SCHOLARSHIPS

Investing IN TOMORROW’S LEADERS

THE

impact OF A SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships make a profound difference in the lives of students. Scholarships: • Lessen the financial burden for students and their families • Decrease the number and amount of loans students need to complete their college education • Provide opportunities for students who otherwise could not afford to attend Flagler College • Allow students the freedom to explore interests beyond the classroom • Reward excellence as students pursue their education and careers • Help students to focus on their studies and to pursue research, internships, and independent work

A CRITICAL Challenge

Today, 2,500 students attend Flagler College. They are tomorrow’s leaders. But they need help today. Ninety-Three percent of Flagler students need and receive some form of financial aid, and student need continues to increase each year. Currently, only 9% of the student body receives financial assistance from a named scholarship. For every endowed scholarship, there are many qualified applicants. Over the last 50 years, a community of dedicated donors has made an impact on thousands of students through establishing endowed scholarship funds. Today, 130 endowed scholarships make a difference in the lives of Flagler students. However, there is a critical need for more endowed scholarships that will reward hard work and recognize student potential through financial aid.

Establish A SCHOLARSHIP Creating an endowed scholarship is a meaningful way to provide lasting benefits to Flagler students and to establish a legacy in honor of a family member, mentor, faculty member, or person of significance. The naming of a scholarship is very personal, and donors find providing opportunities for students through a scholarship a meaningful and gratifying experience. A minimum investment of $25,000 is required to establish an endowed scholarship fund; there is no maximum investment. A donor may take five years to build a scholarship to the endowed level; however, no awards will be made until the fund is fully endowed (balance reaches $25,000) and the fund has time to realize earnings (typically one to two years). Currently, scholarship awards are based on an annual rate of 4.0% of the endowment’s spendable base. Scholarship donors may help develop the selection criteria for their endowed fund, and recipients will be chosen by the Flagler College Financial Aid Office based on this criteria.
