We’ve been researching new manufacturing techniques, to be able to make lighter, yet robust and low-maintenance boots and shoes. As a result, we’re working more with

polymers and PU injection technology. This involves spraying liquid PU by means of a special 3D printer directly onto the uppers to form the reinforcing elements.

The HANWAG development department has also been busy, working hard on new fits. This has resulted in the new Natural Fit concept, as used on our new lightweight, low-cut

Tierra Low

model, the Tierra. Natural Fit provides exceptional comfort for travelling and everyday use. In fact, it’s so comfortable that it’s virtually a barefoot feeling.

With our new Brenner Wide GTX® trekking boot, made of robust, yet supple nubuck, we’ve decided to go for a particularly high cut. It’s designed to allow extra support on demanding treks or for hunting in rough terrain and it’s also ideal for use in marshes and bogs.

WELCOME For anyone heading for the heights, our mid-cut, Rockcategory Brenva GTX® boot is the perfect companion – lightweight, sturdy and with a climbing-specific design. It has a suede upper with textile inserts and we’ve positioned Badile Combi II GTX®

Our Belorado family also welcomes a new addition. The Pordoi GTX® combines the advantages of our Belorado models – lightweight fabric uppers and robust, high-grip soles – in a higher construction. This is why it’s in our Trek Pordoi GTX®

category. For anyone prefers natural materials, the Belorado Leder is a full-leather alternative to existing versions.

In addition, the Rotpunkt GTX® now also has a big brother. The Salt Rock is made over our StraightFit Last, has a new Belorado Low

design and a completely new sole. The retro styling remains unchanged, though. And last, but by no means least, come the Sendero Mid GTX® SURROUNDTM and the Sendero Low GTX® SURROUNDTM. They reinforce our GTX® SURROUNDTM range with two further lightweight models.

GORE-TEX® SURROUND™ TECHNOLOGY For cool, dry feet – all day long. This is the firsttime we are implementing GORE-TEX®’s SURROUND™ product technology. Our new Najera Mid GTX® SURROUND™ and Najera Low GTX® SURROUND™ are Trail & Travel models designed specifically for outdoor activities in moderate to warm regions. Najera Mid GTX® SURROUND™ As with all GORE-TEX® footwear, they are durably waterproof. Additionally, these models have a special breathable footbed and a layer, named spacer, which allows breathability under the sole. This and the open upper construction allow ventilation both at the sides and under the sole, that is to say a 360° breathability.

LAST SIZES We have been making high-quality mountaineering and trekking lasts for over 90 years and our footwear is renowned for its outstanding fit. The prerequisite for a comfortable fit is a good last (a type of artificial foot made of wood or plastic that lends the shoe its shape). First up, it naturally needs to be specific to either men’s or women’s feet. We shape our lasts according to the type of footwear they are to be used for (e.g. greater emphasis on comfort for our Trek and Trek Light models, narrower = greater climbing precision for our Rock models). In addition, we also have lasts for people, whose feet are not a standard shape or size. These are our special lasts:

Wide Last: Our wide last has a standard heel section, but is wider at the forefoot and ball of the foot. Our wide models are for people who find standard models too narrow. From Summer 2013 we have ten different models with a wide last.

Bunion Last: Many people – mainly women, but also boulderers and sport climbers – suffer from bunions and stiffness of the big toe joint. We make three models with our unique Bunion Last. It provides additional room around the big toe (for wearers with hallux valgus).

StraightFit Last: Our StraightFit Last is based on our Trekking Bunion-Last

Last, but provides more space for the toes and allows the big toe to assume a straighter position. We make three Trail and Travel models and three new Bio models using a StraightFit last.

CEMENTED CONSTRUCTION There are plenty of different ways to make boots and shoes. However, there are only two techniques that make them really robust and long-lasting: traditionally-handcrafted double stitching (see page 74) and cemented construction. We make all our footwear (with the exception of three Junior models) using one of these two techniques. The cemented construction is a complex and time-consuming method where the upper is moulded and stretched over the last and attached (lasted) to the insole to form a unit. Subsequently the midsole and outsole are added.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Footwear made with a cemented construction can be resoled as many times as necessary. This is good for the environment and saves you money.â&#x20AC;?

Advantages: Cemented construction footwear is particularly robust (and shape retentive) and, if properly looked after, will last a very long time. We are probably the only manufacturer in the world to make not just all our boots but also all our shoes with a cemented construction. The great advantage is that once the sole is worn down, it can simply be removed and resoled. Hanwag does this at its own premises in Vierkirchen. It is a popular service, after all these boots are perfectly worn in; people just do not want to replace them. In fact, they are often long-standing companions and the source of many happy memories.
