Annual Report 2023

Henry Morrison Flagler Museum

History is much more than a study of the past, it is an explanation of the present, and a guide to the future. SM

Dear Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors:

On behalf of the Museum’s Trustees and Staff, thank you very much for your support throughout the past year. Your generosity makes possible the preservation of this National Historic Landmark and the Museum’s many excellent programs.

Attendance in 2023 was at a record level, with on-site visitors from more than 60 countries and website visitation from more than 170 countries. The Museum’s exhibitions received rave reviews from audiences and scholars alike and the Museum’s Lecture Series, Music Series and Bluegrass Concert were hugely popular. Memberships at every level saw significant growth.

The Trustees and Staff of the Museum are proud of the many accomplishments and broad support received in 2023. Thank you for playing such a critical role in the Museum’s success. We look forward to seeing you often at the Flagler Museum throughout the year.

The mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to preserve and interpret Whitehall, Henry Flagler’s legacy, and America’s Gilded Age, in ways that inspire every generation to perpetuate and emulate the traditions and values that have made America the most prosperous and generous nation in history.

Executive Director’s Report

Even as the Museum was challenged to rebuild its staff and programming following the pandemic, during the first full year coming out of the pandemic it enjoyed a record year in terms of attendance and support from its many Members, Contributors, and Grantors.

During the year, major conservation projects included a great deal of maintenance work on the climate control system, as well as the commercial air conditioning system. Conservation work on the historic fence and the marble cap on the fence wall left Whitehall’s thousand feet of historic fence looking better than it has since it was built more than 120 years before.

Much work to repair or upgrade a number of systems took place during the year, including a complete upgrade of the Museum’s Security camera system, extensive maintenance and repair of tens of thousands of square feet of flat and tiled roof, and a revamping of the grounds’ sprinkler system. In addition, much of the Museum’s computer hardware and software systems were either replaced or upgraded.

Twenty twenty-three saw the Museum’s return to a full programming schedule that included two exhibitions curated in-house. The winter exhibition, titled The American West During the Gilded Age, drawn largely from the William I. Koch Collection of American Western artifacts, was an overview of the American West during the Gilded Age from a variety of perspectives. The fall exhibition, titled Bicycles: Technology That Changed the World, featured a wide variety of historic bicycles, advertising, and accessories from the Keith Pariani Collection that illustrated how transformative bicycles were in Gilded Age society.

The Flagler Museum Music Series resumed its acclaimed chamber music recitals that have been a mainstay of the Museum’s programming for more than a quarter century, with performances by the Viano String Quartet, Violinist Simone Porter, the Summit Piano Trio, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, and the Neave Trio.

The Whitehall Lecture Series featured seven lectures on the Architects of the Gilded Age, including lectures by Dr. Laurie Ossman on the influence of the École des Beaux-Arts and Henry Flagler’s influence on the success of the firm of Carrère & Hastings, a lecture by Dr. David Brownlee on Horace Trumbauer, a lecture by architect Samuel G. White on his great grandfather Stanford White, a lecture by Dr. Karen McNeill on Julie Morgan, a lecture by Dr. Richard Guy Wilson on Charles Follen McKim, and a lecture by Dr. Kristen Schaffer on Daniel Burnham.

The award-winning Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert resumed with performances by The Larry Stephenson Band and Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers. The Museum wrapped up the Season with its Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Cocoanut Grove and Mother’s Day Tea. The balance of the year included celebrating the birth of our Nation with the annual Independence Day Celebration and the Holiday Season with the Christmas Tree Lighting in the Grand Hall and Holiday Evening Tours.

The Museum is very grateful to its many Grantors, Contributors, Members, and Program Sponsors listed in this report, whose support made possible the Museum’s return to full programming and its record attendance in 2023.
