recent accolades

University partnerships honor Flagler's legacy in education

The Flagler Museum was re-accredited as a GBAC Star Facility in November 2021 by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, a division of the worldwide cleaning industry association known as ISSA. This accreditation is considered the gold standard for facilities that have proven the implementation of the most stringent cleaning protocols, disinfection and infectious disease prevention and is a testament to the diligence of the Museum's highly skilled custodial team.

ast October, a group of select higher education students known as the Flagler Scholars from Florida Atlantic University's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College took a tour of Whitehall during a retreat (pictured below), launching the Museum into a wonderful new collab with FAU. During the spring 2022 semester, FAU student ambassadors are "on the floor" at Whitehall, greeting guests and assisting with interpretation of the Museum's collections. An Honors College sophomore has also been awarded an internship with our Public Affairs department this semester for course credit. Don't forget about our other exciting collaboration with the University of Miami, as talented students and faculty from the Frost School of Music take to the stage for our 2022 Music Series in February and March. See you at the shows!

Frankenthaler grant funds energy efficiency study In the summer of 2021, the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation awarded a Scoping Grant to the Museum through its Frankenthaler Climate Initiative, the first nation-wide program to support energy efficiency and clean energy use for the visual arts and the largest private national grant-making program to address climate change action through cultural institutions. Its grants (which also include Technical Assistance and Implementation funds) provide critical support to visual art museums in the United States seeking to assess their impact on the environment and to lower ongoing energy costs, which are among the highest fixed costs faced by museums. This past fall, a consultant from Landmarks Facilities Group, Inc. (LFG) spent two days conducting an on-site inspection of the Museum's climate control system. LFG worked with the Museum when the original system was designed and installed in the late

We're jazzed up about 2022's live music performances The 2022 Music Series, now underway, will feature jazz music for the first time in program history. And the talented musicians bringing this new genre to Whitehall's Grand Ballroom and Flagler Kenan Pavilion are faculty and students from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. Dean Shelly Berg, an awardwinning pianist who balances teaching and touring, launched the series for the Museum on February 1st, introducing three faculty members as the Frost Faculty String Trio. On February 8th, KHAOS Wind Quintet (top right) brought international flair to their unique program, with members hailing from Greece, France, Brazil and the United States and each touting doctorates in music. All six programs feature award-winning students and professional musicians who double as faculty. The final program on March 8th includes acclaimed jazz drummer Dafnis Prieto, who is a MacArthur Fellow, and trumpeter Brian

Lynch, both GRAMMY™ award winners. On March 3rd, Afrique Ngozi Dance and Drum (left) brings rhythm and beats from the African diaspora to the Whitehall Society's Mixing It Up event, which is also open to the public. Bluegrass in the Pavilion returns on April 23, featuring The Tim Raybon Band (center) and High Fidelity (above). Expect to hear bluegrass, gospel, country and Americana style music at this knee-slapping event. Tickets are still available to all performances.

together, at the table series

Food Talks focus on foodways of the South

Swank Farm anchors Florida's Fall Harvest The first program in the Together, at the Table series was a 5-course farm-to-table dinner on November 18, 2021. Chef Pushkar Marathe's menu put a spotlight on local agriculture and aquaculture, including fresh produce from Swank Farm in Loxahatchee Groves. More than 75 guests attended the sold-out event, which was held in the West Room.

Clockwise from top left: Shawn and Jim Quigley; Cynthia Hoyt, Jamie Dailey, and Museum Trustee Barry Hoyt; Tara Schaefer, Carol Simard, Jana Simard Parker, Liz Nowacki.

The Together, at the Table program series took over the annual Whitehall Lecture Series this year to present special lectures focused on food. Scholars Anna O. Hamilton and Zella Palmer presented "Food Talks" in February discussing food systems and the cultural heritage of food in the American Hamilton South. Hamilton explored Florida foodways, focusing on early settlers in northeast Palmer Florida and agricultural history and food culture dating back to the late 1800s. Palmer dove into the cultural history and people of Creole cooking, which she presented as a defining factor of the regional cuisine of the American South. The Museum broadcasted both lectures live via its website. The recorded videos remain online to watch at no cost. Please visit www. flaglermuseum.us/watch-lectures.

Eight reasons to gather Together, at the Table These items from the Museum's pantry display located on the first floor of Whitehall were photographed to illustrate the cover of the 2021-2022 Season Program Guide, as well as our new program series called Together, at the Table. Questions came flying in from visitors and Members alike about the plates, teapot, creamer, cups and saucers. Here's a look at all eight: 1. Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain, c. 1847-1850. This plate is part of a dinner service thought to be original to Whitehall. 2. Limoges "La Cloche" chinaware, c. 1900. Decorated with oranges, this cup and saucer is part of a set gifted by the Flaglers to Henry's personal secretary,

Warren Smith, upon his wedding. 3. Plate from a limited edition set made by Royal Doulton and donated to the Museum in 1986. 4. This teapot and creamer are part of a Meissen/ Dresden-style tea and coffee service (c. 1763-1774) which came from Brookside, the home of Museum founder Jean Flagler Matthews in Rye, NY. 5. Minton demitasse cup and saucer marked for Gilman Collamore & Co. of New York City. These and the two following pieces were original to Whitehall and were a gift to the Museum from Mary Lily Flagler's grand-niece, Mary Wiley, who grew up at Kirkside, the Flaglers' home in St. Augustine. 6. A gold porcelain plate from a dessert service original to Whitehall. 7. Hand-painted fish swim around a plate by Minton. 8. Also hand-painted, the picture on this Limoges plate is titled "In Cantina" and is signed by F. Villetelle and F. Andreotti. The latter may be an Italian painter name Federico Andreotti (1847-1930), known for his paintings of 17th and 18th century costumes and aristocratic scenes. 7 8

Mary Hart

Executive Director, Dress for Success Palm Beaches Allison Goff, Member and Visitor Services Director, recently sat down with Mary, who is a Museum Member and collaborator, to chat about the Museum's impact on her non-profit organization and the local community AG: Mary, it was so nice to have you visit recently to enjoy a Tea lunch with your Dress for Success team members in our Café. We were excited that you celebrated a holiday lunch with them right here at the Museum. As we begin our conversation, can you please give us a brief description of the mission of Dress for Success and who you serve? MH: Our mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence ... by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help them thrive in work and life. Our core program is our suiting program, which provides wonderful outfits for women who are going on job interviews and a full week's worth of clothing when they get hired. We also have job readiness workshops. One focuses on their self-confidence, soft skills and their understanding of their own gifts and talents, resulting in creating a vision board and action

plan for their future. A mentor supports them through that program and beyond. AG: The first time we worked together was in 2018 through Flagler's Spirit, our staff's community outreach program. How does our mission connect with yours? MH: Just as you realize that different programming attracts different people, I think that's the approach we take as well. ... You are helping us educate the community about what we do. A respectable institution like the Flagler Museum really helps the visibility of organizations like ours. AG: Is there an opportunity to emphasize the importance of art and culture when your clients might be struggling to just survive day to day? MH: I didn't grow up in a family where arts and culture were important. I quickly realized that most of my professional peers had been exposed to culture, so I had to really work at growing culturally, because I did feel "less than." I personally can relate to what our clients are going through. So when we have opportunities to provide cultural experiences to our clients, we do so. We can get

our women to these experiences and they find joy in them ... but finding time for culture is difficult for them. AG: Are you looking for employment opportunities in cultural arts for your clients? MH: We have worked with donors on scholarships for education and training programs towards gaining skilled employment. I would love to keep building on that and insert a cultural arts education component. AG: You served on our Strategic Plan Community Committee. Can you describe that experience? MH: I was honored to be invited and wore the hat of both a community leader and a person whose upbringing did not include exposure to Museums. I was really impressed that your organization was willing to involve the community, the transparency, and the resulting plan's themes of inclusiveness and authenticity. AG: What is it about the Flagler story that resonates the most with Dress for Success Palm Beaches and its clients? MH: Henry Flagler was investing in the community, and with a holistic approach. And he is sort of a ragsto-riches story, too! The Flagler's Spirit program is ... continuing that concept. Each time that you wanted to support us with a donation drive, you asked, "What do you need?" If there is any message I can give to anybody who wants to do something philanthropic ... those four words are so critical. It's the best question to ask any non-profit organization, and we appreciate that the Flagler Museum always asks!
