Supporting the Flagler Museum’s Education Programs for Children

When it was completed in 1902, the New York Herald proclaimed that Whitehall, Henry Flagler’s home in Palm Beach, was “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.” As wonderful as Whitehall was in 1902, and remains today, it was built to be, and has always been, so much more than a house. Unlike any of Flagler’s other homes, Whitehall was a literal manifestation of Andrew Carnegie’s admonition, in his essay titled The Gospel of Wealth, to his fellow titans of business that, “It is well, nay essential, for the progress of the race that the houses of some should be homes for all that is highest and best in literature and the arts, and for all the refinements of civilization...” Carnegie’s description of the kind of houses the business leaders of the Gilded Age should build, is a near-perfect description of a museum. After all, the word museum literally means “a home for the Muses of arts and literature and their works.” And Florida’s first museum, is exactly what Henry Flagler built. Today, Whitehall is a National Historic Landmark and a public museum that has been visited by millions from around the world. It stands as a monument to a time when the American character we celebrate was born from a unique series of events that came together in history, at only one time and in only one place - here, in America. Florida could not have hoped for a more appropriate or impressive place as its first museum.

Bal Poudrés are literally powdered wig balls, and were popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, both in America and in England. For example, in England, the Countess of Warwick loved to host Bal Poudrés. In America, Bal Poudrés were an interesting fusion of America’s fascination with Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI and America’s hero worship of George and Martha Washington. Bal Poudrés were typically hosted around the time of George Washington’s birthday, in late February or early March, which coincided perfectly with the end of the Season in Palm Beach. On March 3, 1903, the first Bal Poudré in Palm Beach was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Flagler in Whitehall’s Grand Ballroom. It was described in a newspaper account of the time as, “One of the most sumptuous social affairs ever attempted south of Washington.” From that first Bal Poudré at Whitehall in 1903 sprang all of the galas hosted each year for which Palm Beach has become so well known.

The Soirée Poudré Presented by the Flagler Museum’s Whitehall Society, the Soirée Poudré was added as a spectacular crowning event to the Bal Poudré for the first time in 2015. Following the Bal Poudré dinner, guests are invited to join the Soireé Poudré in the Museum’s Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Hosted by the Whitehall Society, the Museum’s next generation of friends and supporters, guests will enjoy cocktails, entertainment and dancing. Proceeds from the entire evening benefit the Flagler Museum’s education programs.

The tradition of ending each Season with a Bal Poudré continued in Palm Beach until 1913 when the tradition was suspended as a consequence of World War I. In honor of Flagler’s amazing and enduring legacy in Palm Beach and Florida, the Flagler Museum and the Whitehall Society will host a Bal Poudré and a Soirée Poudré on Friday, February 17, 2017, at Whitehall. The Bal Poudré and Soirée Poudré will together create a memorable evening that will take you back in time, when thousands traveled to enjoy Florida’s tropical splendors and Palm Beach’s lavish soirées during Season. The evening will begin as guests enter through Whitehall’s massive bronze doors to enjoy featured cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Grand Hall, followed by an elegant dinner amid the Louis XV interior of the Grand Ballroom. After dinner, guests are invited to dance the night away, at the Soirée Poudré, in the Museum’s Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

The Educational Opportunities Your Sponsorship Will Support Henry Flagler was a firm believer in community support and education. Since 1980, the Flagler Museum has continued Flagler’s legacy through its support of Florida social studies curriculum and student tours free-of-charge. The Museum serves 4,000 school children each year through these field trips.

Many schools, however, are not able to take advantage of the Museum’s free school tours because they cannot afford bus transportation. New in 2016, support from Museum Members and Contributors has allowed the Museum to offer busing to schools that could otherwise not visit the Museum. Support from the Bal and Soirée Poudré in 2017 will expand this program.

Field Trips

The Flagler Museum produces Newspapers In Education Tabloids. For example, Flagler’s Florida, a Newspapers in Education Tabloid, illustrates the story of Henry Flagler’s profound and enduring contributions to the development of Florida and Palm Beach County. It offers a unique glimpse into Florida’s history during the Gilded Age and the role Henry Flagler played in inventing modern Florida. This publication was created as a supplement to the classroom curriculum with Florida’s Sunshine State Standards in mind, and was distributed to over 250,000 fourth and fifth grade students from Jacksonville to Key West. All Flagler Museum Newspapers In Education Tabloids are available for teachers to download from the Museum’s website.

For 30 years the Flagler Museum has partnered with Title 1 schools in Palm Beach County to provide students an opportunity to participate in the Museum’s Intergenerational Mentor Program for Art, Culture, and Technology. IMPACT provides a supplement to classroom learning by focusing on improving creative writing skills and building intergenerational relationships. The students take special tours of Whitehall and Railcar No. 91, see objects from the Museum’s Archives, and create a book of essays.

Special children’s programs are produced to complement commemorative years. For example, during the centennial year of the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad, special Library Editions of the Museum’s Centennial Edition of Last Train to Paradise were sent to nearly 3,000 libraries from Jacksonville to Key West, and more than 2,000 students at nearly 30 schools participated in Museum-led on-site activities and programs in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties.

Children visiting the Museum with their families are offered a Tour and Activity Guide for Kids, which engages the child in activities that enhance their visit and facilitate learning.

These programs and others that the Museum is developing for the 2016 - 2017 school year, and into the future, are made possible in part through the generous support of the Bal Poudré and Soirée Poudré Sponsors.
