01 BOTANICAL GARDEN & PUBLIC PAVILION BHATHINDA, PUNJAB 2023

DESIGN BRIEF A call for proposals by the Bhathinda Municipal Corporation, to invest in the city’s ecological infrastructure.

MY ROLE

‘The botanical garden would serve as a focal point for conservation of ecosystems and biospheres, environmental education, research and recreation for nature lovers, environmental governance and management’.

Programming spaces by type and area based on functional requirements and the client’s criteria

Coordination with Consultants, requirements within fixed budget.

Creating renders and representational graphics

Preparation

Exploration and Development of Form for Thin Tile Timbrel Brick Vault, using Rhino and Grasshopper Plugins.

Our proposal for the botanical garden interweaves ecology, habitat and culture of Punjab at various levels, through sustainable education for development, spaces for recreation and public use, and conservation of the native ecological typologies of Punjab. The aim was to establish an ambitious Botanical Garden, that could also become an institution which creates an impact far beyond its boundaries.

SITE CONTEXT

USE OF EXISTING FEATURES ON SITE We did a detailed mapping of trees on site, including species, current size of the tree trunk, its approximate canopy. This was done in order to ensure that none of the major trees are harmed during the construction. Also, we could closely study the various parts of the site w.r.t to the trees. For example, the canal is next to one part of the boundary wall which has existing Eucalyptus trees growing. This tree is an important story in Punjab for helping against water logging and yet in other places it can also cause problems by absorbing too much water. Our Arboretum will be located close to these existing Eucalyptus trees.

DESIGN PROPOSAL DESIGN OF ECOLOGY AND LANDSCAPE

The proposed botanical garden comprises of 3 ecological regions •

The Tibba ( dry and sandy ) Landscape

The Scrub Forest ( Dry Deciduous type ) •

The Lakhi Forest ( Moist Type )

DESIGN OF WATER SCAPE AND WATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

2 •

By combining bio swales, retention ponds, and recharging wells and deep bores, the project establishes a comprehensive water recharge and site drainage system.

Use of existing water supply infrastructure on site, and integration of existing water storage in architectural design

MASTER-PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

1 •

Use of Experimentative Forms and Structures, to create intrigue and invite residents, and create inclusive public spaces for residents of Bhathinda city, along with fulfilling programmatic requirements of administrative and official spaces.

2 WATERSCAPE DESIGN

As the site is so closely associated with the Waterworks, the use of water for water channels as well as for rainwater management have played a huge role in the overall arrangement of various features on the site. The rainwater is being collected on site such that it can help create the ecological habitats that we wish to create on site.

Details such as natural bioswales, bores and lined water channels have been incorporated into the site.

CONCEPT

DETAILED PLANTING DESIGN

ECO ZONES OF PUNJAB The proposed botanical garden in Bathinda draws inspiration from the historical landscapes of Punjab that have changed over a course of time due to various ecological and cultural shifts. By envisioning and recreating the past, the garden prompts visitors to imagine the diverse flora and fauna that once thrived in this region.

02 ANANDA SUSTAINABLE FARMHOUSE CHANDIGARH 2021

DESIGN BRIEF The client wanted to create a truly sustainable built structure, on land they had reclaimed through permaculture techniques, over 10 years. Their primary aim, with the land was to build a ‘food forest’ using natural farming techniques, and harvesting rainwater. They wanted the built structure to reflect the same. We achieved this by designing around and incorporating sustainable materials and systems as well as designing for a life-style that requires less energy and makes use of resources available locally.

At the foothills of the Shivaliks, in the midst of a permaculture farm, we designed one of the first rammed earth buildings in the region. The farmhouse design for Aanandaa Permaculture speaks to its surroundings, reaching out to the farm and the pond, and integrating outdoor and indoor spaces, such that the spaces of the farm and the home flow into each other. Built with 13-16” inches thick rammed earth walls, landscaped courtyards and several different roofing techniques in natural materials, the farmhouse offers a climate responsive and pleasant experience. It is a repository of sustainable building materials and techniques. Our challenge was to incorporate this rich and diverse vocabulary and yet offer a coherent contiguous living space.

03 ADAPTIVE RE-USE & AFFORDABLE HOUSING COTTON MILLS , MUMBAI ACADEMIC PROJECT 2021-23

DESIGN BRIEF To design a model for affordable housing, and create a livable, green community in the abandoned mills of Mumbai, that are a valuable source of open land in Mumbai, along with being markers of its historical heritage. SELECTION OF SITE

HISTORY OF THE MILLS

The industrial architecture of the mill site is the visual identity of Girangaon, some of the mill structures are structurally sound till date and may be re-used for various purposes for the community. The proposed housing can be seen as a mixed use development.

The mills of Girangaon were once integral to Mumbai’s economy, particularly during the British colonial period, when Mumbai (then known as Bombay) was often referred to as the “Manchester of the East”. However, with the development of newer industries in and around Mumbai, these mills ceased to be profitable, and fell into a state of disrepair.

Simultaneous development of recreational space and restoration of mill structures may generate economic opportunities, within the site itself.

The housing was designed keeping in line with various bye-laws and design guidelines of the Municipal Corporation and the MHADA guidelines.

04 B.ARCH THESIS INTERWEAVING HERITAGE AND RAPIDLY URBANIZING SPACES ACADEMIC PROJECT 2020

How does a medieval fortress town, still remain relevant in the hyper - urban present ? Are current redevelopment efforts enough to preserve the characteristics of the place ? What parts of the past do we take forward, and which do we let erode away to time ? “In a context of rapid urbanization, old cities struggle to modernize without completely losing their character. In the absence of a strategic public intervention to steer their transformation, many of them simply drift into a haphazard mix of demolition, new construction, and building upgrading. Their overall densification, which is certainly welcome from an economic point of view, is oft en accompanied by the displacement of the original population, which is more questionable from a social point of view.

The level of economic activity these cities can sustain typically increases, sometimes substantially, but in the process these places also lose their distinctive traits and become less livable.”[10] It was essential to maintain the balance between retaining heritage, economic viability and creating spaces that added to the livability of the city, while creating modern, urban amenities. The aim of thesis thus became, to engage with the tangible and intangible culture and heritage of Indian Streets, and to emphasise the inherent social nature of the Street, to find the essential elements that make the quality of the spaces, especially in such a heritage zone, with a history and story that surrounds the built spaces, and to appropriately conserve and provide interventions that inter-weave a contemporary narrative into the site.

35

A Historical Sketch of the City “Heritage is an act of remembering the past, to engage with the present “

STUDYING THE CONTEXT AND THE MEANING OF TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE When designing for such a historically important, iconic place, one must ask the essential question of, What is heritage ? What must one preserve and what must be foregone ? These questions became essential to address the question of modernization, of a heritage space. ‘Heritage is a value attributed to things(tangible and intangible) that have certain cultural significance. It is not a value pertaining only to usefulness, benefit or intellectual enterprise, but also to things that play a symbolic, instrumental and other functions in a society. ‘
