FLAD-UAc Mobility Fund “Crossing the Atlantic” A program supporting the mobility of students & researchers between the Universidade dos Açores and US institutions FLAD-UAc/2018/2nd CALL

I – Purpose of the Call The current request for proposals (RFP) seeks applications within the guidelines of the FLAD-UAc Crossing the Atlantic Fund, which was created through a protocol signed between the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) and the University of the Azores (UAc) on 24 February, 2015.

II – Applicable Regulations The specific terms of the current RFP are found in the document Regulations governing the attribution of financial support for projects submitted within the ambit of the FLAD-UAc Crossing the Atlantic Fund, which was an integral part of the protocol signed between the two parties. It is available in Portuguese here: http://doit.uac.pt/doit/store/temp/2015312/87576_RegulamentoCrossingtheatlantic.pdf and in English here: http://issuu.com/fladpublish/docs/flad_uac_regulations_en/1?e=0/12938449

III – Dates of the RFP 1. Project proposals will be open between 17 September and 21 October 2018. 2. Applicants will receive the evaluation results by 1 November 2018. 3. Projects funded under this call must start mobility before 30 June 2019.

IV – Eligibility 1. Applicants must be: a) faculty/researchers of the UAc or faculty/researchers from US institutions, specifically universities and/or research centers; b) students from the UAc or from US schools, under the responsibility of a faculty member or Principle Investigator (PI). 2. When the application involves a mobility proposal of students from the USA to the Azores in a “faculty-led study abroad” type program, applications will only be considered if they use FLAD’s designated program for that type of activities, the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN).

V - Applications 1. The application must be completed online using the appropriate form. 2. In the case of applicants coming from the UAc, the application must be submitted in Portuguese through the University’s portal, using the following link: http://portaldeservicos.uac.pt/doit/servicos.aspid_dep=21&id_form=174 3. In the case of applicants coming from US institutions, the application must be submitted through this portal in English: https://si.flad.pt/initapplication.do?language=en_GB 4. The application is submitted by the Principle Investigator (PI).

5. Any applications that involve faculty-led study abroad programs must include a detailed program and budget previously developed by the PI and the program partner. It is understood that student recruitment numbers are always just an estimate at the date of proposal submission.

VI – Evaluation 1. The evaluation of proposals will follow the criteria laid out in the Regulations mentioned above in Point II. 2. Preference will be given to applications that include students’ mobility. 3. Faculty-led study abroad programs at the UAc that receive ECTS credits paid to the UAc will be given priority over faculty-led study tours that only receive credits from US institutions. 4. Preference will not be given to applications for presentations at conferences, since FLAD has a specific program for that kind of request. The description of FLAD’s USA@PT program can be found here: http://www.flad.pt/en/usapt-grants-2018/

VII – Financing 1. No project will receive more than 20.000€. 2. The awards granted to each project may not cover the full amount requested. 3. Requests to Crossing the Atlantic may be combined with other sources of grant support. Such forms of cofinancing are positively evaluated by the jury. 4. Awards related to study abroad programs that involve unknown student recruitment numbers at time of proposal submission will be given a maximum and minimum award figure at time of grant notification, such that all incentives for student recruitment are known as early as possible. 5. However, the final grant amount will only take place once final recruitment numbers are known and will be based on a per student award amount + the eligible expenses of the accompanying PI.
