The YMCA at Schilling Farms opened up its outdoor pool to the community and their dogs for a good cause beneiting the Collierville Animal Shelter.

There were dogs of all sizes running and splashing in the water.

In what oicials called the irst local partnership of its kind, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital will collaborate with Memphis Area Legal Services and the University of Memphis’ Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to address the legal and social issues afecting patient health, representatives said.

Called Memphis CHiLD (Children’s Health Law Directive), the partnership will provide legal services, education and advocacy for children and their families.

It will feature a variety of training and educational programs and a legal clinic at Le Bonheur where U of M law students have devoted space to work on cases and referrals and meet with patients. The clinic will also be used to conduct training sessions with students and medical professionals. Four students are enrolled for the Fall 2015 semester, with plans to expand to eight students a semester.

Memphis Area Legal Services has contributed a fulltime attorney and a full-time caseworker to the clinic, both of whom will be directly involved in the day-to-day education and oversight of clinic work and case referrals, as well as introducing the clinic to the Memphis legal community and dealing with outside attorneys interested in assisting with pro bono work in the program. The initial focus of the collaboration will be assisting families with children sufering from severe asthma.

SCS enrollment down 4,100 from last year Decline is on track with projections

Shelby County Schools enrollment is down 4,100 students from this point in the last school year, but district oicials say the numbers are on target with projections.

With 109,496 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, the district is down from last year’s 113,596 for the same number of school days. That is 304 more students than the 109,192 anticipated by the district before the school year began. That number includes charter schools, alternative schools and special education classes.

But at $9,000 of funding per student, 4,100 students

gone means a loss of $36.9 million.

Bill White, director of planning and accountability, said a large chunk of the missing students — possibly up to 3,000 of them — is because of schools that the Achievement School District absorbed this year as part of the state takeover program.

SCS had that in mind when budgeting for this year’s enrollment, White

said. The number of students not in a charter or alternative school and not in a special education program was projected to be 95,041. That actual number as of last Monday was 94,364, a diference of 677 students.

White said making educated guesses about enrollment numbers has become increasingly challenging in the last few years with the creation of the munici-

pal school districts and the ASD, which now controls 27 schools in Shelby County and could take over six more next year.

“Given that background and those challenges, we were really pleased this year to see how close those projections really came in,” White said.

He said the district does not yet know how to attribute the loss of students who were not

in schools taken over by the ASD. Once school districts report their enrollment data to the state and it is made available to all districts, SCS can track whether its students who didn’t enroll this year left the area for another school system.

“Schools then have to start looking at where some of these students actually ended up,” he said.

he prospects for the next month’s Memphis Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony have gotten a lot more interesting. On Sept. 23, Hall of Fame oicials conirmed that this year’s three living inductees — pop superstar Justin Timberlake, soul man Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, and rock and roll pioneer Scotty Moore — are all “scheduled to appear” at the Oct. 17 ceremonies at The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

Others set to be enshrined are country-pop hit maker Charlie Rich, blues songstress Alberta Hunter, Booker T & the MGs drumming legend Al Jackson, Jr., and piano great Memphis Slim.

The seven member class of 2015 will join 47 previous inductees — including B.B. King, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding and others — bringing the total number of hall members to 54.

The inclusion of Millington native Timberlake is sure to add to the luster of the annual event.

When asked about this year’s event, Laura Todd, Main Street Collierville’s executive director was ecstatic.

“We are so proud that for the irst time our event was sold out,” Todd said.

“Every ticket, all 700, were spoken for two days before we opened our doors. The second thing we were happy about is Fedex became the event’s title sponsor. We welcome them to the party.”

Memphis Music Hall of Fame head John Doyle said that while Timberlake’s representatives have conirmed he will appear, there’s no indication he will perform. “Given the status of inductees from Memphis, and the demand to see them, it’s always diicult to work around their schedules and get them to come to town,” said Doyle. “We’re thrilled that this year our living inductees are all currently scheduled to attend.”

While Scotty Moore will not perform, having retired from

the stage several years ago, Sam Moore is expected to sing as part of a tribute to Sam & Dave. Charlie Rich Jr. is also slated to do a medley of his father’s songs. The late Al Jackson Jr. will be honored by a group of musicians, including noted drummers Steve Jordan and Jim Keltner — who are staging a multiday tribute to Jackson around the ceremonies. Doyle adds that “there will be other talent added and announced prior to the show.”

Family representatives of Al Jackson and Dave Prater of Sam and Dave will also be present.

Memphis Slim’s daughter, who lives in Paris, is not expected to attend. Alberta Hunter has no living descendants.

Germantown Municipal Schools will make every effort to record all meetings and post video on its website, based on policy change the board made Sept. 23.

The issue arose two weeks ago when a parent, Sheila Starkey Hahn, volunteered to personally record the meetings. Board chairman, Lisa Parker, took exception, saying she saw no reason board workshops, meetings where board members talk out agenda items, should be recorded.

State law does not require school boards to allow cameras in their meetings.

However, most boards allow them as long as they do not impede the meeting or create a safety hazard.

Until Sept. 23, the board’s policy required citizens receive permission. Under the new policy, the superintendent will see to it meetings are recorded and placed for public viewing, and members of the public also may videotape the meetings.

Duo arrested in attempted robbery

Germantown police have arrested two teenagers in connection with an armed robbery in which shots were ired after a football game last Friday.

The two 15-year-olds — one a student at Germantown High and the other from Manassas — were charged with six counts of criminal attempt to commit aggravated robbery in connection with the incident at C.O. Franklin Park.

Both suspects were taken to Shelby County Juvenile Court.

The victims said they were walking to their car along Melanie Smith Lane in the park when the two demanded their cellphones. The victims didn’t surrender their phones, and as they got in their car to drive away, the suspects ired shots at them.

10th annual Kids Triathlon More than 100 participants compete in race

emphis Thunder Racing staged its 10th annual Kids Triathlon Sept. 20 at the Compton Aquatic Center, as well as the roads and parking area at St. George’s Independent School in Collierville.

During the triathlon, the young competitors biked, swam and ran to the finish line. The competitors were divided into the junior and senior divisions. The senior age division competed in distances twice the length of those in the junior age group.

The triathlon drew competitors from around the area, including

Paris, Tenn., Tupelo and Paragould, Ark. In all, approximately 180 came to St. George’s to compete.

The winners are: Juniors

First: Pierce Hill, Arlington Second: Ethan Ford, Lakeland Third: Rebecca Roman, Collierville Fourth: Charlotte Coulston, Paris, Tenn.

Entrepreneurs write their own course, ticket Three Lausanne seniors are creating an app to support everyday mental health

Lots of 17-year-olds have enough energy to change the world. Ashley Thomas, Savannah Woods and Hannah Jordan have an actual plan. If it comes even close to the 56-page business outline they sold to administrators at Lausanne Collegiate School early last month, they will be the irst in school history to create their own course and parlay it into a business.

“If this falls through, we’re going to pick up the pieces and go back to the drawing board,” said Jordan, an intrepid, invincible type. If the energy that bubbles in her is the reason she has curly hair, she’s a long-burning irecracker.

“Never has our Plan Z been let’s just give up,” she said. “We really do have an idea about how to get this going.”

The CEO is Thomas, a seemingly quiet, introspective young woman with a drive to improve the world, starting with the angst of her own age group.

Thomas and Woods are from Collierville; Jordan is from Germantown.

In May, Mental Health Month, they hope to launch SupportMe, a free self-help app with accompanying website aimed at improving society’s everyday mental heath, beginning with teens, although they have no intention of limiting to a demographic.

“Everyone has mental health and everyone needs to improve

theirs,” said Woods, a irm, nononsense kind of entrepreneur who answers question in declarative statements. She neither vacillates nor giggles “We want to provide a mental health resource for those in situations where they don’t have other places to go, and provide information, inspiration and suggestions for coping skills,” she said.

Their course, Entrepreneurship and Business Technology, breaks down in the weekly and quarterly goals they have to accomplish, including raising “tens of thousands of dollars” to fund the level of programming the app will require.

“We want to have a superior product, but we also have superior intentions behind our product,” Thomas said. “We are looking for angel investors, but we’re also looking to apply for government grants. In the next little while, we’ll become incorporated and ile for our IRS taxexempt status.”

The app will be based on dialectical behavior therapy, a behavioral psychotherapy developed in the 1980s by Dr. Marsha L. Linehan. It was originally for people with borderline personality disorders who experienced wild swings in emotion and saw the world and their own circumstances in black-and-white extremes. By learning to see life on a broader continuum — and with less judgment — Linehan was successful in reducing suicide and self-harming behavior in her clients.

Besides giving deinitions of various mental illnesses, the app will also let users type in an emotion, such as anxious, and access a list of coping skills and games designed to mitigate the paralysis.

“We think this is the most important thing,” Woods said. “It’s hard to change what you can’t

understand.”

The app will also ofer examples of what the day will be like with a particular piece of emotional baggage.

The three have distilled “DBT” into their own lives to the degree that they gently correct each other.

“If I’m driving with Savannah

and I say something like, ‘I feel weird about this,’ she’ll say, ‘That sounds like a judgment,’” Jordan said.

The one-credit elective is not in the course catalog, but it will be next year, said Dr. Stephen Campbell, assistant head of the upper school.

“Our school encourages leadership. We have 53 clubs. All of them were started by students,” he said.

Before he gave permission, Campbell gave the girls two weeks to pull the class schedule together and organize the structure.

“They did it,” he said. “We’ve assigned them to a teacher, who meets with them once a week.”

It’s up to them to ind the rest of the experts they will need to succeed. And their grades will be based on how well they adapt.

“We are not assessing them on whether or not they launch the app, although we really hope they do,” Campbell said. “We’re looking at the things they learn.”

Germantown Elementary students celebrated International Literacy Day on Sept. 8. Students were asked to dress in their grade-level country for the day. Students also donated money for the week to send to the World Literacy Foundation. Germantown Elementary raised more than $1,000. Teachers also spoke with students about the importance of literacy and either did a group writing activity or independent writing on how to improve literacy.

Houston High golfer to play for Team USA in junior cup

Since an early age, Jayna Choi, now a freshman at Houston High School, commanded attention for her prodigious goling ability.

Her parents, Kwang and Myung Choi emigrated to America from South Korea. Choi’s father is a FedEx IT and her mother is a lutist. As for golf? Jacob Choi, her older brother is a sophomore at Baylor University where he plays on the men’s golf team.

The brother and sister pair played golf together until a time when Jayna required a professional golf coach.

“I always spent time with my brother while he was practicing, playing in

tournaments, or taking golf lessons,” said Choi on how she got her start in golf. Her coach, Dan Brown, is a golf instructor at Spring Creek Ranch in Collierville. Together for many years, Choi shows overwhelming gratitude for Brown’s tutelage. “He teaches me all parts of golf — not only swing and short game, but also how to think and manage each game.”

Choi was chosen to represent Team USA for the 2015 Evian Championship Junior Cup in France. Her list of golf accomplishments is quite impressive, including earning No. 18 rank in the current Polo Golf national rankings, No. 1 in the Polo Golf state rankings, semiinalist in the 2015 U.S. Girls Junior

Championship, just to name a few.

When not playing golf, Choi enjoys hanging out with friends, watching the Disney Channel, listening to music, eating at Chipotle or checking out Instagram. Often found at church, she says, “I try must best to glorify God no matter where I am, what I do, or what I will be.” A very regular teenager around the house and the Houston High campus, Choi adds, “I love Houston High because the school not only has a great academic program and has great teachers and staf, but it also greatly supports sports activities.”

Houston junior quarterback Garrett Bates had a strong second half to help the Mustangs rally against No. 1 Whitehaven. Bates completed 11-of-18 passes in the second half to help Houston rally from a 20-3 deficit. This Friday the Mustangs will play at Collierville.

As coach of the top-ranked team in the Dandy Dozen, Whitehaven’s Rodney Saulsberry knows his team will get everyone’s best shot.

Houston (1-5, 1-2 in Region 4-6A) battled Whitehaven (5-1, 2-1) down to the wire Friday night, but the topranked Tigers held irm in the inal minutes in a tough road contest and escaped with a 27-17 victory.

“I told the guys all week, don’t play the record, play the team,” Saulsberry said. “I know (Houston head coach) Will Hudgens does a great job with those guys. They’re a wellcoached team.”

Houston came back from a 20-3 deicit in the fourth quarter to cut Whitehaven’s lead to three with six minutes to go. Two plays later, junior running back Kylan Watkins cut up the middle for a 66-yard touchdown run to put the game away.

“I was patient,” Watkins said. “Before that, I was rushing it. I let my offensive line get their blocks together.

I trust my line.”

Whitehaven’s backield has lost two players to injuries this season, forcing Watkins to be the primary ball carrier. Watkins proved he is up to the task, rushing for 216 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s ready,” Saulsberry said. “We told Kylan it’s on his back. We know he can do it. We expect those things from him.”

Watkins said he’s prepared all season to be ready when his number is called. He added a 47-yard touchdown reception, and a 50-yard touchdown catch was called back due to a penalty.

“My role is important because we have a lot of backs out,” Watkins said. “I’ve got to step up. Coach told me early in the season that I’ve got to be ready, so I come out ready every game.”

At 5-1, Whitehaven will turn its focus to White Station and star receiver Dillon Mitchell.

“Our focus has to be on stopping the big play,” Saulsberry said. “Our job is to make them work the ball down the ield. If you play defense, you can win any football game.”

Facing a 20-3 deicit in the fourth quarter, Houston quarterback Garrett Bates led his team down the ield twice to score touchdowns and steal the momentum.

Bates struggled in the irst half, completing only 1 of 11 passes. But he found a rhythm in the second half, completing 11 of 18 passes.

First, Bates found junior receiver Emmett Whitaker for a touchdown in the right corner of the end zone.

After an onside kick, Bates again led his team down the ield. He threw to senior receiver Chanse Pullen, who caught a jump ball against double coverage. “(Bates) has done a great job and made great strides in four weeks,” Hudgens said. “He’s only played four games in high school. He didn’t get any reps as a freshman and sophomore due to injuries.”

Hudgens walked of the ield proud of his team’s efort and he said he hopes to carry some momentum into this week’s game against Collierville.

“We’re growing as a team with (Bates),” Hudgens said. “The energy and heart of our team, we can’t ask for much more out of these guys.”

Red Devils fall to unbeaten Wolves

Cordova football coach Anthony Jones knows 6A road wins are hard to come by, even against a struggling program like the Germantown Red Devils.

The Wolves’ defense, ranked No. 1 in the city, lived up to its billing Friday night by forcing four turnovers and was complemented by a highscoring ofense that led to a 42-6 victory at Ken Netherland Stadium.

Junior quarterback Devin Coleman threw three irst-half touchdown passes as Cordova cruised to its sixth consecutive victory; the Wolves are 3-0 in Region 4-6A. “It’s always a good feeling (to beat a 6A team on the road),” Jones said.

“We had to make sure we came in confident and we wanted to make sure we did everything right.

Cordova, 6 -0 and ranked No. 8 in The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen, is one of three undefeated teams in the area (Munford and Northpoint are the others).

Initially, the game had signs of becoming a defensive struggle. Each team started its opening possession near midield and neither team made a irst down.

On the Red Devils’ second possession, a mishandled snap at their 10-

yard line led to a fumble recovery by Cordova senior defensive end Frank Clemons. Coleman found junior wide receiver Edward Johnson for a 16yard touchdown, and Cordova took a 7-0 lead with 8:57 remaining in the irst quarter.

A scoreless streak by Germantown’s offense reached 10 quarters before junior quarterback Miles Guyton’s nine-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Red Devils (2-4, 1-2) had only three irst downs in the opening half, and two came on personal foul calls on the Cordova defense.

Even when the Red Devils had a rare big play on ofense, a 37-yard run by senior running back Davinci Leavy, the Wolves’ defense did not let Germantown advance any farther.

The Cordova ofense kept iring on all cylinders as Coleman threw touchdown passes of 27 and 25 yards and senior running back Donta Franklin ran in from 25 yards, all in the irst half.

“It started up front with my O-line,” Coleman said. “They gave me time to throw the ball and (I) made stuf happen.”

After Guyton’s touchdown, Cordova scored two touchdowns in 55 seconds to take a 42-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Cordova’s defense has given up 28 points in six games this season, fewer than ive per game.

Next week, Germantown will travel to take on Bartlett, and Cordova will go on the road to face Arlington.

Collierville’s defense kept Arlington’s explosive ofense in check for most of Friday’s game.

With a congregation having many pet lovers, Balentine-Downey said, “It was a good way to show our appreciation to God for critters who love us unconditionally. It reminds us we have a responsibility to care for our pets but not just them, all creatures of the earth.”

Balentine-Downey has two cats of her own, Tiger and Crickett.

Pastor Kris Roof, and his wife, Alyssa, have two retired racing greyhounds named JayJay and Tucker.

While he has never attended a Blessing of the Animals, he has been interested in one ever since it was discussed in seminary.

“This year it all fell into place for Peace Tree to team up with St. Mark’s.

Pets are a part of our family, but society tells us we can’t bring them to church.

Being able to bless them during a church service is a meaningful event for the whole family,” Kris Roof said.

Blessing of the Animals has traditionally occurred around Oct. 4, the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi who was known for his love of all creatures.

Traditionally recognized

by Roman Catholics and Episcopalians, many faith traditions from Baptists to Methodists to Unitarians are now discovering it is a way to celebrate creation.

Tennessee Tourism Commissioner Kevin Triplett addressed the general membership at noon on September 9th at Ridgeway Country Club. He discussed the economic impact of the tourism industry in Tennessee.

Triplett’s visit was timely, since on August 18th, Governor Bill Haslam announcedrecord-breakingeconomic impact numbers with tourism revenues in Shelby County up 4.6%.
