T

his summer, the Flagler Museum joins more than 2,000 museums and attractions nationwide to offer free admission to active duty military personnel and their families through the Blue Star Museums initiative. We are also collaborating with five participating attractions here in Palm Beach County to celebrate these heroes on national holidays and at military appreciation events. The Library Adventure Museum Pass (LAMP) connects us to children who hold library cards through the Palm Beach County Library System in June and July. Complimentary Museum tour passes are given to lucky winners of each month's LAMP drawing, providing learning opportunities for local youth and families while schools are on summer break. Through MOSAIC, the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County's Month of Shows, Art, Ideas and Culture, we once again offered a free gift with admission, this time during the month of May. MOSAIC's iconic green sunglasses popped up on Whitehall's front lawn in support of this cultural arts awareness campaign geared towards restarting the sector. In a collaboration with the Town of Palm Beach United Way, the Flagler's Spirit team hosted the Empty Your Pantry Food Drive in April, accepting donations to support local United Way partners El Sol, a resource center in Jupiter, and The Glades Initiative. “Thank you for your military service,” is a sentiment our team at the Museum will be expressing to our Blue Star visitors all summer long. We also thank those who serve others in their daily work, like our friends noted above. We love collabs, and look forward to making new friends all year long. You inspire us, as we feel the overwhelming optimism of the coming year at the Flagler Museum! Executive Director

visitor experience

General admission back to "normal" this summer In the Pre-Season 2020 issue of Inside Whitehall published last fall, numerous but necessary modifications to the general admission visitor experience were detailed for our readers: Masks were required. Advance ticket purchase was required. Cash was not being accepted. Guests were asked to follow a one-way route. Parties were limited to four to ensure safe social distancing practices. Now, approximately one year after reopening last June, the Museum is getting back to normal — and dare we say better — operations as we literally lift the ropes on previous restrictions. Masks or face coverings are now optional for those visiting the Museum. Hand sanitizer stations remain strategically in place throughout Whitehall and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, and the Museum continues its stringent cleaning protocols per our accreditation as a GBAC Star Facility. The Museum Store and admissions kiosks are now accepting cash payments in addition to credit cards. Reservations to enter the Museum are no longer required in advance, and we are open on Sundays again. Those interested in purchasing tickets online

may still do so by visiting our website. Complimentary audio tour wands (sanitized before and after each use) are once again a tour option, and guests may explore the Museum on a route of their own choosing. We look forward to announcing the return of our volunteer Docents as well as guided tours soon!

Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert marked 15th annual show Dailey & Vincent, along with Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers, performed for a very enthusiastic audience of bluegrass fans in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion on April 10th, marking the 15th annual event held at the Flagler Museum. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent took a moment out of the show to pay tribute to George G. Matthews, President of the Museum's Board of Trustees, recognizing his enduring support of the event and the musical genre.

buildings & grounds update New plants were recently installed in the circular driveway to bring life back to the historic fountain and north side of the Museum grounds (shown). This garden area is dedicated to our founder, Jean Flagler Matthews. The entry kiosks' awnings were repaired and the fabric updated to match the South Porch. With the hurricane season upon us, windows were resealed and repainted to protect Whitehall against water intrusion. The loading ramp in the back parking lot was also replaced. Areas inside the Hotel Addition, including the ceiling and walls in the West and Lake Rooms, were repaired and repainted. Visitors may see artisans restoring the marble and wrought iron perimeter fence in the coming months.

collections update

New acquisitions detail Flagler's railroad accounts Perhaps Henry Flagler’s most significant legacy in Florida is the construction of a continuous railroad stretching the length of the state's eastern coast. When he arrived in Florida, Flagler found that there had been almost no railroad construction in the state since the end of the Civil War. St. Augustine was a frontier in terms of transportation, largely separated from the developing modern transportation network of the eastern United States. Realizing that the key to developing Florida and the success of his hotel ventures was a solid transportation system, Flagler began buying up short-run railroads in North Florida and built a railroad bridge across the St. Johns River to gain access to the southern half of the state. By early 1889, Flagler's system offered service from Jacksonville to Daytona. In 1892, when landowners south of Daytona petitioned him to extend the railroad southward, Flagler began laying new railroad tracks, reaching what is today known as West Palm Beach in 1894. In 1895, Flagler officially changed the name of his accumulated railroads to the Florida East Coast Railway. Within less than 10 years of his first railroad purchase, Flagler dramatically expanded rail transportation in Florida from a few short, unconnected (and largely failing) businesses, to a coordinated system extending from Jacksonville to the Lake Worth area. The railroad reached the southernmost point in the United States in 1912. The Museum is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of two important artifacts documenting the history of Flagler’s railroads. An 1886 voucher book logs purchases Visitors to Whitehall may view the 1886 voucher book (top) in a display case in the 2nd floor South Breezeway. made by the Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Halifax River Railway Company and a Florida East Coast Railway Company/Flagler System ledger records accounts later in the company’s history, ca. 1914. These new additions will assist in our continuing research and documentation of Flagler’s endeavors and the development of modern Florida.

Free admission in high demand during weekend-long Founder's Day celebration Every year on June 5th the Flagler Museum honors our founder and Henry Flagler's granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, by offering free admission to all visitors during our anniversary celebration. This year's event was extended through the weekend to June 6th! Normally the Museum opens its gates to thousands of guests in a matter of hours, but this year capacity was limited and timed entry reservations were required in advance for safety. Despite these parameters, almost 750 guests attended — and in the spirit of past years, the Museum sent an additional 1,000 complimentary Tour Passes

Visitors were all smiles on June 5th and 6th, a warm and sunny weekend. Many children explored Whitehall and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion with their families using the Tour & Activity Guide for Kids. The guide includes stops at Railcar No. 91 (top) and our founder's portrait (right).

refreshments

This summer, enjoy a PICNIC in the breezy Cocoanut Grove PICNIC by the Café des Beaux-Arts offers summertime guests delicious refreshments from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The grab-and-go fare and ice cold beverages may be enjoyed outside in the shade of the Cocoanut Grove overlooking picturesque Lake Worth. PICNIC's menu includes the same black tea served by the Café des Beaux-Arts, a Harney & Sons blend made specially for the Museum. Lemonade is also on the menu with PICNIC's cold and slightly sweet version of the black tea, both served in glass bottles. Hungry guests have made the Whitehall Turkey Sandwich — topped with brie

and cranberry sauce and served on a crusty baguette — our best seller! The Cheese Platter, with its assortment of cured meat, fruit, honey and artisan crackers, or the Crudité Tray of fresh vegetables with a creamy dip are excellent choices for sharing. Sweet treats include lavender cookies and a decadent cupcake. Seating is available in the Cocoanut Grove on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations or pre-orders are not required, as PICNIC's fare is sold à la carte in the Museum Store.
