Your generosity continues to be essential in making the Museum’s many excellent programs possible. Throughout the pages that follow, we know you will enjoy the highlights of a terrific year. There is always something new to see, or to rediscover, at the Flagler Museum. This is the resounding sentiment of our visitors, who return again and again to celebrate the Flagler story. We were so pleased to have visitors from around the corner and from 86 different countries around the globe. The rooms of Whitehall came alive all year with hundreds of public tours led by our expert Docents. The Flagler House and Hotel Tour, our outstanding collaboration with The Breakers, showcased the important historic connection between our two institutions. The Museum’s glorious changing exhibitions in winter and fall focused on the power of portraiture to tell stories of Gilded Age figures and the North American Indian.

Our renowned signature programming, including our Whitehall Lecture Series, Music Series, Bluegrass Concert, and our year-round family and holiday programming, attracted loyal Members and new friends. Our next generation of Museum enthusiasts, the Whitehall Society, came together for important collector programs and social events. We served thousands of schoolchildren and teachers from area counties through field trips and outreach programs, and our Grand Ballroom was the site of a cherished Thanksgiving dinner honoring children in foster care. Traveling Exhibition Special Exhibitions

The Flagler Museum’s fall 2015 exhibition, With a Wink and a Nod: Cartoonists of the Gilded Age, had a successful run at the Richard H. Driehaus Museum in Chicago, where it was visited by nearly 16,000 people between June, 2016, and January, 2017. With a Wink and a Nod featured original cartoon drawings made for Puck, a pioneering American magazine that sought to bring about social change through humor. The exhibition was organized by the Flagler Museum, with special thanks to Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf.

Beauty’s Legacy: Gilded Age Portraits in America Beauty’s Legacy: Gilded Age Portraits in America featured 58 stunning portraits of prominent Gilded Age Americans by leading painters from America and Europe. This exhibition was organized by the New-York Historical Society from their outstanding collection of American art. Beauty’s Legacy explored the critical and popular resurgence of portraiture in the United States during the period bounded by the close of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I. It revealed the highly competitive nature of the portrait market, as American portraitists found themselves in fierce rivalry for American patronage with their European counterparts. The subjects of the portraits – ranging from famous society beauties to powerful titans of business and industry – left lasting legacies that contributed to the cultural and economic growth of the nation.
The exhibition was organized by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis/ New York City/Paris/Lausanne, in collaboration with the Flagler Museum, and curated by Christopher Cardozo.

Edward S. Curtis: One Hundred Masterworks featured extraordinary vintage photographs of the North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis. Curtis, born in 1868, first encountered intact Native American culture on a trip to Montana in 1900, sparking a monumental quest to safeguard and preserve the sacred legacy of the North American Indian for future generations. The project took 30 years, culminating in Curtis’ magnum opus, The North American Indian, a twenty-volume, twenty-portfolio set of handmade books. By his death in 1952, however, Curtis had faded into oblivion. Only recently has his work been rediscovered and treasured as it was more than 100 years ago. His stunning photographs convey the power and dignity of the American Indian, and changed the way the entire nation viewed Native Americans. Today many Native people and their tribes find Curtis’ work an invaluable source for cultural and linguistic revitalization.

Acquisitions The Flagler Museum acquired numerous examples of art, decorative art, and artifacts in 2016, several of which were related to exhibitions organized by the Museum. Sarah Ross Soter donated a beautiful drawing by French Academic artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau, following the Museum’s exhibition of his mythological works. In recognition of the Museum’s upcoming exhibition of the work of Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl in January 2018, Melody Tortosa and John G. Hagan donated four etchings by the artist. The most notable objects added to the Flagler Museum’s Archives and Library in 2016 related to the Florida East Coast Railway and its predecessor railroads, including an FEC Directors’ Meeting Book, 1911 – 1917, that features a touching memorial to founder Henry Flagler after his death on May 20. Flagler’s character was described by employees who clearly loved him: “The achievements of his career were but the natural manifestations of an extraordinary man. A rare combination of genius, energy and steadfastness of purpose, he was born to achieve, and carried out successfully, plans which to many of his fellow-men, seemed daring, if not impracticable.”
This charming sculpture depicting an orchestra of putti by Pietro Bazzanti (Italian, 1825-1895), original to the Music Room, and other significant objects owned by Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, were donated by James G. Kenan III. A study of a nude female by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825 - 1905), 1890, gift of Sarah Ross Soter.
A synthetic ruby ring and antique reproduction pearl choker that belonged to Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, gift of Thomas S. Kenan, III. Mary Lily had these copies made of her precious engagement ring and a beloved choker.
Conservation and Preservation
In 2016, objects conservator Scott Nolley cleaned pieces from the collection made of silver or gilt bronze ormolu, including this pair of English vermeil (or silver gilt) vases by Wiliam Comyns & Sons, London, 1897. The difference between their “before” and “after” appearances is striking.
The restoration of Whitehall’s historic windows continued in 2016, including the stripping, repair, glazing, and repainting of this Billiard Room window.
Thanks to grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Museum completed a major project to improve light filtration for Whitehall’s historic interiors, applying new film on approximately 3,000 panes of glass in 88 historic windows and eight doorways. During his annual visit, clock conservator Bob Desrochers inspected working clocks on display in the Museum, and initiated a conservation survey of the Museum’s collection of 65 clocks and watches.

The Education Department continued to reach new audiences through on-site and outreach programs. Students from Palm Beach, Broward, Martin, and Okeechobee counties, representing grades 4th through 12th, visited Whitehall during the school year to learn about the legacy of Henry Flagler and his importance in Florida’s history. The Museum hosted its first annual Educator Reception in October for an evening of networking, with a special viewing of the Edward S. Curtis: One Hundred Masterworks. The Reception served as a launch pad of new opportunities for teachers, including the chance to schedule a class visit and lesson in the exhibition space. Outreach programs provide a way for students to access the Museum’s information without the difficulties of transportation or loss of instructional time. The Kidnapped in Key West program served over 1,000 students from different schools in the area. The Museum Education Team led the interactive presentation that tells the story of Henry Flagler’s Florida railroad and hotel development with students playing the parts in a reenactment of Flagler’s arrival in Key West. In 2016 the Museum celebrated a five-year partnership with Palm Beach Day Academy. Each year a customized curriculum introduces 1st graders to museums, collections, and Henry Flagler. The program was expanded in 2016 and offered to one of our public school partners, Palmetto Elementary. Students learned about the purpose of museums, organized Flagler’s paintings into cohesive collections, and “raced” along the FEC route to Key West in a series of learning games. A field trip to Whitehall to view the collections in person was the culminating activity.
Public Program Highlights • At the beginning of 2016, the Museum announced the addition of a Portuguese audio tour, which increased offerings to five languages available in written brochures and audio tours. • In the spirit of ‘never having enough visitors,’ the Museum invited 2,500 Founder’s Day attendees to enjoy a return visit using complimentary Tour Passes through the summer. Using those passes, nearly 500 visitors took advantage of the offer. • In early fall, Hilton West Palm Beach signed on to be the exclusive hotel sponsor of the Whitehall Lecture Series. • We had the pleasure of participating in a leadership team exchange with Hermès Palm Beach. Our teams came together for fellowship and to showcase our respective collections and discuss ways to work together in the future. • When Royal Poinciana Plaza newcomer Sant Ambroeus opened their newest restaurant location just a few doors away from the Museum, we were thrilled to welcome them to the neighborhood, and, in turn, received their support in planning an upcoming crosspromotion around the Museum’s Holiday Evening Tour program. With an emphasis on expanding audiences and cultivating community support, the Museum’s efforts to reach out to partner organizations and area businesses have led to strong, new connections. We look forward to fostering these new relationships for years to come. Howdy, Neighbor! 2017 Update The Museum hosted a cocktail reception for our friends at the Palm Beach Towers in March, 2017. The entire Museum was open for touring, and a wonderful new spirit of neighborliness was established. Stay tuned for more neighbor receptions!
Museum Store In this era of technology and e-readers, it is exciting to report that the Museum Store’s book sales continue to grow at a staggering rate. In 2016, the store reached the monumental goal of selling over $100,000 in books. Put in perspective, this was a 24% increase over 2015’s total, and a remarkable 75% gain in sales revenue over a five-year period. What separates our book department from other stores is its niche focus on Gilded Age history. The Museum Store currently carries over 600 titles pertaining to our mission, the largest collection available on the time period.

In 2016, the Flagler Museum Docent Corps contributed a record number of service hours. Our Docents can be found giving tours to the public, engaging with guests at member events, assisting customers in the Museum Store, and compiling collections records. To promote team building, we launched a series of social activities over the summer. Docents enjoyed a Jupiter Hammerheads baseball game, strolled through Mounts Botanical Garden, and marked the end of the season with a gelato party. We also welcomed a new class of Docents in 2016. Four trainees spent an intensive three week period learning about Henry Flagler and Whitehall, shadowing established Docents, and creating custom tours of Whitehall. The Docent Corps allows the Museum to offer an incredible amount of learning opportunities to visitors throughout the year. Here are just a few of their accomplishments by the numbers:

Flagler’s Spirit Following in the footsteps of Henry Flagler’s generosity to the communities he developed up and down the East Coast of Florida during his lifetime, the Museum proudly launched the “Flagler’s Spirit” initiative during 2016. Flagler demonstrated his generosity by providing land, buildings, and financial support for schools, places of worship, libraries, hospitals, and more. The Museum’s new initiative provides opportunities for children and adults, who may otherwise not have them, to visit Whitehall and experience it in new and meaningful ways. The Flagler Museum hosted a Thanksgiving Day celebration and dinner for the children of KidSanctuary Campus on Thursday, November 24, 2016. The event began with Museum staff and volunteers giving guided tours of Whitehall’s rooms to the children, and continued with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner served in the Grand Ballroom. Children then toured Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91, and enjoyed dessert on the South Porch. The afternoon culminated with games in the Cocoanut Grove. This was the inaugural event to take place under the Museum’s new Flagler’s Spirit initiative. Kick-Off to Summer! 2017 Update Flagler’s Spirit was evident again when the Museum hosted a kick-off-to-summer picnic for clients and partners of Feeding South Florida on June 12, 2017. The day included a delectable picnic lunch on the grounds, tours of the Museum, and even a small train filled with giddy children and parents.
