re-opening milestone reached: 5,000 VISITORS! Amy Biegaj purchased our 5,000th general admission ticket since we reopened in June. Amy and her husband Bill visited Whitehall on October 6th.

Opposite page: The Flagler Museum reopened to the public on June 9th, 2020, after having closed to the public on March 17th. Our first two visitors on June 9th are pictured here entering Whitehall on our one-way fixed route. The Museum is limiting the number of guests per hour to maximize social distancing. Above: New safety protocols include single use paper self-guide brochures and hand sanitizer stations throughout the Museum, including in the Museum Store (which was moved into the spacious West Room).

General Admission Programs ORGAN & PIANO DEMONSTR ATIONS On Tuesdays at 1:30 pm through November 10th, professional musicians will exercise the J.H. & C.S. Odell Co. organ in the Music Room and the Steinway Model B grand piano in the Drawing Room. The demonstrations will span both the 1 pm and 2 pm general admission timed entry periods. For safety, members of the Museum's Docent team will ask visitors to continue moving along the fixed route while enjoying the glorious volume of music echoing throughout Whitehall’s first floor.

FLAGLER’S SPIRIT BOOK DRIVE During the last two weeks in October, the public was invited to donate new books for young readers (pre-K to 5th grade) when visiting the Museum. The books were collected for distribution to local children in partnership with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County.

TEACHER APPRECIATION HOURS Free admission, free educational resources plus a special gift were offered to local educators from October 21st to 24th as a “thank you.” The educator-only self-guided tours included Whitehall and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Teachers also enjoyed socially-distanced shopping in the Museum Store. Each educator received a Museum gift bag which included keepsake maps, resources and mementos, as well as a collection of exhibit catalogs and a book of historic photos of Palm Beach. Teacher Appreciation Hours are generously underwritten by

General Admission Programs CHRISTMAS AT WHITEHALL Holiday decorations will be on display this December through Christmas Eve during all general admission hours. The 16-foot tall Grand Hall Christmas Tree, with its historically accurate trimmings and electric lights, will welcome all visitors to Whitehall to celebrate the holiday season. Additional hours for self-guided tours have been added on December 20 through 23 from 6 to 8 pm. Reservations for these special admission hours are required in advance and will be available for purchase starting November 10th either online or by calling (561) 655-2833. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children.

DID YOU KNOW? Henry Flagler spent Christmas in Florida from 1885 until his death in 1913. When the Flaglers were in Palm Beach during Christmastime, they entertained lavishly, and would invite their closest friends and relatives to be house guests at Whitehall during the festivities.

museum store update

Socially-distanced holiday shopping The Museum Store, now located in the spacious West Room, is offering Christmas and Hanukkah items for your home. We have three Flagler-tastic holiday decorating themes this year: "Under the Sea" features whimsical sea creatures and fish ornaments in shades of blue, green and coral; "Florida Tropical" includes exotic birds and animals with deep purples, dark fuchsias and tropical greens; and "Chinoiserie" harkens to the popular Gilded Age decorating scheme with a blue and white color palette and Far East-inspired ornaments. Fully decorated Christmas trees are available for purchase!

Last season was cut short when the Museum closed on March 17th due to COVID-19. If you missed seeing Walk This Way: Historic Shoes from the Stuart Weitzman Collection, you’ll be pleased to know all 100 pairs of shoes remain on display in our second floor exhibition gallery until early 2021. Despite the closure, almost 40,000 people have enjoyed this exhibit so far! Walk This Way explores how shoes have transcended their utilitarian purpose to become representations of culture — coveted as objects of desire, designed with artistic consideration, and expressing complicated meanings of femininity, power, and aspiration for women and men alike. This exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society. The exhibition is funded in part by:

Not ready to visit in person yet? Engage with us online

The Flagler Museum crafted its 20202022 Strategic Plan earlier this year. While the pandemic has caused an unexpected pivot, key elements of the Strategic Plan are being implemented, including: • Development of a mentoring/ leadership program for young adults; • Creation of a long-term preventative maintenance plan for Whitehall; • Expansion of store merchandise.

This past summer, the Museum presented a virtual lecture about women’s suffrage, broadcasting live from the Flagler Kenan Pavilion on the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. This lecture, as well as other archived talks by notable presenters, is available for viewing online from the comfort of your own home. Our virtual tour of Whitehall is also available to those who are not quite ready to visit us in person. Each room on the tour includes a photo, text and corresponding audio narration. Want to learn even more about Henry Flagler and America's Gilded Age? Our Museum Store has curated book packages available for purchase online. Topics span from architecture and art, to war and industry, to entertaining and etiquette!

Safety and cleanliness is always a priority at the Flagler Museum. In July, we joined Discover the Palm Beaches and other tourism and hospitality businesses in Palm Beach County, FL, in taking The Palm Beaches Pledge, a promise to follow guidelines from health and government officials designed to keep visitors, staff and loved ones safe. Those guidelines come from the Office of the Governor, Palm Beach County and the Town of Palm Beach, as well as safety mandates from the CDC. The Museum is currently pursuing a GBAC STAR accreditation with the assistance of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.

our buildings In early autumn, the skylight in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion was cleaned and the weather stripping replaced as a preventative measure against leaks. Also this fall, chipped paint was removed and a fresh coat applied to some of Whitehall's first floor windowsills and to the stairs that provide access to Railcar No. 91. On October 16th, Whitehall was lit in a wash of green as part of the "Restart with the Arts" economic recovery campaign for Palm Beach County's cultural sector.

from the executive director

Dear Flagler Museum Friends:

T

hank you to our Members, sponsors and donors for your continuing friendship and support during 2020. Your generosity means everything. We are proud to present our new Inside Whitehall, with a refreshed look that symbolizes the hope of the entire Flagler team. Since our reopening on June 9th, we have been reminded each day of the public’s love of Whitehall and we are so proud to open our doors and safely welcome visitors once more. There was so much silence in the house between March and June; so much silence. And it reminded us that our visitors’ voices filled with joy and laughter are what bring this house to life. Our fantastic team of staff is vigilant in maintaining our safety priorities and will remain so for as long as it takes for all to be comfortable coming through our doors. We look forward to 2021, and continued progress in the global fight against COVID-19. The Flagler Museum is here, always, for our community, and we look forward to serving our guests for generations to come. Sincerely,
