‘A person of grace and good humor’ A tribute to our founder, Jean Flagler Matthews

S

ixty years ago, Jean Flagler Matthews, the granddaughter of Henry Morrison Flagler, saved her grandfather’s Palm Beach, FL estate despite never having met him. This decision in 1959 was just the beginning of what became for her a 20-year effort to restore Whitehall, open its doors as a meeting place for charitable, historical and public service organizations and share its treasures with the public as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum.

While some might say the Museum is her most well-known achievement in Palm Beach, Mrs. Matthews was held in esteem as “a great lady” whose philanthropy touched many beyond the walls of Whitehall. Mrs. Matthews was born in 1910 to Henry “Harry” Harkness Flagler, Henry Morrison Flagler’s only son, and his wife Annie Louise Lamont [Flagler]. She grew up in New York as the youngest of Flagler’s three daughters, and graduated from the Chapin School in Manhattan. While she lived in various places over the years, later in life she settled in Rye (Westchester County), NY, and in Palm Beach. An ardent horticulturist, Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Garden Club of America, Garden Council, the New York Botanical Gardens and the Rye (NY) Garden Club. The Horticultural Society of New York awarded Mrs. Matthews a citation for “outstanding leadership.” She kept a scrapbook of her award-winning flowers which included her favorite yellow daffodils. In society, Mrs. Matthews became known as a philanthropist and

In 1979, Stetson University awarded Mrs. Matthews an honorary degree. Mrs. Matthews was also presented a plaque in honor and appreciation for the Flagler family’s support of Flagler Hall.

promoter of the arts — a “quiet giver” who followed in her father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. Throughout her life Mrs. Matthews supported cultural, educational, medical, business, and religious organizations most notably in New York and Florida — often with a focus on youth. In her early 20s, she volunteered with the American National Red Cross and sat on the board of managers at United Hospital in Port Chester, NY. By the 1940s, she was serving on boards and fundraising for schools such as Palm Beach Private School. In the 1950s and ’60s, Mrs. Matthews was supporting organizations benefiting the arts, women, orphans and youth baseball leagues in Westchester County and hospitals, medical research, and the arts in Palm Beach. She was also a well-known lifelong supporter of the Anglican and Episcopal churches in both locales. Her philanthropic leadership and outlook had a direct impact on the beginnings of the Flagler Museum. An early mission statement published in the program of the February 6, 1960 Restoration Ball stated: “The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum was established in 1959 as a non-profit undertaking to perpetuate the memory of Florida’s pioneer and philanthropist,

“She was a great lady who did more good quietly than almost anyone I know. She gave to all charities, and she did it right up to the time of her death.” Harrison K. Chauncey, Jr., a Palm Beach lawyer, former President of the Sailfish Club of Florida and charter member of the Flagler Museum

AWARD-WINNING HORTICULTURIST: Jean Flagler Matthews was an avid gardener and was known to love yellow flowers, especially daffodils. Her home in Rye, NY, called Brookside, would be awash in yellow daffodils in the springtime.

“Like her grandfather, ... Mrs. Matthews was a firm believer in loyalty and friendship, and her field of philanthropy, also like his, included schools, churches and hospitals ... She opened her Rye estate ‘Brookside’ for many charitable affairs, and she especially enjoyed inviting the veterans from a nearby hospital to view her beautiful gardens. It was not an unusual sight to observe Mrs. Matthews wheeling some men around. This lovely lady not only gave her time and money, but her heart as well.” Guides’ Gazette, 1979

and to serve as a permanent headquarters and meeting place for organizations dedicated to public service. Built by Mr. Flagler in 1902, Whitehall was closed after his death in 1913, later became a resort hotel and now will become a part of the Palm Beach cultural, social and civic communities. As such, Whitehall will serve as a museum available for use by charitable, historical and public service organizations ...” In the spirit of that statement, the Palm Beach Historical Society, Palm Beach Roundtable, Palm Beach Opera, Palm Beach Symphony and the Junior League all held offices or headquarters at the Museum until the late 1970s and early ’80s. Mrs. Matthews died in 1979 at the age of 68. Just as her grandfather did, she left behind a legacy of her own, having touched many organizations and individuals. She inspired her three sons to decades of leadership on the Museum’s Board of Trustees. In the 20 years Mrs. Matthews devoted to the Flagler Museum, Whitehall underwent an amazing transformation from withering hotel to community gathering place to national treasure and accredited museum.

JEAN FLAGLER MATTHEWS’ 60-YEAR LEGACY: A TIME LINE BY DECADE

1959

In 1959, Whitehall was at risk of being razed.

1959 - FOUNDING MEMBERS: With Mrs. Matthews seated at center, the other founding members of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in this photo included (from left) Robert E. Lee, Ricardo C. Gonzales, George G. Matthews and Maude Miner Hadden.

When Henry Flagler died in 1913, Whitehall was left to his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, and upon her death Whitehall passed to her niece, Louise Clisby Wise. Mrs. Wise sold the estate to developers in 1925 and the property was turned into the Whitehall Hotel. A 10-story, 300-room tower was erected on the west side of the property along the Intracoastal Waterway. Whitehall’s original rooms were used for guest lounges, card rooms and guest suites. It operated as a hotel for over 30 years but by 1959 the hotel was in financial distress. The hotel owners could not keep up with repairs and announced in April 1959 their plans to sell the property or change its use. Mrs. Matthews learned of the

estate’s fate and worked with the hotel owners to acquire the property and its furnishings for $1,500,000 — substantially less than what the owners were asking. Fortunately, the owners were supportive of Mrs. Matthews’ plan to restore Whitehall to its original grandeur and open it to the public.

Led by Mrs. Matthews, on June 5, 1959, the Articles of Incorporation were signed in New York to form the nonprofit corporation the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Inc., the same day that the Purchase Agreement was fully executed to purchase the property.

’60s

During the first three years of operations, the Board of Trustees hired the Museum’s professional staff; objects and rooms underwent restoration, with many objects being returned to their original locations; and Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91 was purchased in Virginia and taken to South Carolina for exterior renovation before arriving in Palm Beach for interior work. The Museum held a Restoration Ball on February 6, 1960 to raise funds, inviting 600 guests including local and national dignitaries. On the following day, Whitehall opened to the public as the Flagler Museum, welcoming over 1,400 visitors to tour the property. The first free-of-charge Open House was held on February 4, 1961 to commemorate the opening of the Museum the year before. The 1960s also saw the return and 1960 - A BALL TO RAISE FUNDS: Jean Flagler Matthews greets Florida Governor LeRoy Collins at the Restoration Ball. Extensive remodeling, restoration and conservation was completed inside and out in the 1990s, including the stabilization of the ceiling in the Grand Hall. The annual Music Series also began. New technology enabled the launch of the Museum’s first website; a computerized collection management system was introduced; and a new climate control system went online as a major preservation accomplishment for Whitehall. The Museum received accreditation by the American Association of Museums in 1973. On March 22, 1979, Jean Flagler Matthews passed away, having served the Museum for 20 years.

In the 1980s, the Board of Trustees voted to eliminate admission charges for all organized school groups, which continues today. The first video biography of Henry Flagler was created and the Whitehall Lecture Series began. A two-room wing that wasn’t original to

Conservation and restoration projects continued, including the rewiring of Whitehall’s many sconces and chandeliers.
