Edvin Nilsson, park ranger in Sarek National Park, vouches for the 1965 Fjällräven Thermo Tent in a catalogue from the same year: “Get equipment you can rely on”.

Finally you could wake up warm and dry in a tent.

1965:

our first tent When Fjällräven unveiled the first Termo tent in 1965, it created a sensation that set a standard for how tents should be made that is still in place today. In the early 1960s, most tents were made from a single layer of cotton fabric and they were heavy. When dry, they weighed around three to four kilograms – when wet almost twice that.   The alternative was a synthetic tent, but these were either so thin that moisture could

force its way into the tent or so waterproof that condensation got trapped, and the air inside was as humid as a rain forest. Since Fjällräven’s founder, Åke Nordin, neither liked carrying a heavy pack nor waking up in a wet sleeping bag, he decided to try to solve the problem.   After countless sketches and prototypes, Åke found a solution that was as simple as it was genius. By combining a waterproof

Explorer and researcher Jan Lindblad vouches for the Fjällräven tent being “airy and comfortable even in the warm and humid rainforest”. 6

outer tent with a ventilating inner tent, moisture was released from the living area. Condensation was then ventilated out from the inside of the flysheet. Finally, it was possible to wake up warm and dry when out in the wilderness.   In 1965, the first Termo tent was released onto the market. The flysheet was a strong waterproof polyester and the inner tent was a thin, highly ventilating Ripstop polyamide fabric. Weighing in at 1.4 kilograms, it was extremely light and became a resounding success. The following year, a new version of the tent was designed specifically for

the Scandinavian Greenland Expedition. It was made larger to reduce “psychological friction" between the occupants who would be spending two months in close quarters with each other.     Again, the tent was a huge success.

The simple principle behind the Thermo Tent.

Thermo G66. A tent designed specifically for the Scandinavian Greenland Expedition of 1966. It was larger than conventional mountain tents so as to reduce “psychological friction” between the occupants taking part on the two-month expedition.

We strive to make nature more accessible to all.

OUR TENTS TODAY Since that first tent in 1965, Fjällräven’s tents have become renowned worldwide for their reliability and functionality and are greatly appreciated by people from all walks of life. This is and always will be important to us, since our development strategy is a direct consequence of our ongoing mission to make nature more accessible to all.   As a result, each tent model has a specific purpose and it is easy to choose between them depending on which situations and seasons you plan to use your tent in. There is something in our range for every occasion, from

simple, everyday adventures to challenging, extreme expeditions.   Fjällräven has three tent families: Abisko – for all types of outdoor life, with really low weight, Keb – for when you need extra durability and reliability all year round, and Polar – specialised for winter use in the most demanding and challenging conditions you can imagine. The Arctic, for example.   The very best lightweight fabrics, with the highest performance ratings, are made from nylon. And for our Abisko and Keb tents we use an incredibly strong lightweight fabric

9

in Triple Ripstop nylon that has excellent performance ratings. At the same time, we know that polyester gives excellent stability and doesn’t stretch when wet. So since Arctic expedition tents are often left unattended and used for longer periods in extreme environments, we have used polyester fabrics for our Polar tent.   A Fjällräven tent has to have a long lifespan and should serve you well for many, many outdoor experiences. Buying the right tent from the beginning and caring for it properly will mean you won’t need to go tent shopping again for many years. This is one of the most important aspects of sustainability and a factor that you can influence by purchasing quality products that will last for a long time.    From our side, we have chosen to treat the Ripstop nylon on both sides with a total of four layers of silicon for excellent durability and a longer lifespan.   The inner tent fabric is impregnated with a water resistant treatment that is totally free from toxic fluorocarbons, and we don’t use flame-retardants or PVC plastic in the production process. This means that no harmful chemicals or hormone-damaging substances are released into the environment during the production of our tents.   All our tent poles come from world-leading manufacturer DAC, a supplier that has minimising environmental impact high on their agenda regarding the production of aluminium. Their production plant has the best possible levels of resource use, chemical handling, and emissions.   All of this contributes further towards making our tents a more sustainable alternative.

Ripstop nylon with four layers of silicon ensures long-lasting durability and strength.   We use a strong, dense thread that swells when it gets wet. This expandable thread passes through extremely small holes made by very fine needles making seams waterproof.

10

“ From the drawing board to the final product takes three years of development and testing.” Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius / Senior Designer at Fjällräven

How are Fjällräven tents developed?

Are there any disadvantages with nylon?

“When we develop our tents, we start by setting objectives:   What conditions the tent should be able to handle, how much space is needed, how much it can weigh and so on. Then we make a prototype that we test ourselves before giving it to our test team to try out and evaluate.    The test team includes mountain guides and members of the military, plus other outdoor enthusiasts.   After this we make the tent with the materials we have planned to use and test it further both in the field and the lab. After analysing results from wind-tunnel and rain tests we make any final adjustments needed.   The whole process takes at least three years from the first sketch to the finished product ready for the market.”

“Nylon stretches a little when wet so you might need to tighten guylines in some conditions. And it can also shrink a little in warm, dry weather. This is good to know so you can adjust the guylines accordingly. But the benefits of using nylon far outweigh this.”

Why are almost all the tents made from nylon? “To make really lightweight tents of high quality we found that nylon is the best alternative. Previously, we have worked with polyester but it is heavier per square metre for the same performance levels.”

What about our environmental impact? “We do not use fluorocarbons (PFCs) in our impregnation, which is very important. We also completely avoid PVCs in all our manufacturing processes.   Our supplier of poles and pegs has succeeded in creating a sustainable method of anodising aluminium, which means a far better dyeing process. And we make tents that will last a long time.”

if you want to blend in with your surroundings then you can choose green or sand depending on where you will primarily use your tent. Then of course different colours cast different light inside the tent, so this might influence your decision as well, depending on what you prefer.”

Which is your favourite tent? “Abisko Shape. It compares really well to the others regarding weight, strength and wind stability and it has space for both you and your equipment. It is the essence of a Fjällräven tent that is built on the Scandinavian tradition of tunnel tents. It is also really easy to pitch.”

Why four different colours? “You should be able to choose a tent that is clearly visible in the terrain, and for this we have UN Blue. Our Polar tent, which is a specialised winter tent, is orange as this is more easily seen than blue in snow. And

By combining two fabric weights in the flysheet, we have achieved very high tear strength and durability against abrasion on the sections that are subjected to the most wear, at the same time as keeping the total weight of the tent down.   Abisko tents are made primarily from 20D nylon with 40D reinforcements in a slightly darker nuance, while Keb tents are made from 40D nylon with 70D reinforcements in TripleRipor70D Use flysheet black. External pole aluminium alloy. DACsleeves is the company that best matches our high demands on performance and quality; their many years of development work have resulted in the construction of tent poles of the highest standard.   Abisko tents use DAC Featherlite NSL poles that have a wider diameter at the connection points, making them lightweight and extremely reliable. For our Keb and Polar models we have chosen the even stronger DAC Auto-lock zippers Pressfit poles for extra reliability and strength in high winds. The Pressfit poles have a constant diameter, making them even more suitable for double pole use. Exact pole dimensions have been optimised for each tent model and the poles are pre-bent for the best possible functionality.   DAC has been working with environmental issues for a long time and has one of the world's cleanest aluminium anodising plants – a factor that made our choice of supplier even easier.

All tent models have external pole sleeves, which give high stability as they keep the tent fabric taut and the poles are always in the correct position. This also facilitates pitching the tent, as external sleeves are more easily accessed. Silicon treatment reduces friction and the risk of poles getting stuck when inserted into the sleeves is minimised.   Another detail is that all pole sleeves have room for double poles for extra stability in extreme conditions. The Polar tent comes with a double set of poles, and extra pole sets are available for Keb and Abisko tents as an accessory.

Pegs

Foxfeet Fjällräven’s very own adjustable pole holders, called foxfeet, make it easy to pitch the tent in all kinds of weather.   Their design has room for double poles for extra stability when camping in exposed conditions. (A double set of poles is included with thePegs Polar tent, and extra sets are available as an accessory for the Keb and Abisko models.)

Effective and adjustable ventilation

Au to

All tent models have at least two large ventilation openings, which are often placed opposite each other for maximum air circulation. This not only gives a comfortable temperature inside the tent, it also minimises condensation.   Ventilation openings are placed up high to take advantage of the chimney effect – as warm air rises and is ventilated out, new fresh air is pulled in from below.   The vents in the flysheet are fully adjustable – they can be opened or closed completely – so you can adjust them for the perfect balance between the perfect inside temperature and air circulation – the double pullers on the vents’ zippers let you decide exactly where and how much air is let in.

vents on the Keb and Polar tents can be completely closed with inner tent fabric. The doors in the inner tent can always be completely closed with both mesh and inner tent fabric doors (with the exception of Abisko View that only has mesh doors).

Half-way roll-up On Abisko and Keb models, the flysheet’s doors can also be rolled up and locked in a half-open position thanks to the YKK-pullers auto lock function. This gives exceptionally good ventilation at the same time as you have great protection from rain coming into the inner tent.

No-see-um mesh Mesh openings are covered with a very fine, ventilating mesh that keeps even the smallest (and most irritating) insects outside the tent. (No-see-ums are insects that are so small they are almost impossible to see.)

Guyline YKK with auto lock function Fjällräven uses only strong YKK zippers in all openings to ensure fault-free functioning. On Keb and Abisko the pullers have an auto lock function that enables the door to be half open without the risk of the zippers going up even in high winds.   Polar tents have even stronger door zippers but without the auto lock mechanisam.

Pegs Abisko tents have tent pegs that are 160 mm long and v-shaped. Keb tents have v-shaped tent pegs that are 200 mm long and wider, to give even better hold in difficult terrain and/or under heavy strain in hard winds.  Both Abisko and Keb tent pegs can be used horizontally as anchors in loose ground. In very loose ground like snow and sand, the tents can be complemented with a specific Snow/ Sand Peg.

Stuffsack

oops

Guylines Ground loops and attachments The basic principle is the same with all our tents but Keb and Polar have larger loops for peg attachments. This makes it possible to slide a touring ski through the loops to give a stable and reliable anchor in deep snow.   Keb and Polar tents also have stronger straps and fasteners that are easier to handle in the winter.

All our tents have Dyneema guylines; lightweight, extremely strong and totally static. They have excellent stability and reduce the risk of vibrations leading to tent pegs releasing their hold in strong winds.     The guylines have an in-woven reflective thread and buckles that can be adjusted with one hand. Sturdier guylines and buckles on the Keb and Polar tents make them both stronger and easier to handle in winter conditions and with gloves on.

Compression bag The tent and poles are stored in seperate bags that are attached to become one unit.   This makes it easier to stay organised when you are pitching or packing up the tent. Splitting up the tent and poles saves space in the backpack as they can be packed in different places, and even distributed between different packs.

Repair-kit and spare parts All our tents include a repair-kit and some essential spare parts. After all, accidents do happen.   See the exact contents of the repair-kit on page 90.

Finding the right tent for you is a b alanced equation between weight, living area, favourite terrain and safety.

Gjende, Jotunheimen, Norway 16

Tunnel tent or dome tent? Abisko, Keb or Polar?

CHOOSING YOUR TENT In order to choose the right tent, it’s good to determine what your needs are.   Where and when will you use your tent?   How many people should it accommodate?    Do you need your private space or are you ok with squeezing in with others?   If you prioritize small, light packs you might choose lighter materials and a smaller living space. In more exposed conditions and snow, you might consider more robust materials and features that can be managed with thick gloves on. You are likely to also need more space, as your equipment will be bulkier.

The more space you want, the more weight you have to carry (if you’re not in a kayak). And more stability and durability will of course also add weight. But weight could be a small price to pay for the comfort of a larger sleeping- and living-area or for the extra safety a more stable tent provides in remote areas.   The Fjällräven tent collection is built on two basic tent constructions - Dome tents and Tunnel tents. Then we have divided our different models into three families - Abisko, Keb and Polar - to create a helpful distinction between their different features and purposes.

17

Dome tent Dome tents are self-supporting and less dependant on guylines and pegs. This makes them easy to move about until you find the perfect place and easier to pitch where tent pegs are difficult to use – on slickrock or sand, for example. Thanks to their dome-like shape, they are less sensitive to changing wind directions. They have two entrances and more headroom than tunnel tents, which adds comfort, but they have smaller vestibules. Dome tents are slightly heavier because they require more poles. Although they are self-supporting, you should always secure the tent to the ground (more on that on page 84).

18

Tunnel tent Tunnel tents have a great weight to space ratio. They are not self-supporting and need to be secured to the ground to be pitched. They have more spacious vestibules which divide the tent into one sleeping area and one area for storing equipment or preparing food in bad weather conditions. When aligned correctly, tunnel tents are extremely wind resistant. And when pitched in deep snow, the vestibule can be dug out to provide a space large enough to stand up in.

19

Abisko Weight saving designs if you want to carry less but retain a high level of strength in your tent. Broad area of use. Many excellent features for extra ventilation and scenic views in warmer climates, however, less suitable for very exposed winter conditions.

Keb Durable designs perfect if you appreciate “Extra Everything” regarding both strength and functionality for extra safety and comfort in challenging conditions. Polar Endurance 3

Polar The toughest of our tough. Developed for long expeditions in extremely challenging winter conditions. Superior strength and safety levels, and features specifically designed for winter expeditions in snowy or stormy winter conditions.

20

“ How important is low weight? How important is high endurance?” At a glance, our models in the Keb and Abisko families might look similar, but it is the details that determine which tent is the best choice for different conditions.  The Keb series is made for tougher conditions than Abisko but this does not mean that Keb tents are just for experienced adventurers on long trips or demanding winter conditions.  The Keb series could just as easily be the perfect choice for someone with less experience who wants good safety margins. Likewise, the Abisko series could be perfect for a super-experienced trekker who wants

to carry as little weight as possible and knows exactly how to find the right tent site, even in exposed areas.   The toughest of our tents is our Polar tent. It is an extra heavy-duty construction and will withstand the toughest use in the most demanding places on earth – like the Arctic for example.  The Polar tent is designed primarily for winter use, and it is full of professional details and out-of-the-box solutions.

When kayaking, the most appealing tent spots are often on a beach or on slickrock, where a dome tent is a good choice.

Choose a spot where you are protected from the wind and where rainwater does not gather. A comfortable distance to drinking water but not too close. And of course, make sure there's a great view to wake up to.

Kings Trail, Lapland, Sweden 66

Nothing beats waking up in nature after a good night sleep.

PRACTICAL TIPS ALONG THE WAY Start looking for a good spot to pitch your tent early on, well before it gets dark, and don’t hurry the process – allow a little time to find the perfect place to pitch your tent.   You will find that this will lead to a better night’s sleep. Be careful to use all the tent pegs and fasten all the guylines carefully and give them a final check before turning in for the night.   Protection from strong winds can be found where there are trees, rock faces or variations in the terrain. Select a flat and sheltered surface to pitch your tent on and remove any sharp objects from the ground

such as sticks and stones. Avoid wet ground, as well as dried up riverbeds or riverbanks as you never know if they will be covered with water if it rains heavily.   Don’t pitch your tent at the bottom of a dip in the terrain for the same reason, it may fill with water in heavy rain.   If you have the possibility of choosing a place with sandy or loose earth, do so as water often runs off better in such places if it starts to rain. Sand and loose earth can, however, require extra large tent pegs – snow/sand pegs – which are an accessory.

67

In warm climates

No-see-um mesh is a lightweight micro-mesh netting that keeps even the smallest insects at bay.

Photo taken through the No-see-um net.

68

In large areas of the world around the equator, tents are used in both wet and dry conditions. What these places have in common is the heat. Finding shade, creating shade or even using only the inner tent can make the heat comfortable instead of exhausting.   Shade is most easily created with a tarp that can be used in several ways depending on your needs and the possibilities of fastening it to objects around the tent. The combination of a tarp and just using the inner tent can be perfect if you want to protect yourself from the sun while enjoying the breeze.   Remember to regularly inspect the mosquito mesh in your tent when visiting malaria areas. Other types of insects and animals can also create problems of course so be careful to keep the inner tent completely closed and if possible to store food away from the tent.   One way to avoid snakes and spiders is to sweep the tent site clean and remove stones and other objects that they like to live under. Tenting in sand is similar in many ways to tenting in snow. Just like in snow, you will need special pegs to anchor the tent in place and just like in snow your greatest challenge will be strong winds.   The combination of wind, sand and sun for extended periods is trying for all types of outdoor equipment, especially tents. So when you are in sandy environments, you may want to spend some time occasionally cleaning the zippers from sand to reduce wear and avoid exposing the tent to strong sun for extended periods. That way you will help make your tent last even longer.

Stay cool in hot and humid conditions by pitching just the inner tent with a tarp suspended above for rain protection. Another alternative accessory is to use a mesh inner tent (an accessory)

In areas with poisonous spiders and insects, dig a 10cm deep ditch around the tent.

69

Tips 1. Make sure you have an extra ground sheet (see accessories on page 95) that covers the vestibule as well so you get less sand in the inner tent. It is a good idea to have a small brush to help get rid of the sand that does find its way in. 2. Nylon stretches and contracts

when temperature and humidity change. Make sure you adjust the tension in the guylines when the temperature and humidity differ a lot.

3. Just like we don’t eat crackers

in bed at home, don’t leave your sleeping bag open and unzipped when you go in and out of the tent in sandy environments.

4. If the tent feels damp after a few days in a tropical climate it could well need to spend a little time in the sun so it can dry out properly. 5. Pitching your tent on the beach is great, but take into account tides and the possibility of tsunamis caused by earthquakes. 6. If you are going to be travelling in a malaria area, take a separate mosquito net with you so you can create several mosquito-free zones other than the inner tent. 7. In areas with poisonous spiders

and insects, reduce the risk of them getting into the tent by digging a 10cm deep ditch around the tent, about one or two metres from it. Insects that can be troublesome often avoid crossing the ditch.   Never leave your equipment loose in the vestibule and always keep the inner tent closed. If you have the chance, hang your backpack from a rope suspended between two trees.

On snow

A tent for winter use should have a spacious vestibule and inner tent.

72

There are mixed feelings among outdoor people when it comes to sleeping in tents in the winter - some love it while others don’t. If you are one of those who have not quite decided yet, it may be good to know that with the right knowledge and a bit of practice, tenting in the snow is a fantastic experience.    Choose a site sheltered from the wind with a snow depth that is sufficient to anchor the tent properly.   Pack down the snow with skis or snowshoes and let it harden for about 15 minutes. Then pitch the tent as usual but use snow/ sand pegs instead of regular pegs. Finally, place snow along the side of the tent facing the wind to prevent snow being blown up between the inner tent and flysheet.   Make sure you anchor all ground loops and guylines properly. Snow can be tricky so it is a good idea to use as many anchoring points as possible to distribute the stresses when the wind picks up.   After the tent is in place, build a wind-blocking wall about a metre high shaped like an arrowhead with the point of the arrow pointing into the wind. This should be about three - five metres away from the tent. This will break strong winds and also block drifting snow so it won’t cover the tent.   When the tent is in place and the windbreak finished, dig a foot hole in the vestibule so you can comfortably sit at the edge of the inner tent with your feet in the vestibule. You can then crawl carefully into the inner tent onto a double layer of sleeping mats, lie down in your favourite sleeping position and shape the snow to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.   Make sure you practice this in safe and secure conditions, close to home or a mountain cabin, before venturing out into the wilderness.

Snow/sand pegs are used like regular tent pegs and can also be dug down horizontally as T-anchors. (see page 88)

73

Tips 1. In winter environments you will

be travelling with more equipment that will take up more room. Therefore, a tent for winter use should have a spacious vestibule and inner tent.   It is important that the ventilation system is designed to work from short end to short end and that you can close vents if snow is drifting.     There is always the risk that parts of the dug-out vestibule can be filled with drifting snow so don’t leave loose equipment there. Close all backpacks and bags properly.

2. For longer trips in the

Scandinavian wilderness you should always use double sets of poles in the pole sleeves. This gives extra stability – the combination of precipitation and wind are the greatest threats when it comes to a tent collapsing.

3. Avoid pitching your tent in steep ravines, at the base of steep snowcovered slopes or under cornices.   Avalanches are much more dangerous than wind and drifting snow, so don’t be afraid to choose a higher position that is perhaps less sheltered and where snowdrifts might build up around the tent. 4. Snow/sand pegs are used like

regular tent pegs and can also be dug down horizontally as T-anchors. Stamp them into the snow and stamp down the area around them and let this freeze for 15 minutes before tightening the guylines.

5. It is a good idea to use double sleeping mats in the winter, one in foam and one inflatable, with a pump. A self-inflating sleeping mat seldom inflates fully, especially in the winter.

75

Abisko View 2 anchored with T-anchors and rocks.

On slickrock The most beautiful tent sites can be found on smooth coastal rocks with perfect views of the sunset. With a few clever tips, this can be a dream place for dreaming.   When you tent on slickrock it is no problem keeping your gear organised as there is no vegetation around you and it is easy to keep everything clean. Even if there are both aesthetic and practical reasons to pitch your tent right next to the water on the rocks, it is also a good idea to be aware of the challenges that this involves.   For example, the pleasant evening sun could become the bright morning sun that makes it uncomfortably warm in your tent 76

and spoils your morning sleep. So it may be worthwhile to consider which direction the sun rises in and find a tent site that is in the shade in the morning. The evening breeze that helped keep the mosquitoes at bay can turn into a strong wind during the night so keep your equipment in order so it doesn't blow away. The sound of gentle waves that put you to sleep in the evening may wake you up at night if you are right by the water's edge. And if you camp near the open sea, keep in mind that the weather is not fully predictable and that larger waves can strike up unexpectedly.   If you plan to tent on slickrock often, then it is without a doubt that a self-supporting tent is preferable. The tent can then stand by itself and hold its form once you have the poles in place. You still need to anchor it to the ground with guylines but not with the same amount of carefulness as you need with a tent that is not self-supporting.   Pegs, both regular and those designed for snow or sand, are easily anchored in cracks in the rocks, but can also be kept in place with football-sized stones.   If you have regular tent pegs without pre attached lines, a bit of extra line attaching them to fixed guylines will save the fixed guylines from excessive wear from the rocks.   The nylon flysheet (that is used in all our new tents except Polar) gives a little in cold and humid conditions, such as on the coast or by a lake. It can be necessary to tighten guylines right before you go to bed to keep the flysheet taut so it doesn’t flap in the wind while you are trying to sleep.

Use thick inflatable sleeping mats on hard rock surfaces for extra comfort.

The most beautiful places can sometimes be the most exposed. Consider strong winds, waves and tides before pitching the tent.

77

Tips 1. Use stones that have already

been used by other adventurers before you if there are any. When you leave, leave your campsite as you found it. Or in even better shape.

2. It is extra comfortable with a

thick inflatable sleeping mat on a slickrock surface as it will be more forgiving than a regular sleeping mat on the extremely hard rock.

3. The most beautiful places can

sometimes be the most exposed. Think of strong winds, waves and tides and choose a tent site with safety margins.

4. Avoid pitching your tent in a

dip in the rocks that might fill with water if it starts to rain. On rocky surfaces, the rain does not drain away like it does on earth-covered surfaces.

5. Take extra guylines with you. Slickrock and sharp stones can wear out guylines quicker than usual. A bit of thin rubber hose is handy to thread over lines to protect them from unavoidable wear. 6. If you want to make your tent secure in stormy conditions, use cleats that are used for climbing.

78

Bönhamn, High Coast, Sweden.

“ Use thick inflatable sleeping mats on hard rock surfaces for extra comfort.”

79

A few more tips from over 50 years on the trails Tent site

Choose a tent site that is a bit away from streams and ponds. If you want to camp near a stream, keep in mind that the air is often raw and humid. Instead, choose a place 30-40 meters away, preferably a bit above the water.

Wind

Protection from strong winds can be found behind rocks, in the woods or among the shrubs and bushes.   On the other hand, in warm weather, a slight wind will help keep insects to a minimum and will help to ventilate the inside of the tent.

Tarp

Using a tarp can revolutionise your tent experience.   A tarp can provide shade when the sun is shining or keep you dry on a rainy day and if there is a group of you, the tarp can be used as a living room that is otherwise missing from a lightweight tent.   It is a good idea to take an extra line with you so you can elongate the tarp’s guylines.

Outdoor chair

On trips where you will be spending a lot of time in or around the tent it is incredibly comfortable to have an “outdoor chair” with you. This is a kind of stable but soft arrangement that looks like a chair without legs. You can get them ready made or you can buy versions that you use to convert your sleeping mat into a chair.

Repair kit

If you have an inflatable sleeping mat, don’t forget to take your puncture repair kit!

Gear Shelf

If you usually have trouble keeping your gear organised in the tent then it is a good idea to get a Gear Shelf. One of these can help you sort your gear and let you find things easily.

80

Bivvy shoes

Bivvy shoes are an amazing invention for winter treks, buy a pair or sew soles onto a cheap pair of down socks.

Pyjamas

Whatever the season is, it is comfortable to sleep in base layer clothing when you sleep in a sleeping bag.   Adjust your “pyjamas” according to the season and keep them in a separate bag during the day so they are always dry, whatever you get up to.

Cord

Whatever the season, it is always a great idea to have some extra rope with you.   This is probably the most useful thing you can have in your repair kit as it can be used for anything from repairing a backpack to extra shoelaces, but it is also perfect to use in the tent as an extra clothesline or rope to hang food from out of reach of rodents.

Toilet

Don't forget a pillow! Get one of our travel pillows or make your own. Take a pillowslip or a soft pack bag and stuff it with your down jacket to make a pillow.

Make sure that everyone you are with knows the basic rules of cooking and toileting: Fetch water up-steam, do the dishes and washing further down and pour out dish water into the ground next to the stream, not directly into the water. Make sure all toilet visits take place a good distance away from water.

Hot water

That little extra

Pillow

A bottle filled with hot water and placed inside a sock is a great source of heat inside your sleeping bag on cold nights. A fantastically comfortable tip! Or make a more permanent insulation solution with neoprene, you can buy them ready made.

Earplugs and eye mask

Earplugs are brilliant to block out the sound of the wind, rain, thunder or your trekking companion’s snoring. And an eye mask keeps early summer light at bay so you can sleep longer.

Head lamp

When there are several of you staying in the same tent, it is a great idea to keep a small flashlight in a pocket inside your sleeping bag so you don’t have to hunt through the whole tent in the middle of the night if you have to get up to go to the toilet.

Condensation cloth

A little cloth or rag can be used to wipe away condensation that sometimes builds up on the inside of the inner tent ceiling. That way, you won’t have to start the day by rolling up a wet sleeping bag.

Even if your aim is to travel as light as possible there is always room for “that little extra” that can sometimes make the world of difference on a trek. It might be a good book, a game or something really delicious to enjoy with dinner.

81

Handling & care As with most things in life, your tent needs to be looked after for it to last for a long time.   A wet tent that is packed away for a longer period risks getting damaged and smelling bad.   You should also make sure that no stones or twigs get packed away with your tent, as they can cause mechanical wear. Lines, both elastic and static, need checking as well.   Key words are clean, dry and dark when it comes to storage but even when you are outdoors with your tent it is important to care for it to avoid unnecessary damage.

Checking your tent at home Pitch your tent at home and check that all parts are included and in good working order before you leave for the wilderness.     Make this a routine so you never need to stand there in the middle of nowhere without your tent poles or pegs.   Make sure you pack the repair kit that is included with your tent (see page 90) but it’s a good idea to also pack some duct tape and a multitool. That way you’ll be all set to repair your tent in the field if you need to.

Pitching your tent Select a flat and sheltered surface to pitch your tent on and remove any sharp objects from the ground such as sticks and stones.   Place the tent according to the direction of the wind, with the main entrance facing

away from it. Secure the short end of the tent closest to the wind into place with two or three tent pegs.   Insert all the tent poles into the pole sleeves and then place the end of the poles into the foxfeet.   Stretch out the tent and secure it into place with more tent pegs. Adjust the tension of the tent fabric using the strap adjustments at the end of the poles.   Stretch out the guylines and anchor them into the ground.   A well-pitched tent is more stable than a poorly pitched tent and the flysheet and inner tent will flap less in the wind.   A tent that has been well adjusted with a taut flysheet has better ventilation and less chance of a pole breaking or fabric ripping.

Packing up your tent Remove any twigs and other items from the tent to reduce unnecessary wear of the tent fabric when it’s compressed in the bag. Adjust the guylines to their shortest length to reduce the risk of them getting tangled.   When you remove the tent poles, push them out instead of pulling them out. That way you won’t risk wearing out the elasticated cord inside the poles.   Packing the tent into the tent bag is done by simply pushing the tent fabric into the bag (no specific folding technique is needed). To facilitate this, the bag has a V-shaped opening.

Taking care of your tent Clean the tent fabric and zippers after use and keep the tent well aired and dry.   If it gets dirty, it is usually enough to rinse dirt off with warm water or wipe it off with a damp sponge. If needed, use mild soap or soap flakes. Never wash your tent in a washing machine and avoid strong chemical cleaning agents.   Zippers are often under a lot of stress and get a lot of wear, especially if you are using the tent in sandy or dusty environments.   To avoid having zipper problems, brush the zippers clean – a clean and dry toothbrush is perfect for the job.

Make it a habit to hang up, dry and air your tent after every trip. Hang it up with the poles in so air can circulate between the flysheet and the inner tent. This will prevent mould and bad aromas from developing.   The best way to store your tent is to hang it up in a well-ventilated, cool, dark and dry place. If you don’t have a suitable space for this and need to store your tent in its pack bag, make sure it is completely dry before you pack it away – this is very important!

Pitching a dome tent The crossed poles construction is what makes dome tents self-supporting, which in turn makes positioning a dome tent exactly where you want it easy.     Pitching procedures are the same for all Abisko Dome and Keb Dome tents. For Abisko View you’ll need tent pegs for the vestibule to take shape.

A. Place the tent on the ground and attach 2-3 pegs on the side facing into the wind, so the tent doesn’t blow away.

1.

Wind

Abisko View

B. Join all the connected pole

parts to create the three tent poles.    Insert them one by one through their sleeves using the colour markings and put the poles in the ’foxfeet’ holders when all three tent poles are in place.

2. If you are using only one set of poles, place them in the inner fittings of the foxfeet.

84

C. Raise the tent by placing the end

of the poles in the foxfeet.   Pull the strap adjustment at the pole holders to stretch the tent fabric.

D. Dome 2-3: Fasten the roof’s toggles in the rings around the whole roof. Apply tension if needed.

E. Attach the tent to the

ground and stretch it out by setting the pegs through the ground-loops.

3.

F. Anchor the guylines to the ground, then adjust them as needed.

4.

Packing up your tent 1. Wipe off dirt and condensation with a wet cloth. 2. Close all zippers. 3. Put the tent pegs in their bag, wipe off dirt from the pegs if needed.

Top view

Half-opened door

G. Open the ventilations, two on the bottom and one on the top, that helps to get rid of condensation.    The doors can be fastened in a half-opened position for extra ventilation without rain getting into the inner tent.   The zippers have an auto-lock function so that they won’t “creep” in strong winds.   If you want the doors to be fully opened, roll the fabric together and fasten it with the straps along the opening, to avoid stepping on the door.

4. Adjust the guylines to their shortest length to avoid tangling next time you take out the tent. 5. Release the strap

adjustments at the pole holders and release the poles.

6. Push the poles out from the pole sleeves. Do not pull as it can damage the tent and the poles. Fold them and put them in the pole bag.

7. Gently push the tent

into its bag. Folding is not needed.

85

Pitching a tunnel tent A well-pitched tunnel tent will perform the best. It has more stability and less slack material flapping in the wind for example.   It is therefore worth spending some time stretching the tent out and using all the ground loops and guylines to make the tent taut.   Tunnel tents are simple and quick to pitch even in strong winds. Since the inner tent is attached to the flysheet (as with all of our tents) everything is ready to go and is protected from rain while being pitched.

1.

A. Place the tent on the ground and attach 2-3 pegs on the short end facing into the wind, so the tent doesn’t blow away.

B. Connect the tent poles and insert all of them all the way through their sleeves folowing the colour marks but don’t put the poles in the holders "foxfeet" until they are all in place.

3.

D. Raise the tent by stretching out the opposite short side and putting in the tent pegs. Then secure all the other ground loops to the ground with pegs.

E. Lengthen the guylines and fasten them to the ground, then adjust their tension as needed. Packing up your tent 1. Wipe off dirt and condensation with a wet cloth. 2. Close all zippers

Using tent pegs Abisko tents have tent pegs that are 160 mm long and v-shaped. Keb tents have v-shaped tent pegs that are 200 mm long and wider, to give even better hold in difficult terrain and/or under heavy strain in hard winds.  Both Abisko and Keb tent pegs can be used horizontally as anchors in loose ground. In very loose ground like snow and sand, the tents can be complemented with a specific Snow/Sand Peg.

repair your tent out in the field Even well built tents can need to be repaired if you have bad luck.   You can get a rip in the tent fabric, a tent pole can break, or a zipper might fail if strained too much.   Everything is repairable, even out in the field, so you will always have shelter when you most need it.   All Fjällräven tents come with a repair kit (see opposite page). Note that the seam-sealer is unfortunately not included in the repair-kit as it is a perishable product. But we do recommend that you buy some if you are going on a longer trek.   In addition to the repair kit that comes with your tent, it’s also a good idea to carry a multi-tool with pliers and duct tape with you.

Guylines The easiest way to repair a broken guyline is to just tie it back together. But repeated repair in this way creates too many knots, in which case it is preferable to change the whole line. Always burn/melt the ends of the guyline with a match or a lighter so they won’t fray.

Tent pegs Tent pegs can get bent or disappear. If you have a bent peg, straighten it by stamping

on it when wearing boots, by hitting it with a large flat log or other object against a hard surface, or by bending it back into shape with the pliers on your multi-tool.   If you are missing a tent peg it can be replaced with a regular stick in some ground types. Remember to use a fresh, bendy stick rather than a dry brittle one.

Tent poles If a tent pole breaks you can replace the broken section with one of the reserve sections that comes with the tent and if you don’t have a reserve section you can use the repair tube.  a) Take off the aluminium plug at the end of the pole and untie the knot in the elastic cord. Separate the sections of the pole, remove them from the elastic cord and once you get to the damaged section replace it with the reserve section.     Pulling the elastic cord through the new pole section is tricky because the section is longer than the cord. But by sewing a thread through the end of the cord and using the needle as a weight, you can push the needle and thread through the pole section and then pull the elastic cord through.   Tie a new knot in the aluminium plug at the end of the cord and press it back into the top of the pole.

91

1.

2.

3.

Fix a broken tent pole segment 1. Release the broken pole segment. The repair tube covers all our pole dimensions. 2. Take away sharp edges from the broken ends and fix them together with duct tape 3. Slide the repair tube over the refract and fixate the ends with duct tape.

1.

2.

3.

Fix a rip in the fly sheet 1. Sew up the rip so that there are no gaps. Don't put the stitches too close to the edges. 2. Tighten the stitches and put silicone seam-sealer generously around the area. 3. Cut a generous piece from the spare flysheet fabric and glue it on. Then sew around the edges of the patch to secure it further. Seal the stitches with seam-sealer. Let dry.

92

b) If you don’t have a reserve section you can use the spare pole repair tube that is in every tent’s repair kit over the broken section of the pole (see opposite page).   Try to first shape the broken ends so they are as round and smooth as possible. This reduces the risk of the broken edges damaging the elastic cord inside and it is easier to slide the tube into place.   Then use a small piece of tape to hold the broken parts together.   Now slide the tube over the broken part and then tape it in place at both ends with duct tape.

Tent fabric and ground sheet A little leakage via the seams is perfectly normal for a tent, to make the tent 100 percent waterproof use the seam sealer that can be found in the repair kit.   If there is a rip in the tent fabric it has to be repaired immediately, otherwise the rip may get bigger in strong winds. It can be difficult to get tape to fasten to the silicon-treated surface of the flysheet, but in your repair-kit you’ll find a needle, thread and spare tent fabrics. You’ll also need seam-sealer which is not included in the repair-kit as it is a perishable product.   Firstly sew up the rip so that there are no gaps. Cut a generous piece from the spare flysheet fabric and glue it with seam sealer glue onto the outside of the tent, and then sew around the edges of the patch to secure it further. Seal the stitches with seam sealer. Let dry.   You will find a self-adhesive patch in the repair kit for the ground sheet. Cut a piece that is big enough to cover the rip, remove the protective backing and cover the rip on the inside of the ground sheet.

It is always a good idea to have a couple of metres of duct tape with you (rolled around the top of a trekking pole for example). So that if you need to mend a rip temporarily and quickly, you can use the tape on the inside and outside of the ripped section.

Zippers If a zipper breaks, the first job is to seal the open part with tape. Then sew the edges of the zipper together by stitching over it. A few stitches every ten centimetres is enough.   Hopefully the zipper will be partly usable as all tents have two-way zippers.   To replace the broken zipper, go to your local Fjällräven reseller when you get back home, and they will help you.

Fix a broken zipper (provisional) 1. Start by sealing the broken part of the zipper with tape. 2. Secure the tape with stitches every ten centimetres.

93

Accessories and extra parts Planning ahead is always a good idea. If you’re pitching on both hard and soft surfaces you might need different tent pegs. If the ground is extra wet or muddy, an extra footprint might be the solution. And in extremely hard winds or heavy snow, using double tent poles will be your safest bet.

Why do you need a tent? Is it for p rotection from adverse weather conditions up in the mountains? Or is it for waking up on warm summer mornings by the lake?   Do you need a dome tent or a tunnel tent?   What is the difference?   How important is low weight ? How important is high endurance?   How many people should it accommodate and for how long? How many years should the tent last? Does it matter how the tent was produced?   This is Fjällräven’s tent book. It will tell you everything you need to know to be able to choose a tent you can enjoy and trust for many years.
