Gowns displayed to honor Museum founder In celebration of the Museum’s 60th anniversary and in step with its recent fashion-focused exhibitions, two gowns were on display to honor Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, who founded the Museum in 1959. The gold and silver brocade ballgown and high-heel dress shoes worn by Mrs. Matthews at the Restoration Ball held on February 6, 1960, were displayed in the Grand Hall near her portrait. Mrs. Matthews' ca. 1934 silk wedding dress was featured in the Grand Ballroom. The Museum is grateful to Betsy K. Matthews and Roe Green for their generous support of the conservation of these dresses.

We celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Museum’s founding, we welcomed 86,132 visitors from around the corner and around the world, we welcomed back the spectacular Dining Room Furniture suite to its original home, we crafted a new strategic plan for our organization, and we worked to George G. Matthews, make lasting new friendships. President, Board of Trustees We reflect on the year with gratitude to all who took time to involve themselves in the life of the Flagler Museum. We shine a light on your involvement with this Annual Report. As there are stunning new challenges in our world since we closed out 2019, Erin Manning, we are working to be patient in Executive Director our desire to return to a normal life. We know that history teaches us how to approach the future, and we must be ready to do even more. We look forward to seeing you all again, when the time is right. After 60 years, the original ca. 1900 Francis I suite is back at Whitehall
W
hitehall’s original ca. 1900 French Renaissance-style dining table, chairs, and sideboards are now back on display in their original locations after a yearlong conservation process, which began shortly after the furniture was purchased by the Museum in 2018. “Visitors will now be able to see where Henry and Mary Lily Kenan Flagler dined with their guests, from business leaders to politicians to artists and actors, during the very first social seasons here in Palm Beach,” said Erin Manning, Executive Director of the Flagler Museum. “The Museum is grateful to Thomas S. Kenan, III and the Stockman Family Foundation for their generous donations toward the return and restoration of the furniture.” Made in America of satinwood, the set boasts elaborate carvings, the most intricate found on the two sideboards. The 5-foot wide expandable dining table has four leaves with state-of-the-art telescoping mechanisms of that era, allowing it to go from 12 feet to 20 feet in length, which is how Museum visitors view the table when walking through the Dining Room. All 24 upholstered chairs are on display, including two armchairs at the table ends. While some of the original Aubusson tapestry chair backs and seat covers survive, they were deemed too delicate to be used for the conservation of the furniture. Instead, visitors will view modern reproductions of the fabric work, which closely mimic the original weave, colors and depictions of classical gods and goddesses as well as fruits and foliage. F. Carey Howlett & Associates was hired by the
Flagler Museum to research, examine and conserve the furniture. As part of the conservation process, the tapestries were replicated, damage to the wood repaired, lost details restored, and the finish brought back to its true tone. After the deaths of Henry Flagler in 1913, and his widow Mary Lily Kenan Flagler in 1917, Whitehall and its contents were inherited by Mary Lily’s niece, Louise Clisby Wise Lewis. In the early 1920s, the bulk of the contents of the home were sold, including the Dining Room suite. Over the ensuing decades, the furniture changed hands several times, and was most recently located in a corporate board room in Chicago until the Museum acquired it. Today, the Dining Room has been returned to the way interior designers Pottier and Stymus intended it in 1902. As Tatler wrote in a March 1903 issue: “The buffets and china cabinets are similarly carved and regarded as the most artistic ever done in this country. Table and chairs are of satin wood, the latter upholstered with Aubusson tapestries, designed and woven especially for them; the table covered with green velour with a richly wrought border.” During the 11 years of the Flaglers’ residency, the Dining Room was the site of many dinners attended by such notable people as actor Joseph Jefferson, statesman Elihu Root, industrialist Henry C. Frick, and members of the Rockefeller and Vanderbilt families. Carey Howlett spoke at the Flagler Museum in December 2019 about the conservation project. Off-season façade facelift
During the months of July, August and September 2019, scaffolding covered the Front Portico and South Porch. Peeling paint was removed, crumbling plaster and rotting wood were repaired with keen attention to the decorative details, and a fresh coat of paint was applied.

I
n 2019, the Flagler’s Spirit team coordinated a women’s undergarments drive with Dress for Success Palm Beaches in conjunction with the Museum's fall exhibition, Inside Out: Women's Fashion from Foundation to Silhouette. More than 100 new foundation pieces were donated by our local community in October and November. In September, the Flagler’s Spirit team and Museum staff donated supplies to local relief efforts for our neighbors in the Bahamas, who were devastated by Category 5 Hurricane Dorian.
