Label each item with the numbers 1 through 25 and let your kids open one each day through Christmas. Display your calendar by stringing envelopes on tinsel or festive ribbon or lining up the boxes on the mantel. This is one tradition your kids will count on!
2
11
Use your favorite summer containers that you just can’t bear to store all winter to set up a charming food display. Think outside the box and bring the outdoors in.
12
Create a themed Christmas tree. Using ornaments you have collected from your travels, base a tree entirely on your most recent adventure or base one on your favorite sports team using the team colors as your guide, along with mementos such as ticket stubs.

Inspired table setting on the cover
M
emories are made around the dining room table each holiday season, and we wanted to share ideas to help make your festive meals more memorable. Stacy McSpadden and Linda Perry, with Chestnut Hall Fine Furniture and Interior Design, mixed antique china with modern tableware to create the stunning setting displayed on this issue’s cover. The idea behind the setting was to use inherited pieces with newer ones to give your table a personal and unique, yet timeless look. The table is dressed with a champagne tablecloth and tea green
table runner. McSpadden placed newer Lennox holiday series dinner plates over silver and gold chargers, and then put antique salad plates on top. “Mixing the pieces makes the setting more interesting,” said McSpadden. “And family members will recognize the older china—maybe your mother or your grandmother’s things—and it just makes it more personal.” Antique crystal water glasses were paired with sleeker, more modern crystal tea glasses, adding extra pop to each place setting. At the table’s center, a floral arrangement composed by Perry draws the eye. White and gold
ornaments inside the arrangement add a decidedly holiday feel to the flowers. On each side of the arrangement sit boxwood topiaries, which McSpadden said can be used to dress up a table on any occasion. In front of the topiary, three crystal candlesticks catch light and add elegance to the spread. At each end, large ornaments enclosed in bell cloches seal the table’s Christmas theme. Lastly, in place of napkin rings, McSpadden tied the napkins with a ribbon and ornament, which could be given as party favors to guests. nove m b e r • dece m b e r 2013

Kitchen

hen Bartlett home owner Warren Zimmer relocated to Arizona in 2005 for work, he rented out his home. Upon his return in 2010, he said the house had suffered a bit of wear and tear from renters and was in need of renovation. Zimmer turned to Marble and Granite Products, of Cordova, to remodel his kitchen. Warren’s formica countertops had bowed, he said, and he wanted a cabinet design that would maximize storage. He also updated his appliances to have a complete set of stainless steel products. In three weeks, Warren’s kitchen was transformed. His cabinets were replaced with a glaze-finished cherry wood set. The custom design included a pantry built into the back side of the bar, to give Warren much-needed storage space. Warren chose beige, speckled granite countertops and a textured, glass tile backsplash. One of Warren’s favorite features, he said, is his faucet, which has a pull-out sprayer handle. Sammy James, the general manager at Marble and Granite Products, said the tiled glass backsplash is a unique kitchen feature gaining popularity with consumers. Also in the business of bathroom renovation, James said one of the hottest trends currently is the Salita stone shower. Marble and Granite Products imports the stone for the showers from Italy. Because the stone is installed without grout, cleaning and upkeep become much easier than with grouted tile, said James.

Another popular option, said James, is the cultured marble tile that Marble and Granite Products makes on site. The store offers a $3,995 bathroom renovation package that includes the cultured marble shower tile, bath tub, tile floor, toilet, sink with granite countertop and cherry wood cabinetry, said James. James uses the showroom at Marble and Granite Products to show off the latest kitchen and bathroom trends. Although Marble and Granite Products has been in business in Memphis for nearly 40 years, it only recently opened its showroom to the public. In the past, the business focused on servicing the building market as a wholesaler. But last year, the store opened its showroom to the public and began home installations. The company’s products are manufactured on site, in Cordova, Tenn.

T he Bentley by Klaussner
T heChateauCollection
The presence of the Chateau collection in the home will bring about the noble character the name suggests. The ornate detail of the collection includes elegant crown molding, nail head trim, turned and carved legs, and intricate drawer pulls. The crown molding establishes the very classic, charactered look by defining the edges and making them very prominent which is supported by the nail head trim that adds a touch of sophistication. Furthering the classic design is the turned and carved legs and drawer handles which add that little touch of style that goes a long way in contributing to the overall look and feel of this collection. The style of this collection displayed beautifully with the Old World Cherry finish on hand cut and placed veneers that make a strong presence in any room.
Enjoy the style and convenience of a slipcovered living room suite with the casual Klaussner Bentley Sofa Group. Draped in pure comfort, the Bentley features raised track arms, down blend, T-style seat cushions and a tailored waterfall skirt. The collection includes a sofa, loveseat, chair and ottoman, which can be ordered in any combination to suit the requirements of your living room or den. Customize this collection to suit your tastes and décor by choosing from the dozens of available fabric upholstery colors and patterns. The sofa, loveseat and chair each come with a pair of coordinating throw pillows to add more color and texture to the setup as well.

Dress Your Home in Ribbons&Bows By Sara P. Shirley
Photos by Nathan Berry
For years, Germantown resident Anne Combest has been lauded for her holiday decorations. In 2012, she hung wreaths with hand-crafted red ribbons over every window in her house on Rowan Lane and also used the ribbon to accent greenery around her door and entryway.
“A
s a child, I didn't know why we couldn't have colored lights,” she said. “But a wreath with a red bow, that has always stuck with me.” Last Christmas, Combest easily held on to her winning title in the city’s holiday lighting contest in the “traditional wreath” category. The trick, she said, is all in the red ribbon. Combest uses hand-crafted bows to top her wreaths, tree and mantelpiece. In fact, she makes them for most holidays and special occasions. “I probably make 200 bows a year,” Combest guessed. “People have come to expect my bows when they get a gift.” In late October, wreaths on Combest’s doors were dressed in black, purple and leopard print bows in honor of Halloween. Inside, ribbons were tied to the staircase, and boxes of Christmas ribbon had been retrieved from the attic. Combest reached inside her Christmas box and offered to show us how she makes her bows. It’s easier than you might think and only takes about 15 minutes. First, Combest suggests buying ribbon with wire. She buys hers on the internet, but also suggests going to Hobby Lobby, where you can purchase 90 feet of ribbon for $19.99 (or less, if there’s a sale). Combest suggests pulling back the bolt over the ribbon to have a better look at how much you’re really getting. Next, you’ll need pipe cleaners, which are also available online or at a crafts store. Finally, pull a pair of scissors out of your junk drawer, and you’re ready to go. nove m b e r • dece m b e r 2013
35
Make your own bows NA step-by-step guideO
Step 1
Make several loops. Combest says odd numbers of loops look and work better. Combest made seven loops in her demonstration.
Step 2
Grab a sparkly pipe cleaner, cross it over the center of your bow, and twist it together at the bottom.
Step 3
Grab another color of ribbon and repeat. When you’ve made your second bow, attach it to the first with the pipe cleaners. Repeat with as many different kinds of ribbon as you please.
Step 4
Fluff! Combest said using ribbon that already has a bit of wire on its edging helps it keep shape after you mold it to your liking.
Step 5
Cut a few of the loops to add interesting edges to the bow, then take a new pipe cleaner and fasten it to your wreath. 36

5 Now that you’re an expert, Combest suggests mixing your colors with a print. Her favorite is leopard, but any pattern gives the bow a special touch. Combest said her bows, when placed outside for the holidays, last about three years before they begin to fade or fray. For baby showers, Combest weaves pacifiers and booties into her bows. And for Christmas, she suggests adding an ornament to make the bow a gift in and of itself. nove m b e r • dece m b e r 2013

STANLEY STEEMER SERVICES Fine Area Rug Cleaning
S
tanley Steemer has cleaned area rugs in customers’ homes for years. In our constant search for better ways to service our customers, we now utilize a “submersion” cleaning process. This is the same process that the makers of area rugs in Persia and throughout Asia use to flush the rugs of dirt and excess dyes before shipping them to market. The process involves complete submersion of your area rug and gentle cleaning which flushes the fibers. This process is manually intensive and time consuming, but it allows us to remove the most dirt and contaminants from the rug. When it comes to area rugs, don’t settle for anything less than a professional rug cleaning. Why?
• Because we can give you a more thorough cleaning process that can remove the dirt that lodges inside the foundation yarns of an area rug. • It’s also the best process to remove the odor caused by pet ‘accidents’ and other contaminants • We have a safer cleaning process that involves thorough testing of the chemicals we use overnight to guard against the colors bleeding in your rug. • With our process, we have a much faster drying time that helps protect against browning and we will hand groom and clean the fringe to bring back the original beauty of your rug. Call us today to arrange pick-up of your area rugs!

Building for the modern family
By Robin J. Terry

A walk through of “The Silverton”
W
hen builder David Clark of David Clark Construction became part of the 2013 VESTA Home Show at St. James Place in Germantown, he didn’t start planning “The Silverton” from scratch. Clark used a plan for the 5,200-square-foot
home that he had put on the backburner during the recent economic slowdown. As the economy improved and the VESTA opportunity presented itself, Clark and architect Carson Looney pulled out the plan they’d been tweaking the last couple of years. Clark, a third-generation builder who is the father of two young children, said he approached the task by choosing the design for a home he would want to live in, and one that reflects how modern families really use their space. The Silverton is a home that works for families with young children, as well as for families with aging relatives in the household. Attention to detail makes the home unique and special, even before one actually gets inside. Looney and Clark chose large cypress entrance doors and cypress columns for the front porch. The cypress columns are slightly tapered. Clark said the subtle tapering was not an easy task, but one that made a huge difference in the style of the front entrance. Once inside, the welcoming foyer opens into a formal dining room, which is easily accessible from the kitchen through the butler’s pantry. The heart of Clark’s home is the open-concept common area with its central kitchen. “When you stand at the ‘command center’— the apron front sink — you can see all of that open family gathering space,” Clark said. This includes the family room, with its massive stone fireplace and built-in cabinetry, the breakfast room, and the adjacent screened-in outdoor room, which Clark said he thinks will be used quite often because of its proximity to the kitchen. With state-of-the-art design, the kitchen features granite countertops, Thermidor appliances, an easy-on-the-back raised dishwasher, and both a butler’s pantry and walk-in storage pantry. “I can easily see a party, with people in the kitchen and family room, kids playing out in the yard, and the guys gathered in the outdoor room watching football or around the grill.” Clark said. “That’s the way my family entertains.” The downstairs floor plan includes a second bedroom with private bath, an office off the side “friend’s entry” and the private master bedroom. In addition to the spacious storage in his-and-her closets, one has a unique “early morning entry,” a touch Looney nove m b e r • dece m b e r 2013

Family, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability By Robin J. Terry
F
or Jon Ruch, building his second house for the VESTA Home Show at St. James Place in Germantown meant not just building a home, but building it
better. He used this philosophy when choosing the design for his 2013 home, which is actually a modification of the home he built just down the street for the 2012 VESTA show. “But you’d never know it,” Ruch said. “We took what we really liked in that home, and just modified the plan to make it even better.” Ruch said the design of his home, “Bianco,” is all about “family, energy efficiency and sustainability,” guiding principles in all of the homes he builds. for large families and those who like to entertain. The foyer easily flows into the great room beyond, and to the formal dining room on the left. The dining room has unobstructed flow into the family room, which opens into the breakfast room, and from there, into the heart of the home--the kitchen. Furnished with state-of the-art appliances, the kitchen features a massive curved island that allows a home chef to easily see into all of the surrounding family spaces. The back wall is exposed, an interesting element that makes the white cabinetry and granite countertops all the more impressive. Added to the entertainment value is the outdoor living area just off the great room, with a builtin fire pit, and a covered patio that looks over an expansive back yard, perfect for
a future swimming pool or other outdoor feature. To the right of the foyer is a short hallway to the guest suite, with a private bath and large closet that is well suited for an older child, aging parent, or use as a private office. Off the great room is another short hallway leading to the master bedroom suite, where attention to detail makes the space not just functional, but also elegant. The bedroom opens onto an outdoor patio space, a convenient escape for morning coffee. Instead of linen closets, Ruch included free-standing linen presses, each with decorative wood details and mirror finishes that add to
A walk through “Bianco” from builder Jon Ruch the luxurious feel of the suite. Ruch said an important element in the bath is the “separate but shared” closet, with dedicated “his-and-her” spaces. One of the most interesting features in the home is immediately noticeable at the entrance and carries through to the upstairs: an intricate iron stair railing. The custom ironwork not only gives the home a unique design element, but one that provides continuity to the design that’s also seen in a custom wine rack inset in a dining room wall, and in the corbels on the kitchen island. Upstairs, the home has three more bedrooms, one with a private bath, and two sharing a Jack-n-Jill bath. Each room has spacious walk-in closets, providing extra storage functionality. At the top of the stairs is a wide hallway, with a step-up to an open sitting area perfect for a teen hangout or group study area. Rustic

W
hen planning the interior design for builder Dave Moore’s New Orleansstyle VESTA home (see pg. 42), Ashley Tony of
First Fruit Collection in Collierville drew inspiration from the “woodland, rustic feel of the house,” she said. Tony decorated the home for the holidays and included three Christmas trees in the design. The largest tree, located in the large family room at the rear of the home, was pre-lit and adorned with large brown, copper and gold ball ornaments. Warm brown tones were chosen to complement the vaulted cedar ceilings and beams. The tree is topped with a large burlap bow, and different colors of ribbon stream down the branches. Tony used gold-stamped burlap ribbon, brown mesh ribbon and a gold and brown leopard print ribbon to outfit the tree. For added dimension, Tony used large sticks with mossy pinecones as accents. Glass ornaments cast light on the ribbon, and a few ornamental birds grace the branches. A

on the coffee table in front of the tree features a fawn, surrounded by pine branches and other greenery. The fawn rests on a hollowed out piece of birch bark. To view the home in all of its holiday glory, check it out personally during the 2013 VESTA Home Show at St. James Place in Germantown. The show runs from Nov. 9 to Dec. 1. green fix By John Ruch
2x4 or 2x6 Walls? In preparing to build a house for client, a question he brought up was, “Should we frame with 2x6 walls?”
The idea was that the client would get an improved insulation package with a 2x6 wall. With a better insulation value you get a payback with a lower utility bill. You may be surprised by this anecdotal information.

Festive Pumpkin Butter Dip and Mulled Apple Cider
W
hen hosting family and friends for Thanksgiving, offering a few light appetizers helps stave off guests’ hunger and allows the cook time to make final preparations for the meal. With Thanksgiving appetizers, simplicity is important. A few easy-toprepare options give guests something to munch on while enjoying each other’s company without spoiling their appetites for the much-anticipated Thanksgiving meal.
This recipe for Festive Pumpkin Butter Dip is always a hit at gatherings this time of year, and is easy to put together using store-
bought ingredients. Feature it alongside Southern favorites such as toasted nuts and cheese straws. Add the aroma of mulled cider to the mix, and guests will never notice if the turkey is a few minutes late getting to the table!

Festive Pumpkin Butter Dip
INGREDIENTs
Mulled Apple Cider
INGREDIENTs
1 block (8 oz.) regular cream cheese 4 oz. pumpkin butter* 4 slices high-quality bacon, cooked, drained, and roughly chopped (about 4 Tbs.) 3 Tbs. chopped toasted pecans 2-3 green onions, white and light green parts only, sliced thinly (about 2 Tbs.) 1 Tbs. dried cranberries (unsweetened is best)
Directions
Cook bacon until crisp and drain on paper towels. Once cooled, give it a rough chop. In a small bowl, combine chopped bacon with toasted pecans and set it aside. Working with a butter knife or offset spatula, form chilled block of cream cheese into a square (or desired shape). Top with pumpkin butter, then bacon and toasted pecans, green onions, and lastly dried cranberries. This dip can be assembled up to two hours ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving with an assortment of crackers, or crudités. *This recipe is adapted from a Williams Sonoma recipe, which calls for their Pecan Pumpkin Butter (available seasonally at their stores). Delicious pumpkin butters also can be found at other specialty food stores and in some supermarkets, and homemade versions can be found at your local farmers’ market with other jellies and jams.
The delightful aroma of mulled cider fills the house, keeping spirits warm and moods festive. For adults who would like an extra dose of holiday cheer, serve rum on the side to be added to individual mugs.
1 gallon fresh, unfiltered apple cider (found in most supermarkets this time of year) Juice and zest (peeled with vegetable peeler) from 1 orange 4 whole cinnamon sticks 1 Tbs. whole allspice berries + ¼ teaspoon ground allspice 1 tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. ground cloves 1/3 c. brown sugar (optional; some ciders are sweeter than others, so taste it first) Spiced rum, clear rum, or brandy (optional) Garnish with cinnamon stick or thin orange slice (optional)
Directions
Combine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to lowest setting and steep for at least 30 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve immediately in mugs, or pour into a slow-cooker set to low to be kept warm for 3-4 hours.
