Their visit included a guided tour with the Flagler Museum's Treasurer and great-grandson of Henry Flagler, William M. Matthews (far right), and Executive Director Erin Manning (far left).

To our dear Museum Friends: T
hank you for supporting the Flagler Museum. Throughout the course of each year, it is important to reflect on our achievements and provide feedback to those who are responsible for our success. We present to you our Annual Report to document our responsible stewardship of your gifts. We hope that you were able to visit the Museum during 2018 to enjoy our exhibitions and programs. From the exquisite paintings of Ignaz Gaugengigl in the winter to the exhilarating portraits of Edward Steichen in the fall, these two artists brought us the power and subtlety of human emotion and expression. Gifts to our Permanent Collection included noteworthy landscape paintings, in the style that Henry Flagler enjoyed and collected in his lifetime, that are now hanging throughout Whitehall’s second floor bedrooms. Our staff was delighted to welcome over 200 schoolteachers from around Palm Beach County to our Annual Educator Reception, held at the beginning of the fall season to showcase our newest exhibition. The exchange of goodwill and collective commitment to educating students of all ages was palpable that evening. Generous grant support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Tourist Development Council, the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and VISIT FLORIDA provided critical support for our marketing, education and conservation work. Private foundation support and corporate sponsorships are also the backbone of our ability to serve visitors from around world with our signature programming. We were thrilled to welcome 83,527 people to the Museum during 2018. We hope that you count yourself among those visitors, knowing that our doors are open to all, 12 months a year. Here’s to expanding our reach in the community as we enter our 60th Anniversary in 2019 — thank you for being with us! Sincerely,

This is what we heard from teachers and chaperones when the Flagler Museum's Education Department took its programs, such as Kidnapped in Key West, to our local schools in 2018. The Flagler Museum is proud to report that we reached more than 4,100 students through 49 events.

The inquiry-based learning program has students work in groups to design a section of Flagler's Over-Sea Railroad while maintaining a budget to buy supplies for its success. This program encourages students to consider the scientific and cultural importance of the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

Inspired services for our community
H
enry Flagler demonstrated his generosity to the communities he developed along Florida's eastern coastline by providing land, buildings and financial support for schools, places of worship, libraries, hospitals, agricultural operations and more. Following in Flagler's footsteps, the Museum launched the Flagler's Spirit initiative in 2016 as a way to provide opportunities for children and adults, who may otherwise not have them, to visit Whitehall and experience it in meaningful ways. In February 2018, our first Flagler's Spirit guests for the year joined us from The Lord's Place in West Palm Beach. They took a group tour of the Museum and enjoyed tea in the CafĂŠ des Beaux Arts. In March, a group tour and tea service was also provided for 20 caregivers of wounded veterans in collaboration with the Renewal Coalition of Jupiter. In October, a week long clothing drive benefited Dress for Success Palm Beaches (shown at right). And in December, students in the Delray Beach-based Bound for College preparatory program (top right) learned about the Museum as a workplace, and the educational and career paths they could follow to find jobs in the field.
