October 15 - December 29, 2024

The Flagler Museum will open its 2024 - 2025 Season with the exhibition, In the Golden Dreamland of Winter: Henry Flagler’s FEC Hotel Company . The exhibition focuses on the work of Henry Flagler and his transformative impact on the Floridian economy through the Florida East Coast Hotel Company through an indepth exploration of Flagler’s pioneering spirit and his role in opening up Florida as a premier travel destination.

Henry Flagler, often referred to as the inventor of modern Florida, embarked on a bold journey that reshaped the State’s landscape and economy. This exhibition reveals his innovative venture, starting with the establishment of the Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, expanding down the coastline, including the Hotel Royal Poinciana, the largest wooden structure in the world, the Palm

Beach Inn, later renamed as The Breakers, and the Hotel Royal Palm in Miami. Florida’s hotels were more than just accommodations; they represented a gateway to discovery, inviting guests to explore a new and enchanting part of the country.

Flagler’s FEC Hotel Company was a testament to his belief in making the most of life, seeing Florida’s untapped beauty, and taking bold chances to create a thriving hospitality industry that continues to be a mainstay of the State’s economy to this day.

Oh Florida! - Florida Landscapes from the Harn Museum’s Vickers Collection

Winter Exhibition

January 21 - April 20, 2025

Free with Museum Admission

The Winter exhibition, Oh Florida! - Florida Landscapes

From the Harn Museum’s Vickers Collection, celebrates the beauty and history of Old Florida, which captivated visionary Henry Flagler. Once the nation’s last great frontier, Florida was a land of stunning natural beauty that attracted pioneers and tourists alike. The art in this exhibition captures breathtaking landscapes, from pristine beaches and lush wetlands to historic sites like St. Augustine, mirroring Florida’s image in the American imagination as a paradise and place of limitless potential.

Before Henry Flagler’s arrival in the late 19th century, Florida was largely an untamed wilderness, sparsely

populated, and considered by many as an inhospitable frontier. Much of the land was dominated by vast swamps, dense forests, and expansive wetlands. Small settlements and agricultural communities were scattered across the State, particularly along rivers and along the coast.

St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European-settled city in the United States, was and remains historically significant for its architecture from the Spanish colonial period. The few established port towns like Jacksonville and Key West, became important for trade, fishing, and wrecking. However, Florida’s

overall infrastructure was minimal—roads were crude, railways were almost nonexistent, and access to the State’s interior was challenging.

The art in this exhibition showcases Old Florida’s enchanting environment through the eyes of artists whose works capture a time when Florida’s exotic landscapes were much as Flagler and his contemporaries experienced them.

William Randolph Hearst and the New York Journal by John M. Blades, Flagler Museum Executive Director

3:00 pm, Sunday, February 2, 2025

William Randolph Hearst was an American newspaper publisher who built the foundation of one of the nation’s greatest media empires. In 1895, the young newspaperman moved from San Francisco to New York City to create the most successful daily of his time, the New York Journal, and compete with Joseph Pulitzer, a powerful journalist and newspaper publisher of the New York World. The two battled through the 1896 election and the Spanish-American War. The rivalry between the two papers gave rise to yellow journalism, a style of reporting that uses sensationalized news and conspicuous headlines to attract readers.

Lecturer: John M. Blades. Before being appointed as the Executive Director of the Flagler Museum, John Blades worked at Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument over a 20 year period in a variety of positions, including as the Senior Photographer and the Head of the Public Affairs Department.

Joseph Pulitzer and The New York World

by James McGrath Morris, author of Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power

3:00 pm, Sunday, February 9, 2025

Best known today for the prize that bears his name, Joseph Pulitzer transformed American journalism and mass media consumption by making the newspaper an essential feature to urban life. It was not until after serving in the Civil War, that Pulitzer, a Jewish Hungarian immigrant, started his publishing career. In Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power, James McGrath Morris gives an intriguing portrayal of Pulitzer’s long-ranging impact on American politics through the power of his newspapers. Morris skillfully depicts Pulitzer’s transition from a wealthy champion for democracy to a lonely, blind wanderer desperate for a cure. Despite his unfortunate demise, Pulitzer remains an iconic American politician and publisher who changed the landscape of mass media.

Lecturer: James McGrath Morris is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling biographer. He is the author five biographies and three works of narrative non-fiction. His most recent work is Tony Hillerman: A Life, which was a finalist for an Edgar Award. He also serves as Executive Director of the New Mexico Writers organization.

Adolph Ochs and the New York Times by Alex S. Jones, author of The Trust: The Private And Powerful Family Behind The New York Times 3:00 pm, Sunday, February 16, 2025

A detailed and lively story reveals the domestic dramas of one of the most renowned and influential families in twentieth-century America. The Ochs-Sulzberger family have chaired The New York Times for more than a century. In gripping detail, Alex Jones examines the lives of the powerful yet private dynasty that shaped the pages of an iconic newspaper and focuses on a family’s role in creating and nurturing a great American institution and devoting their life to its success.

Lecturer: Alex S. Jones was a journalist for the New York Times from 1983 until 1992. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for his reporting on the news media. During his career, he and his wife Susan E. Tifft wrote two books about newspaper dynasties, one being The Trust. Published in 1999, The Trust was selected by Time magazine as one of the five best nonfiction books of the year, and it was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Adolph Ochs

Horace Greeley and the New-York Tribune by Dr. James M. Lundberg, author of Horace Greeley: Print, Politics, and the Failure of American Nationhood 3:00 pm, Sunday, February 23, 2025

In 1841, Horace Greeley founded the New-York Tribune, a daily newspaper that catered first to the American Whig party until Greeley helped organize the newly emerging Republican Party. Dr. James M. Lundberg will explore the New-York Tribune’s impact on New York’s media market and dissect Greeley’s longing for a morally consistent American nationhood. Although a long-misunderstood figure, Greeley remains one of the most significant American journalists of the nineteenth century.

Son of the founder and publisher of the New York Herald, James Gordon Bennett, Jr. was born in New York in 1841. Educated in the United States and France, young Bennett took over his father’s newspaper at the age of 25 in 1867.
