FIELDHOUSE PLAZA
FIELDHOUSE PLAZA
Project Type: Plaza Open Space
Fieldhouse Plaza proposes a dedicated space for outdoor engagement located adjacent to the community fieldhouse building. The area accomodates the use of events, activities, sports, outdoor dining, and rest.
The main goal for the design of this project is to project an outdoor recreational area that serves associative elements alongside the freshly built fieldhouse project. Our focus was to engage the public and visitors to activate the outdoor elements in all seasons. Promoting a communal space for all to access at anytime.
Team: REA | Patrick Stout, Project Manager | Francisco Zapata, Designer
The Fieldhouse Plaza is located just South to a newly constructed city streetscape, North to the newly constructed community Fieldhouse, and Eastbound to a new development including a brewery.
The North-west end of the community open plaza, highlights an outdoor eating area. The East end showcases the central communal recreational space that hosts a wide range of activities for the community. This includes a basketball court, an internal loop of activities such as cornhole, ping pong and building blocks, and also featuring a Rock climbing area with fall-rated artificial turf.
The site’s vision was to compliment the atmosphere of the fieldhouse community building through an outdoor setting. The plaza focuses on generating opportunities for outdoor activities for any seasonal use.
Our pursuit was to create a place for all ages to enjoy themselves. Community engagement was a high priority for the client and our goals were to demonstrate a design that has no limit to the amount of activities one can engage with.
The design focuses on generating accessibility to the entire community. Working with grading we implemented two entrances to create ease of accessibility transcending ada requirements.
Creating lots of seating opportunities throughout the site was also a major component to the design as to not hinder the accessibility to engage with all age ranges.
Market Street
Project Type: Urban Design
Market Street Project initiates design for phase two on Eastern Market Street after completion of construction of phase one on West Market Street.
The project initiatives call for an external corridor connecting the Capitol Government Building on to the East and Monument Circle on the West. Our focus was to create opportunities for sustainability and improving mobility and accessibility throughout the site.
Team: REA | Alan Rosenwinkel, Project Manager | Francisco Zapata, Designer
Market Street will implement green infrastructure elements. Including Bioswales, Rain Gardens, and Plant Beds. Some challenges that were faced were underground vault systems that are already in place limiting the placement of street trees.
Market Street is a main urban street plaza that is adjacent to two main mobility corridors on one way streets on both ends. The East occupys a two way dedicated transit system and the West occupies a bycicle trail running North South.
Market Street is a central urban municipal project which will feature a unique urban design style than typical aspahlt pavement. The streetscape features both decorative and eco-friendly design elements. Using a brick pavers allows for us to use typical streetscape features and add color through paver pattern. The site demonstrates connectivity to other planning initiatives of designated bus transit corridors along with a bicycle streetscape corridor.
Accessibility is essential in municipal areas and creating those opportunities in areas as simple as street parking allows for greater accessibililty.
The West end also showcases an elevated surface to reach flush grade at the crosswalk intersection. (shown in graphic B)
Market Street Phase Two incorporates two rain gardens one on both the East and West ends on opposing ends in order to capture and filter stormwater systems.
Dedicated Bicycle lanes using paver markers to indicate the separation to traffic. Paver system allows for ease of indication by implementing a separate color without the common issues of constant maintenance when using painted asphalt.
Pearl Madison Park
Project Type: Riverside Park
Pearl Madison Park is is a riverside park project which allows community access to the river.
The projects vision was to create better accessibility to the river which had limited paths which were nowhere near the river itself. Combining elements of nature with accessibility and play were the leading design goals.

The project location connects the public to nature, so creating opportunities for accessibility, elements of play and exploration are essential to activate the open areas of the park. The central lawn allows for community events while creating views and direct access to the river using limestone steps to drive engagement to the river. The South-east end of the site creates opportunities for play and an amphitheater embedded under the tree line for community concerts.
VETERAN COUNTY MEMORIAL
Project Type: Memorial Park | Municipal
Veteran County Memorial is a municipal project that initiates the design of the first county park project for the county as a whole.
The intention for the memorial was to generate access from the library building just North to the space as well as generate views from the newly constructed streetscape project to the south. The project welcomes the community to engage the space using 6 blocks in memory each branch of the military and a central obelisk in honoring all who served our country.

Concept Inspiration
The design concept settled with the illustration that combine a Winged Rank insignia.
the client selecting our concept Winged Military Service Star to a Chevron Eastern Grade Change + Seating East bound entrance created a significant grade change led to the use of elongated flared pathways, and impacted the use seating space in that area.
The Veteran County Memorial design includes two site access points with an elongated path accented with paver bands that will use memorial brick pavers that honor the names of fallen veterans alongside memorial trees. The path leads towards the central features showcasing an obelisk and 6 branch tablets for each branch of the military.
A screen of evergreen trees surround the site which help highlight the focal components of the design.
