Flagler Museum Annual Report 2014

President’s Letter June 2015

Dear Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors: On behalf of all the Museum's Trustees and Staff, thank you very much for your support throughout 2014. We hope you enjoy reading this summary of all that was made possible through your generous support. General attendance, program attendance, and website visitation, all increased during 2014. Indeed, the Museum’s programs were sold out during the year. The Museum’s exhibitions were both critical and popular successes, as were both the Music Series concerts and the Annual Bluegrass concert. The Museum’s many children’s programs, both onsite and in the schools, helped bring Florida history to life for thousands of children. The Trustees and Staff of the Museum are extremely pleased with the many accomplishments and broad support received this past year. Thank you for your support, which continues to be so critical to making the Museum's many excellent programs possible.

Sincerely,

George G. Matthews, President Flagler Museum Board of Trustees

The Mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to restore and preserve Whitehall and its collections, and to research and interpret materials related to the life of Henry Flagler, as unique and important elements of Florida’s history and America’s Gilded Age.

Winter Exhibition: Stories in Sterling The Museum's winter exhibition, “Stories in Sterling: Four Centuries of Silver in New York", organized by the New-York Historical Society, was one of the Flagler Museum's most popular exhibitions. The exhibition interpreted nearly 200 compelling works in silver in their cultural context. The exhibition was enriched with a selection of paintings, prints, photographs, manuscripts, and other items that furthered the understanding of the objects and brought to life the individuals who acquired them.

FAll Exhibition: Kiss of the Oceans The Museum’s fall exhibition, “Kiss of the Oceans: The Meeting of the Atlantic and the Pacific,” was organized by the Flagler Museum’s curatorial staff in commemoration of the centennial of the Panama Canal. The exhibition illustrated the fascinating history leading up to, and the story

of the construction of, one of the world’s great technological achievements. The exhibition also shed light on the relevance of the Canal project to Florida and its influence on Flagler’s decision to take on the construction of the Over-Sea Railroad.

History Room During the summer, one of the most popular stops in the Museum, the History Room exhibit, was completely redesigned and reinstalled. A new exhibition that provides expanded information about Henry and Mary Lily Flagler, their families, life at Whitehall, Flagler's businesses and Henry Flagler's extraordinary legacy.

The many items on display in the History Room provide additional information about the life and legacy of Henry Flagler.

Programs and Member Events Each year the Museum is visited by tens of thousands of people from around the world who come to enjoy the Museum's most popular program, the interpretation of Whitehall, Flagler’s tremendous legacy, and the Gilded Age. And, each visitor can choose for him or herself whether they prefer a docent-led tour, an audio tour in one of four languages, or a printed self-guided tour in one of four languages.

Holiday Evening Tours, the Whitehall Lecture Series, gallery talks, special lectures, the Flagler Museum Music Series, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and more.

In addition to the year round tour program, the Museum presented a variety of special programs for every age and interest, including: Valentine’s Day Tea, Grandparents Day, mentoring students creative writing skills, Mother’s Day Tea, an annual Easter Egg Hunt, an Independence Day Celebration, an Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, School Tours, Founder's Day, a Bluegrass Concert,

In its tenth year, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver performed for an enthusiastic sold-out audience during the annual Bluegrass Concert in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. The proceeds supported arts organizations and artists throughout the southeast to prepare for and recover from natural disasters.

In its fifteenth season, the Flagler Museum Music Series featured concerts by the Shanghai Quartet, Yoonie Han and the Gloriosa Trio, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, the Atos Trio, and the Talich Quartet. The theme of the 2014 Whitehall Lecture Series was "Crimes of the Century," which drew record audiences, proving that apparently under some circumstances crime does indeed pay. Each lecture was available via a live webcast, which could be joined free-of-charge from anywhere in the world, and was captured and posted on the GildedAgeHistoryChannel.com - a web-based portal created by the Museum featuring well over 100 video programs related to the Gilded Age. The Museum's Independence Day Celebration in 2014 continued its tradition of celebrating the Nation’s birthday in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion with patriotic music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, the swearing-in of twelve new citizens from twelve countries, ice cream and lemonade – with the evening culminating in a spectacular fireworks show over Lake Worth.

The weekly organ and piano demonstrations added to the Museums program offerings during the off-season in 2013 were made a regular part of the programming off-season in 2014. Each demonstration featured music of the period, much of it written specifically for Florida, which was chosen from the Museum's extensive archival collection. The Museum's website continues to attract more visitors each year. In 2014 more than 132,000 people from 134 countries visited the Museum’s website, and online purchases accounted for about a third of all program ticket sales.

Physical Plant Projects

Over the years, the Museum has made tremendous strides in restoring and improving every part of Whitehall's physical plant. During the last three years, the operation of the Museum's physical plant has largely transitioned from a focus on catching up on a backlog of major projects to an effort to develop and institute a routine and preventative maintenance program. However, in 2014 plans were finalized for a much-needed replacement of the driveway inside Whitehall’s fence and the installation of a drainage system and ex filtration field. However, since the grounds surrounding Whitehall have remained essentially undisturbed for 90 years, this new capital project may prove to be the most challenging yet. Collections Gifts and Acquisitions The Museum was very pleased to add hundreds of objects to its collection in 2014: a gift of eight very early drawings by William Aiken Walker of the Lake Worth area, a gift from the Richard High family of a suite of Whitehall Hotel furniture, and a miniature portrait on ivory of Joseph Jefferson, actor and close friend of Henry Flagler. In addition to the wonderful objects listed above, in 2014 the Museum added to its archival collections and research library hundreds of historic photographs, postcards, stock certificates, architectural prints, sheet music prints, FEC business records, books, and other memorabilia.

The Richard High family donated a suite of furniture to the Museum, including this dresser, from the Whitehall Hotel era.

Conservation and Restoration Caring for 125,000 square feet of building, eight and half acres, and tens of thousands of objects, documents, and ephemera, all while remaining open to the public year round and presenting dozens of programs throughout the year, is definitely a constant challenge. However, in addition to those responsibilities, each year the Museum manages to take on several important conservation and restoration projects. In 2014 the major conservation projects undertaken included: the replication of the missing gnomon for Whitehall’s historically important Sundial, and conservation of the sculpture Putti Playing Music, along with its marble base - which are original to Whitehall’s Music Room. The Flagler Museum Archival and Library holdings are vast and are continually added to. The addition in 2014 of a very large format scanner designed specifically to digitize books and documents that cannot be made flat was made possible through several generous grants, which will ultimately make possible the efficient mining of the wealth of information captured in the tens of thousands of documents in the Museum’s collection.

A gnomon of proper size and shape is essential to the function of a sundial, as shadows cast by the gnomon indicate the time of day.

Leadership and Recognition The Trustees and staff take great pride in the important role that the Museum continues to play in the Town of Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, the State of Florida, and the Nation. In 2014 the Museum was honored with a number of awards, including a Muse Award for Excellence in Historical and Cultural Heritage from the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. This was the second Muse Award presented to the Museum. The Museum was also honored in 2014 to be reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums. As has been the tradition for many years, the Museum hosted the 2014 Palm Beach Civic Association's Annual Meeting and the Mayor's Annual State of the Town Address. The Museum continued to receive an impressive amount of local, national, and international media coverage throughout 2014 - on television, in newspapers, on the radio, and via the Internet. National and international media coverage included: the Chinese language magazine CondĂŠ Nast Traveler, Brazilian airline magazine Avianca em Revista, the Travel Channel's Mysteries at the Castle travel guide, and television coverage on BYU TV's American Ride program. Of course, the recognition that the Museum values most is that of visitors from around the world. In 2014 Flagler Museum visitors continued to rank their visit among the very best museum visitor experiences in the Nation. In fact, no other house museum in the Nation, nor Florida museum of any kind, enjoys better reviews on TripAdvisor.com.
