In Celebration of Women

Second Annual Fundraiser

May 12, 2016 Flagler College Saint Augustine, Florida

A Message from the Chair of the Women of Vision Advisory Board Mission

The mission of the Women of Vision Fund is to provide scholarships and opportunities for women who attend Flagler College, to engage women at special Flagler College events, and to establish strong ties and connections with women to Flagler College, our exceptional students, and our extraordinary campus. A goal of the Women of Vision Fund is to teach both donors and scholarship recipients that paying it forward is a way of life and has a positive impact on the College, the community, and the nation at large. Young women who attend Flagler College will be empowered to make a difference by both receiving and giving. Opportunities afforded the Women of Vision scholarship recipients at Flagler College shape their lives to be the next generation of leaders.

May 12, 2016

Vision

Our vision for the Women of Vision Fund is to create educational and leadership opportunities for women at Flagler College. We seek to harness the collective power of women to raise money for a significant endowment fund, as well as an operational revenue source to generate funding for scholarships and educational opportunities for women at Flagler College.

You Can Help

Big or small, your contribution to the Women of Vision Fund is an investment in talented, deserving young women who attend Flagler College. Your gift helps them to achieve, to compete, to realize their dreams and, someday, to help and inspire others. Ninety percent of Flagler students receive financial assistance, and there has been a significant rise in the number of students with financial need. While institutional aid for female students has increased, the number needing financial aid remains higher than the total amount of aid available. Your gift makes a difference at Flagler. Every gift counts.

THE SEED WAS PLANTED

Flagler College’s heritage is closely linked with the history of Florida through the life of Henry Morrison Flagler, oil magnate, railroad pioneer and land developer. The College was founded in l968 by Lawrence Lewis, one of Flagler’s principal heirs, as a small, private college for women and opened its doors to 160 female students. In l971, it officially became a coeducational institution, and in l972 graduated its first class of 34, of whom 31 were women. Today, sixty percent of the 2,500+ Flagler students are women. The establishment of a women’s fund at Flagler College was another step in expanding and strengthening the support of Flagler College well into the future. A graduate of the first class, Dr. Beverly Copeland Carmichael worked with Robin Cooper, Chair, to spearhead the effort to launch the Women of Vision Fund and to organize the Advisory Board, comprised of community volunteers. It was their vision that a substantial endowment fund be established to provide scholarships for accomplished female students in need of financial assistance. Such a fund is a legacy gift which continues to give, year after year.

Greetings to all and welcome to the second annual Power of the Purse®. We have come a very long way from the time when the Women of Vision Fund and Advisory Board were merely ideas. Our inaugural fundraiser, the 2015 Power of the Purse® luncheon, was a tremendous success, and I deeply appreciate the members of the founding Advisory Board who came together and worked hard to make it happen. I’ll never forget the experience of looking out at that gathering of 340 women, assembled for the purpose of raising money for deserving Flagler College students. It was inspiring to see how women truly support each other. Throughout my nursing career, I have promoted the concept of women helping women, and I remain dedicated to that cause, now through the Women of Vision Advisory Board. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of female students needing financial aid -- to help them realize their potential and achieve their dreams. Thanks to all of you who have participated in this second annual event. I especially appreciate your generosity and hope that you will enjoy our program. Sincerely,

Robin Cooper Chair, Women of Vision Advisory Board

Welcome to the Second Annual Power of the Purse® luncheon, and thank you for participating in the Women of Vision Advisory Board’s premier fundraising event at Flagler College. Every day as I work with businesses and individuals, I am touched by the generosity and kind hearts of the people in the St. Augustine and surrounding communities. As you and I count our blessings and respect the wonder of what each new day may bring, what can we do to ensure others’ blessings are deep, rich and solid? You are already doing it just by being here today! All of you here have shared by giving of your time, your talent, and your treasure. I salute Dr. Beverly Carmichael and Robin Cooper for their vision in establishing the Women of Vision Fund for deserving female students at Flagler College, and appreciate their leadership and guidance in these formative years. Thank you to our Sponsors and their generosity, the Women of Vision Advisory Board, the Committee Chairs and their entire teams who have worked tirelessly to create this remarkable and memorable day. As many of you know, these events do not come off without extraordinary efforts, and these women have done an exceptional job. Enjoy the day and thank you for helping outstanding and deserving female students at Flagler College pursue their dreams and goals for their education and their future!

Keynote Speaker Prissy Elrod Prissy Elrod is a professional speaker, artist, humorist and the published author of Far Outside the Ordinary, a memoir. She was born and raised in Lake City, Florida and now lives in Tallahassee with her husband Dale. She began her college education when she entered the inaugural class of Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. Subsequently she attended Florida State University where she ended her formal education and earned her Master’s Degree. Far Outside the Ordinary has been described by some as Steel Magnolia meets The Help. Since the book was released, it has been profiled in multiple Florida and Georgia newspapers. Bloggers from California to New York have reviewed and shared the book with their readers and Prissy has personally spoken, or skyped, with over one hundred book clubs throughout the country. While Prissy continues to work on the sequel to Far Outside the Ordinary, she has released three Far Outside the Ordinary coloring books for adults. The award-winning image on the cover of the book and the Far Outside the Ordinary title have been branded. She now has other products available capturing the popular butterfly image with the caterpillar nested within.

Joan Andrew

Joan Carol Andrew, affectionately known to her family as “Johnnie,” was born in St. Augustine, Florida on January 11, 1944. She attended local schools, married a Minorcan, and lived in St. Augustine all of her life. For the first 20 years of her marriage, Joan was the typical homemaker – a gourmet cook, excellent seamstress, mother to her two daughters, volunteer, garden club member, and caregiver to her mother. She also assisted her husband in the family owned grocery store. Joan eventually went to work outside the home. Working in the center of town at the Christmas Shop, she developed lasting friendships with many of the employees in the historical area. Her knowledge of St. Augustine enabled her to be a real ambassador with tourists. Always an active member of Anastasia Baptist Church, she was eventually hired to coordinate the children’s ministry. Supervising the day care center, coordinating the Sunday School staff, and other spiritual programs provided Joan the opportunity to be mentor to hundreds of children and adults. After retiring from Anastasia Baptist Church and relaxing for about one year, Joan joined the staff of the Council on Aging. She switched her focus from the young to the old. As the coordinator at the Trout Creek Center, she organized programs and activities to guide the elder patrons to an active life. Then Joan retired again but returned to work at the St. Johns Family Funeral Home. Her strong faith and compassion made her a competent funeral planner. Joan’s life was characterized by service to her family, her church, and the community as a whole. She was a master at organizing events and giving back. As an active member of the St. Augustine Garden Club and president of the Dianthus Garden Circle, she worked tirelessly each year on the Christmas Tour of Homes. Joan inspired her fellow garden club members to excel in all their endeavors and to do so cheerfully!

Marianne Brinkhoff

Our friend, Marianne Brinkhoff, was a native of St. Augustine who loved the Oldest City with a passion. She attended local schools, graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy and married Fred Brinkhoff, her high school sweetheart. Their 57-year marriage lasted until she passed away on November 17, 2015. Marianne was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She felt a strong responsibility to “give back” to her community, working with many organizations including the Council on Aging, Community Hospice, the United Way, the Woman’s Exchange and our own Camellia Garden Club, serving as President for several years. In addition, Marianne had a long and successful career in banking as a teller for the revered Exchange Bank, remaining with the institution as it experienced many mergers, acquisitions and name changes. She was a constant – the smiling face that greeted customers, handled their banking and made them feel that all was still well. In the late Sixties, Marianne was chosen to portray Queen Mariana of the Royal Family of Spain at the Easter Festival. Later, when Fred served as mayor of St. Augustine, she was the gracious and savvy First Lady. No matter what she did, Marianne made everyone feel special. She was known for her generosity, compassion and fabulous cooking, which she saw as an expression of love. In her words, “Life is what you make of it…I think I’ll make a pound cake!” We miss you very much, Marianne.

Marian Burkhardt

Katie Caccavale

Today I honor Marian Burkhardt, my mother-in-law, who is a very special person in my life, and a woman who epitomizes courage and strength. Born and educated in St. Louis, MO, Marian always cheered for her home team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and later in life became an avid Gator fan after she married and moved to Florida. She and her husband, Brookes, were raising their growing family, settling into a new home, and establishing a local business in St. Augustine when Marian had to endure the devastating loss of her beloved husband and devoted father to their eight children. Through personal sacrifice, her strong faith and a lot of courage, not only did she raise her children to be responsible, respectful adults, she also had the vision to keep and protect the legacy her husband had started, the local family business. Today, Marian still goes into her office and is proud to see her sons carrying on the legacy of the family business, and how it has grown and thrived. Marian is an amazing inspiration and mentor to her many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We pay tribute to Katie Caccavale, a hardworking, remarkable young lady who has been an invaluable asset to the Women of Vision Advisory Board and the Power of the Purse® fundraisers, as well as Flagler College. Katie is a 2014 Flagler College graduate, and it seems she hit the ground running upon graduation and hasn’t stopped.

I salute you and admire you, Mom, for your outstanding perseverance in the face of adversity. Thank you for teaching me the importance of love of family, faith, patriotism, and perseverance. Only a strong woman can have such confidence in her convictions! I especially thank you for the best gift you could ever give me and that’s your oldest son, my husband, Brookes.

It has been fun getting to know you, Justin, and your fur children, Grayson and Kingsley. You are a joy to work with professionally and to know as a friend. You are smart, friendly, and overall a delightful young woman. We are very fortunate to have you on our team and we know you will achieve great things in your life!

With love and admiration,

In friendship and appreciation,

Cathy Bissett Burkhardt

Robin Cooper and Cathy Burkhardt

From the moment we met Katie, when she was busy with graduation and planning her own wedding, she has been a pleasure to work with on many levels, and her positive energy keeps us constantly moving forward. Katie, we appreciate all the time you have put into planning events, organizing meetings, and managing the Board. You have done an excellent job and have done it all with a smile on your face and professional demeanor even if things got stressful. We are all extremely grateful for your dedication to this group, and we couldn’t have achieved everything without your help.

Angela M. Cox

June Blair Hall

We honor today Angela M. Cox, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, in her 97th year.

Our mother was born on June 28th, 1916, and spent most of her early years roaming the hills of Virginia where she lived with her grandparents who instilled in her a great sense of kindness and caring of her fellow man that she carried the rest of her life. She eventually met and married Raymond Hall, “the handsomest man I had ever seen,” moved to Bristol, Tennessee and raised five children. Some of her most memorable years were spent living on a large piece of land on Boone Lake where the neighboring children were welcome to join in our summer activities of swimming, skiing and outdoor picnics. Mama cooked our fresh garden vegetables, made pies from our peach and apple trees, washed clothes using a ringer washer, rinsed them in the bathtub and hung them on the line to dry – even in winter! She also made most of our clothes using the old Singer foot-peddled sewing machine. I don’t recall ever hearing her complain. Her standard words of wisdom to us were “be good,” “take two aspirin,” and “hang in there.” Mama loved to dance and even in her 90’s could be found “cutting the rug.”

She came to St. Augustine in 1946 from East Hartford, Connecticut, and married her high school sweetheart, J. Edward “Red” Cox, a World War II veteran. She successfully blended family and community service with hobbies and work. Mama was St. Johns County’s American Red Cross Chapter executive, 19671981, when late-night calls from the police to help stranded military families were frequent. She “wore” her uniform, 24/7. She first joined the Red Cross stateside before WWII. During the war, she was a fulltime with the Red Cross providing psychiatric social services to hospitalized soldiers in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Guam and Saipan. As a Para-Nurse in Connecticut, she parachuted onto rugged terrain for a rescue, and other times, helped accident victims. It prepared her for her Red Cross career which later also included being our Council on Aging’s first executive director. At various times, she was president of the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, the Woman’s Exchange of St. Augustine, the Cathedral Parish Altar Guild, and the Azalea Garden Club; a Blue Bird Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and a 4-H parent volunteer. She made time, too, for bridge, tennis and golf. Mama taught us to put God first, be loyal to family, help others, stand on our own two feet, and laugh a lot. Her example has shaped our lives.

Margo C. Pope, Miriam Cox Roberson and Michael “Reddy” Cox 26

After moving to St. Augustine in 1964, Mama secured her very first “real job” at age 50 as gift shop manager for Zorayda Castle where she remained for 25 years. She only retired because of failing eyesight. Mama passed away just a year and a half ago at the age of 98. Since this year would have been her 100th birthday, we, her children, would like to thank her for teaching us patience and compassion, faith in God and showing us more love than we could ever use up. In her own words, “I’ve had a wonderful life.”

Dr. Mattie Hart

Dr. Mattie Hart has been one of the most inspiring educators for me both as a student, and now as a teacher, some twenty five plus years later! She always brought to her classes a wonderful balance of academic scrutiny, curiosity, and engagement that forced her students to both critically engage the subject matter and to be able to defend our reached positions, whatever that might be. When I arrived at Flagler College I was a typical kid just trying to get by in my classes. Thanks to Dr. Hart, and a few of the other wonderful teachers at Flagler, I graduated as a life-long learner who decided to pursue graduate school, and eventually to make teaching a career! Thanks, Dr. Hart! [Dr. Mattie Hart is retired Professor of Religion, Flagler College.]

Delores Lastinger

It takes a woman with vision to support new ideas and the concept of a Women of Vision Fund at Flagler College. Long before it was established and before its first advisory board meeting, Delores Lastinger had the insight to do just that: support the start-up of the Women of Vision. She liked the idea of harnessing the collective power of women to help other women, and she supported the effort behind the scenes with her counsel and encouragement. Delores also made an indelible impact upon Flagler College as an Executive Committee member of the Flagler College Board of Trustees. For nine years as a Trustee, she was an inspiration to others– both men and women. Delores thoughtfully and quietly helps those in need throughout the community. When asked, her advice to others is to pick what you are passionate about and get involved. Those who know her are continually inspired by her devotion to education and her ability to make a difference – through her leadership, her understanding of what needs to be done, and her ability to accomplish her mission. We marvel at her poised, effective, and kind manner as she affects needed change. She would likely deny the ripple effects of her influence; however, she has had an indelible, positive impact upon others while she makes the world a better place. You are an exemplary visionary, Delores. We thank you.

Florence Powers

Nancy Walk

Florence Powers has been an active, motivating force in the Garden Club of St. Augustine for over 50 years. In her roles as Garden Club President and Master Flower Show Judge, she has been an inspiration to new members.

Over the last 29 years, Nancy has brought constant adventure to our lives. Whether stepping way outside our comfort zones by rappelling 75 feet down to underground water-filled caves in Spain, mountain climbing 12,000 feet in Peru, braving 31 foot waves through the Drake Passage to get to Antarctica or running off the side of a cliff (also less dramatically known as paragliding) in Switzerland – life is FAR more exciting with Nancy in it.

Florence is an award-winning floral designer. Her designs using the spectacular birds-of-paradise from her garden have won many top flower show awards. She is always willing to help wherever needed and continues to be a valued asset of the Garden Club of St. Augustine. For many years, Florence has given tirelessly of her time and expertise not only to the GCSA but also to the Easter Festival and the “Royal Family.” She has been a role model to young and old and we are proud to honor her in this way.

Garden Club of St. Augustine

Nancy pushes us to be the best version of ourselves, to explore our limits and to keep going. Her dedication to Flagler began by hosting the first New York Alumni Chapter event back in 1987. Since then Nancy has also opened our home to host a huge Orlando Alumni Chapter event at our family horse farm and even recently incorporated Mitchell’s love of Flagler College into an elegantly planned musical birthday bash at the Solarium. Nancy’s work with many charitable organizations and love for animals have been guiding principles for our family, and her leadership in both business and with non-profits has been a lesson for all of us. We can’t thank you enough for guiding our family, for making us laugh, and for always being the one to spearhead an adventure. Love,

Mitch and Cymbre

What is the Women of Vision Fund of Flagler College? As scholarships are powerful catalysts for transforming lives of college students, the Women of Vision Fund of Flagler College was founded to establish scholarships and educational opportunities for exceptional female students at Flagler College.

How does the Women of Vision Fund Advisory Board of Directors work?

Frequently Asked Questions

A group of community volunteers serve as members of the Women of Vision Fund Advisory Board of Directors, which is advisory to Flagler College, administered by the Office of Institutional Advancement, and serves to advance the mission of the Women of Vision Fund. It was formed in August 2014 and officially founded on September 25, 2014. The Women of Vision Fund Advisory Board oversees the business and activities of the Fund, and plans, executes, and evaluates an annual fundraising plan to raise money for the Fund.

What is the goal of the Women of Vision Fund? The goal is to harness the collective power of women to raise money for a significant endowment fund, as well as an operational revenue source to generate funding for scholarships and educational opportunities for exceptional female students at Flagler College.

What is a scholarship endowment fund and how does it work? A scholarship endowment fund is a fund created specifically for scholarships and only the income earned from the fund can be spent (not the principal). The minimum amount to establish a scholarship endowment fund at Flagler College is $25,000. Scholarship awards are not made until the fund is fully endowed and has time to realize earnings (typically one year). Currently, the spending policy is 4% of the endowment’s spendable base. Endowed scholarships provide a lasting legacy and benefit students well into the future.

How many Women of Vision Scholarships? In 2015, the Women of Vision Advisory Board voted unanimously to invest $25,000 from money raised at its inaugural fundraiser, the 2015 Power of the PurseÂŽ, to establish the Women of Vision Endowed Scholarship. After its first year of investment, the fund will realize earnings and a scholarship of $1,000 (4% spending rate) will be awarded to a scholarship recipient for the 2017-18 academic year. During its founding year, the Women of Vision Advisory Board established two $2,500 annual scholarships which were awarded to two outstanding female students for the 2015-16 academic year. In February 2016, the Advisory Board voted to add a third $2,500 annual scholarship. Three Women of Vision annual scholarships will be awarded for the 2016-17 academic year. Each year, the Advisory Board will assess its fund balance and determine scholarship amounts, with the goal to build the endowment fund and to increase the number and amount of scholarships.

39

Why target female students? There has been a steady increase in the need for financial aid for Flagler students. This increasing need is also a nationwide trend. Ninety percent of Flagler students receive some form of financial aid or scholarships, and the need is mounting. Female students comprise over sixty percent of the student population. In keeping with the mission of women helping women, the Advisory Board determined that the Fund will provide scholarships for female students.

Who selects the scholarship recipients? A scholarship committee was established by the Advisory Board and is chaired by the Vice President of Enrollment Management, Deborah Thompson, and comprised of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Dr. Beverly Carmichael, and three Advisory Board members. The Committee established criteria for scholarship eligibility which was approved by the full Advisory Board. This year, 49 students applied for the three scholarships of $2,500 each, and three recipients were selected by the Committee. With a focus on student achievement and “paying it forward,” the selection process requires the applications to be submitted, complete with a brief essay describing campus involvement or community service/ engagement and details about future career plans.

Is the Women of Vision Fund the only one of its kind? No. Women’s funds are a growing national movement. Over 160 womenoriented funds have been created and span 30 countries. Most women’s funds benefit women and girls in local communities; however, the mission of the Women of Vision Fund of Flagler College is geared to benefit Flagler College female students through scholarships.

How did this Women of Vision Fund receive trademark permission to use the Power of the Purse® name and concept? Application was made and fee submitted to the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to obtain permission to use the name, Power of the Purse®. The term “Power of the Purse®” is a federally registered trademark of The Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee with the U.S. Patent and trademark Office, Registration No. 3,057,003.

How can I make a gift to the Women of Vision Fund of Flagler College? All gifts, large and small, are needed and welcome. Credit card gifts can be made online by visiting www.flagler.edu/wov and clicking “Make a Gift.” Simply select “Other” and note “Women of Vision. “Checks can be made payable to Women of Vision of Flagler College. Envelopes are on the tables at today’s Power of the Purse® for your convenience. Gifts can be made over time, if preferred, and questions can be directed to Katie Caccavale at Kcaccavale@flagler.edu or by calling the Office of Institutional Advancement 904-819-6437.
