That is the main story coming into the Sugar Bowl. It is not about Florida's Tim Tebow playing his final collegiate game. It is not about Cincinnati being undefeated and having an outside chance at a shared national title if they can deliver an impressive win. It is more about the coaching situations. Cincinnati's Brian Kelly abandoned the team for the new lead job at Notre Dame. Florida's Urban Meyer has decided to take a leave of absence for health reasons as well. These are subplots behind both teams that have overshadowed what has happened on the field. What has happened on the field has been very good for both schools as well. Florida missed out on a chance to play for its third national title in four years. The Gators were perfect all season long until getting beaten by Alabama in the SEC championship game. The Gators ran away with the SEC's east division, winning it by four games. No one in the division really challenged the Gators, either. Only Arkansas, who blew a late lead in the Swamp, gave them a serious challenge when Florida won 23-20 on a late field goal. Still, Florida expected more this year. Not playing in the title game is a disappointment. Cincinnati had possibly the best season in school history. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the one upset they needed by Texas or Alabama to get into the title game. When Texas won on a late field goal over Nebraska it sent the undefeated Bearcats to the Sugar Bowl despite the fact they had the best season in school history. Cincinnati rolled through the Big East, winning the conference in a last minute one point win at Pittsburgh. They also grabbed quality non-conference wins over Oregon State and Fresno State. Still, they have yet to face a team as good as Florida. Cincinnati has gotten he job done despite replacing most of its defense from a BCS bowl season last year. They also survived an injury to great quarterback Tony Pike. Pike threw for more than 2,300 yards and 26 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He even missed three games and saw limited action in three more because of a broken hand. Zach Collaros was even better as his backup. Collaros completed 75% of his passes for 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns against two interceptions. Not to be outdone, Isaiah Pead provides a respectable rushing attack with 758 yards and nine scores. Florida is still Florida, however, and they are led by one of the best quarterbacks in college
football history. Tim Tebow will leave school with nearly every conceivable SEC record. He is both a rushing and a passing threat. This one man wrecking crew won a Heisman in his career, two national championships, and has lost only seven times in four years. He has also only lost once in a bowl game. He will everything he can to make sure his final collegiate game is a happy memory for Gator fans everywhere. Writer and editor, Freddie Brister, is a former high school football coach of 25 years.
