This page: More than 600 guests attended the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on December 5, 2021. Featuring a performance by a local school choir, guests also enjoyed demonstrations on the Odell & Co. organ in the Music Room and Steinway piano in the Drawing Room, and refreshments in the West Room while meeting Santa Claus.

overcoming the pandemic
Returning to normalcy A
s the world began to emerge from the widespread pandemic that was COVID-19, the Flagler Museum began its return to normalcy in 2021, starting with its general admission tours. In late March, the Museum added Sundays back to its general admission hours. By June 15 (one year plus one week after the Museum reopened on June 9, 2020), admissions procedures were completely back to normal as the Museum lifted its party-size restrictions and did away with the requirement to pre-purchase timed entry tickets. Masks and face coverings also became optional, cash was accepted at the entry kiosks and in the store, and audio tour wands in five languages returned as a complimentary touring option. Attendance grew stronger as tourists from all over the world began to return to South Florida during the summer of 2021. Live music returned to Whitehall and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. In April, the rescheduled Bluegrass in the Pavilion performances by Grand Ole Opry stars Dailey & Vincent and Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers dazzled the crowd. In early September, Organ & Piano Demonstrations of Whitehall's historic instruments resumed as part of the Museum's general admission programming through mid-November. A new season of programming was announced in late September with almost all of the Museum's normal annual programming in place, including the return of the Café des Beaux-Arts' tea service, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and the Holiday Evening Tours in December. By year end, the Museum more than doubled visitation from the previous year.

A focus on maintenance In 2021, a team of painters and plasterers focused on Whitehall's interiors and exteriors to ensure the home was weather proofed. Windows were resealed and repainted, and areas inside the Hotel Addition were repaired and repainted. Specialists were also hired to begin a restoration of the 1902 marble and wrought iron perimeter fence that surrounds the property. The entry kiosks were fitted with new awnings to protect visitors from the elements as they enter the Museum's grounds. An aging wooden ramp, bannister and staircase were rebuilt to improve the Museum's loading dock. And an energy efficiency study funded by a Scoping Grant from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation was completed.

Staying connected with students, teachers School field trips and the Museum's in-classroom educational programs remained on pause in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic. But a focus on reaching students and educators in the community continued through two Teacher Appreciation Hours programs which offered complimentary tours and teacher resources. A new relationship began with students and educators at Florida Atlantic University's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. And a program through the Palm Beach County Library System connected children with complimentary Museum Tour Passes while school was out for summer.

Year-round refreshment option added to the menu In April 2021, the Café des Beaux-Arts opened its a la carte refreshment concept called PICNIC, which allowed Museum visitors to enjoy grab-and-go fare and ice-cold beverages outdoors in the Cocoanut Grove. Gilded Agestyle Tea Services resumed the first week of December in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, offering weekday seatings for the 2021-2022 season by reservation. 6

Dining Room décor After the restoration and installation of the original Dining Room furniture suite, the Museum consulted historic photographs of the room taken by Frank Puffer for interior design firm Pottier & Stymus to recreate the room's decor. In 2021, the Museum acquired two objects that closely resemble the silver serving pieces that were displayed on the sideboards. Left: Sterling silver water grapevine wine ewer, J.F. A railroad's financial history
A closeup of the 1886 voucher book showing handwritten entries for expenses paid.
A voucher book dating to 1886 was acquired for the Museum Archives in 2021. It lists the expenses for the Jacksonville St. Augustines and Halifax River Railway Company, a predecessor of the Florida East Coast Railway Company. The majority of the expenses were paid to building and maintaining the railways, evidenced by the entries for cords of wood, cutting and hauling, various train and engine parts, as well as repairs and labor. There were also payments to the Jacksonville Water Works and the St. Augustine Water Company. 7
