President’s Letter June 2011 Dear Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors: As you read this Annual Report, I hope it inspires pride in all that was accomplished at the Museum during 2010, thanks to your generous support. Two thousand ten was a landmark year for both the Museum and the Town of Palm Beach. The year began with the 50th Anniversary of Whitehall’s opening as a public museum and ended with the opening celebration of the Town of Palm Beach’s Centennial Season - and the dedication of a statue of Henry Flagler, a gift to the Town from the Museum. On behalf of my fellow Trustees and the Museum staff, thank you for your continued support. The Museum’s 2010 winter exhibition New World Eden Artist-Explorers in the Amerian Tropics
Executive Director’s Report The 2010 Season marked the Golden Anniversary of the opening of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum to the public. After acquiring the defunct Whitehall Hotel in 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews set about creating a nonprofit corporation and restoring Whitehall so that it could be opened as a public museum. On February 6, 1960, she personally greeted more than 1,000 people who showed up that first day to see the amazing Beaux-Arts palace built by Henry Flagler in 1902. In conjunction with the Museum’s 50th Anniversary, the Palm Beach Daily News published a 12-page four-color tabloid about the Museum’s history and the Museum created a Special Event Cover, which was canceled with a specially designed postal cancellation on February 6th exactly 50 years to the day that the Museum opened to the public. Whitehall’s interiors, feel the cooler dryer air of the climate control system, walk through the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, or watch the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Museum grounds. Indeed, the Flagler Museum and its programs have come a long way over the first half century of its operation, proving just how farsighted Jean Flagler Matthews was to save Whitehall and to open it to the public.
Exhibitions In 2010 the Museum curated two exhibitions. The winter exhibition, “New World Eden: Artist-Explorers in the American Tropics,” focused on the late nineteenth century fascination with the New World tropics and its influence on art and design. A highlight of the exhibition was a display of Martin Johnson Heade’s tropical-theme paintings, the largest of which, “The Great Florida Sunset,” was commissioned and owned by Henry Flagler and is rarely exhibited. Another highlight was the amazing Tiffany & Co. “Orchid Vase,” which had not been exhibited outside California in over a century and which the public briefly had the opportunity to see up close only one other time since it was made for exhibition at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
school groups, making it possible for more than 4,000 students to visit the Museum each year as part of their fourth and fifth-grade curriculum. In addition to the general school tour program, for the 24th year the Museum hosted its Inter-generational Mentor Program for Art, Culture, and Technology (or IMPACT), pairing students from U. B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary and Grassy Waters Elementary with Museum Docents to develop the students’ creative writing skills.

The fall Exhibition, “Mizner Mediterranean: The Origins of Palm Beach Style,” was curated by the Museum in conjunction with Palm Beach’s Centennial Season. The distinctive look of Palm Beach architecture is recognized around the world and this exhibition explored the genius of renowned architect Addison Mizner, who created Palm Beach’s classic Mediterranean revival style and helped fashion the town into an alluring destination.
The West Room of the Museum has been described by critics as the best chamber music venue in South Florida. In its eleventh year, the Flagler Museum Music Series continued to draw critical acclaim and national attention with concerts by violinist Frank Almond, the Leipzig String Quartet, the Amelia Piano Trio, Intersection, and the American String Quartet. As a testament to the quality of the Series, four pieces from the 2010 Season were chosen for broadcast on National Public Radio’s Performance Today.
Programs and Member Events The programs for the 2010 Season included a wide variety of formats with something for every member of the family. Offerings ranged from a forum moderated by John Loring of Museum Directors from the Gilded Age House Museums of Newport, the Frick Collection, Vizcaya, the Huntington Library and Gardens, the Frick Art and Historical Center, and the Flagler Museum to lectures, concerts, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. For 30 years the Museum’s Members and Contributors have underwritten the cost of visiting the Museum for

The 26th annual Whitehall Lecture Series focused on popular entertainment during the Gilded Age with lectures on The Kid of Coney Island: The Rise of American Amusement Parks, Vaudeville: From Small-Time Acts to Ziegfield’s Follies, Illusions, Innovations, and Magical Sensations: The Great Magicians of the Gilded Age, Nickelodeon City: The Origins of the Movie Industry, and Oscar Wilde: Ambassador to the Aesthetic. And, because anyone can join the lectures live via the Internet and not only hear the lecturer but also see the slides presented, the potential size of the audience for these lectures is limitless. Open seasonally from Thanksgiving weekend through the Saturday before Easter, Café des Beaux-Arts has become ever more popular with Museum Members and visitors. The view from the Flagler Kenan Pavilion across Lake Worth and the tea fare served on Whitehall Collection™ china with Whitehall Special Blend™ tea - all within the beautiful surroundings of a Beaux-Art railway palace - is an incomparable experience.

There’s no better place to celebrate Valentine’s Day than at the Flagler Museum - a National Historic Landmark built as a wedding gift and homage to love - and the Museum’s Valentine’s Day Tea in the Café des Beaux-Arts this past year was more popular than ever among Museum Members and visitors.
engaged students in a re-enactment of Flagler’s arrival in Key West celebrating the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad. Following the activity, each child received their own copy of Kidnapped in Key West, a historical novel for kids based around the building of the Over-Sea Railroad.
In honor of Florida History Month, observed each year from March 15th through April 15th, the Museum works with a large group of children in an after-school activity that teaches them in a fun and engaging way a little about Florida history. The tradition of an Easter Egg Hunt and Egg Roll really took off in America when President Rutherford B. Hayes first invited children to the lawn of the White House in 1878. The Museum’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt continues this tradition and has become extremely popular. More than 650 people gathered at
The past decade has seen a number of catastrophic challenges to the survival of arts and culture organizations in the southeast. As a way of helping to meet those challenges, each of the past six years, the Museum has hosted Bluegrass in the Pavilion, a concert featuring the best Bluegrass groups in the country, with the proceeds going to support South Arts’ Gulf Coast Emergency Planning, the mission of which is to aid arts organizations and help artists prepare for and recover from disasters. In 2010, Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad and the Larry Stephenson Band gave an outstanding concert in the Museum’s Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Each year it seems more families decide to celebrate Mother’s Day by treating mother to the Mother’s Day Tea at the Museum’s Café des BeauxArts, and Mother’s Day in 2010 was no exception. The view of the West Palm Beach skyline across Lake Worth, the Whitehall Special Blend™ Tea, the scrumptious tea sandwiches, the Whitehall Collection™ China, and the beautiful Beaux-Arts interior of the Flagler Kenan Pavilion all combine to make Mother’s Day Tea at the Flagler Museum a very special experience. Middle school students love the idea of solving crimes and because most of the forensic techniques used to solve crimes today were developed during the Gilded Age, “Crime Investigation during the Gilded Age” has been the Museum’s most popular summer camp. Each summer, campers learn how to collect and evaluate fingerprints, how to test blood types, how to make casts of footprints, and how to do hair analysis - culminating in an exercise in which they use those skills to solve a mock crime.

Independence Day was one of the very few National Holidays celebrated during Henry Flagler’s lifetime and great fanfare was in order on that day. During Flagler’s life 20 versions of the American flag flew over our country as new states were added. The Flagler Museum celebrated Independence in 2010 by opening the Flagler Kenan Pavilion to Members at the Sustaining level and above. The Pavilion was decorated with the 20 versions of the American flag and Railcar No. 91 was festooned with red, white, and blue bunting. Leading up to the spectacular finale of fireworks over Lake Worth, Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor read the Declaration of Independence, which was followed by patriotic songs performed by the Boca raTONES while Members enjoyed ice cream and lemonade. The Museum celebrates Grandparents Day each year with activities designed to engage grandchildren in honoring their
grandparents and reminding us all that the Museum was established by a granddaughter who wanted to honor her grandfather and preserve an important part of Florida’s and America’s heritage. The year was rounded out with a tradition that is now a half century
old, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on the first Sunday in December. Hundreds gathered at the Museum to enjoy Whitehall’s Christmas decorations, hear the Music Room organ and the Drawing Room piano played, meet Santa Claus, listen to The Kings Academy sing Christmas carols in the

and upgraded. In 2010 the very large Grand Hall torchieres were completely rewired as were the West Terrace Lanterns. Perhaps the most interesting restoration news of 2010 was the discovery and restoration of the wrought-iron sconces from the east wall of Whitehall’s Courtyard. These sconces, probably made by Mizner Industries, were added during Addison Mizner’s 1925 redecoration of the Courtyard during the Hotel Era, when the stairs into the Courtyard from the Grand Hall were added.

Conservation and Restoration During 2010, the Museum was fortunate to receive nearly a quarter million dollars in grant funding from the county, state, and federal levels, as well as from a variety of private

grantors. The grant funding helped underwrite a variety of projects and programs, including: the development of a Spanish language audio tour, the construction of shelving for the Museum’s Research Library, conservation assessment of the Over-Sea Railroad drawings, and marketing, to name just a few. A list of the generous grantors in 2010 can be found at the end of this Report. Over the years, the many miles of electrical wiring throughout Whitehall is being steadily replaced
New air conditioners installed
The first public area of the Museum to be air conditioned was the West Room of the Hotel Addition, completed in 1996. After 14 years of service, those air-conditioning units were replaced with new energy efficient units that not only cool the space but reduce the humidity levels as well. The new AC units have the additional advantage of being even more durable than the older units, with the result that the Museum should realize both immediate savings in electrical costs and longterm savings in maintenance and replacement costs. control system had been operating for over a decade and was due for a major service. Happily, while the system required a lot of work, it was returned to such a high level of efficiency that the savings in electrical costs will offset the cost of the maintenance in the first year and we can reasonably expect the system to continue to provide very precise climate control for many years to come.
Collections and Acquisitions The Museum was fortunate in 2010 to add a number of important objects to its collection. Among them was: the suite of bedroom furniture original to Whitehall’s Blue Room, including a dressing table, a bureau, two night tables, and two small side chairs,
which came back to the Museum as a gift of Frances Fielding Lewis Beatty and William Henry Anthony Beatty in memory of Anne Kidder Beatty a beautifully restored brass marine clock engraved “FEC,” which was ordered by Henry Flagler in 1911 from the Chelsea Clock Co. - and, an extremely rare Florida East Coast Railway Bond Certificate issued to J. P. Morgan & Co. for $1,000,000 on June 23, 1909 and signed by J.P. Morgan, Jr. The Bond Certificate is particularly interesting because it is only one of two known examples and because it is one of the very limited series of bonds that, in essence, made the development of modern Florida possible. The Museum was honored to receive a number of awards in 2010, including: the School District of Palm Beach County, Gold Medalist, Partner in Education Award, the WFLX-Fox 29 First Place Award for Best Museum of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, the Florida Department of Education, Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award, and the Palm Beach Civic Association, Raymond J. Kunkel Award. As 2010 came to a close, the Town of Palm Beach opened its Centennial Season and the Museum was

pleased to play an important role in the opening of that very special Season with the gift, installation, and dedication, on December 11th of a statue of Henry Flagler on Royal Poinciana Way. The fact that the bridge terminating on Royal Poinciana is named for Henry Flagler, that it is the Town’s historic entrance
built by Henry Flagler, and that Royal Poinciana Way was originally named Flagler Avenue, all make the location perfectly appropriate for a statue of Henry Flagler. The Statue and installation were underwritten by a generous gift from Col. G. F. Robert Hanke, Vice President of the Flagler Museum and great grandson of Henry Flagler. Indeed, thanks to the Museum’s many Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors, 2010 was a year filled with excellent Museum programs, exhibitions, and events. It was a year that opened with the Museum Director John Blades’ interview for the Wealth TV show Palatial Passports

Remembering Jesse D. Newman Flagler Museum Trustee and civic leader Jesse David Newman passed away on March 26, 2010. He was 86 years old. Mr. Newman served as a Trustee of the Museum for 34 years. He was a graduate of St. John’s University and the St. John’s University School of Law in Queens, N.Y. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy. In 1951 Mr. Newman came to Palm Beach on vacation and stayed at The Whitehall Hotel, Henry Flagler’s historic home, soon to be Flagler Museum. Mr. Newman was a local business and community leader, participating in many, cultural and charitable organizations. For 29 years he served as president of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce. He also established several businesses including Jesse Newman & Associates, which he operated until his retirement in 2007. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife Helene, his daughter, Lori Newman Schwartz; a son, Robert J. Marin; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His many awards included: City of Hope Man of the Year, two Palm Beach Daily News Business Leadership Awards, the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce “One and Only” Award, March of Dimes FDR Award, B’nai Brith Humanitarian Award and the Worth Avenue Association’s Above and Beyond award. He was honored three times by the Town of Palm Beach with a proclamation of Jesse Newman Day.
Remembering Molly Wiley Henry Flagler’s grand niece, Mary Lily Flagler Lewis Wiley, affectionately known as Molly, of Richmond, Va., and Delray Beach passed away on May 28, 2010, in Richmond. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Wiley was the daughter of the late Lawrence Lewis and Louise Wise Lewis Francis. Born in St. Augustine, Molly, as she was known, grew up in Kirkside, the home built by Henry Flagler next to Flagler’s Memorial Presbyterian Church. Her mother Louise inherited Kirkside and Whitehall from her aunt Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, for whom Whitehall was built as a wedding gift. Molly had a special love for Whitehall, and gave 470 objects to the Museum when her grandmother Jessie Kenan Wise died in 1968. The collection of objects were from Henry Flagler’s homes of Kirkside in St. Augustine, Florida, Satanstoe in Mamaroneck, New York, and 39 of the objects were original to Whitehall. Some of the most notable include: the 18-karat gold tea service made by Tiffany & Co., Mary Lily Flagler’s silver from the Master Bedroom, a French mantel clock on display in the Master Bedroom, a Gustave Jean Jacquet oil painting “The Artist’s Mistress” on display in the Library, and the Oriental rug on display in the Colonial Chamber. Mrs. Wiley and her brother Lawrence Lewis Jr. established Flagler College in St. Augustine, created scholarships and endowments there, and for the last 10 years she was a trustee of the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust, based in North Carolina. She was an avid golfer winning several golf club championships. Mrs. Wiley is survived by two sons, six grandchildren, two stepsons and a stepdaughter.
