2011 Annual Report

President’s Letter June 2012 Dear Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors: My fellow Trustees and I very much appreciate your support in 2011. We hope this Annual Report inspires pride in all that was accomplished at the Museum during the year, as a result of your generous support. General attendance continued to grow in 2011 and throughout the year the Museum’s programs and exhibitions were very well attended. As you read this Annual Report you will find there were so many things and accomplishments throughout the year that were particularly noteworthy, but the Trustees and Staff of the Museum were especially honored by the Town of Palm Beach’s choice of the Museum as the location for Palm Beach’s All-Town Centennial Celebration. The Trustees and Staff of the Museum are committed to making the Flagler Museum better each year and insuring that it continues to be one of the best house museums in America. Your support has been, and will always be essential to that effort. We simply couldn’t do all that we do at the Museum each year without you. Thank you. Sincerely,

George G. Matthews, President Flagler Museum Board of Trustees

Museum Mission The Mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to restore and preserve Whitehall and its collections, and to research and interpret materials related to the life of Henry Flagler, as unique and important elements of Florida’s history and America’s Gilded Age.

Exhibitions The Museum’s 2011 winter exhibition, titled The Extraordinary Joseph Urban, was developed exclusively by the Museum staff and seen only at the Flagler Museum. As the architect of three of Palm Beach’s iconic buildings and a frequent winter visitor to Palm Beach, Joseph Urban holds a special place in the history of Palm Beach. Born in Vienna in 1872, Joseph Urban’s extraordinary career as an artist, designer, and

architect began when he was just 19 years old, leading him ultimately to Boston, New York, and Palm Beach. The Extraordinary Joseph Urban featured more than 150 objects, from set models to illustrations to furniture to building designs, all illustrating Urban’s diverse talents and long career. The Exhibition was awarded a gold medal by the Southeastern Museums Conference.

In conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition on the Over-Sea Railroad, the Museum published a special Centennial Edition of Last Train to Paradise, which was awarded a gold medal from the Independent Publishers Association.

Programs and Member Events In keeping with the Town of Palm Beach’s Centennial Year the Museum’s 2011 Whitehall Lecture Series focused on The Architects Who Designed Palm Beach’s Iconic Buildings with lectures on Joseph Urban, Schultze & Weaver, Addison Mizner, and Carrère and Hastings. Each lecture was webcast live and available worldwide via the Internet. In addition to the fully subscribed on-site lectures, about 10% of the audience for each lecture joined the lecture via the Internet, where they heard live audio, saw the same images the on-site audience saw, and were able to ask questions following the lecture. All Museum lectures are archived on the Museum’s website and available on-demand by anyone browsing the Internet. John Loring lectures on architect Joseph Urban. In its twelfth year, the Flagler Museum Music Series featured concerts by the Enso String Quartet, Ying Quartet, Alianza String Quartet, Storioni Trio, and Lincoln Trio. The Series continued to garner high praise and was again recognized for its quality when select performances were broadcast nationally on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.” As they have for more than half a century, visitors from around the world came to Whitehall to learn more about Florida, Palm Beach, and Henry Flagler’s amazing life. A grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services made the introduction of a new Spanish Language Audio Tour possible at the beginning of the year and a German Audio Tour at the end of the year.

The Museum’s programming throughout the year included something for every age and interest, from: Valentine’s Day Tea to Mother’s Day Tea, Grandparents Day activities to mentoring

programs for creative writing, Crime Investigation summer camp to the Easter Egg Hunt, Independence Day Celebrations to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Children’s Exhibit Activities to a special Whitehall Society Reception highlighting one of America’s most popular traditions, School Tours to Founder’s Day, a Bluegrass Concert to Holiday Evening Tours, and much more. In 2011, tickets for all of the Museum’s programs were made available for purchase on-line and almost immediately on-line purchases accounted for about a third of all program ticket sales. Conservation and Restoration Caring for 125,000 square feet of building and tens of thousands of objects, while remaining open to the public year ‘round, is a monumental endeavor. The major projects undertaken in 2011 included a four-month long restoration of the Courtyard, including the restoration of two iron sconces made by Mizner Industries and installed in the Courtyard in 1924, when Whitehall was operated for a single year as the Whitehall Club. When the large Drawing Room torchieres were disassembled for conservation treatment and pieces sent out to test the metal we had assumed all these years was silver, we were surprised to learn that in fact the metal was an amalgam of several metals that included aluminum. Apparently, the goal of coating the brass pieces of the torchieres with the very unusual amalgam was to produce the appearance of silver without the normal oxidation associated with silver. However, surprisingly, polishing the amalgam with silver polish would be exactly the wrong thing to do, as it degrades the

amalgam. Instead, left alone, the amalgam actually resists oxidation quite well, as it was designed to do. To date, no records have been found of any other fixtures of any place or period produced in this way. Other Curatorial projects for 2011

included: the construction of custom-made bookcases for the Museum’s Henry Flagler Harris Research Library, providing the Research Library with plenty of room for growth, and the restoration of a beautiful eighteenth century French clock made by Ridel

Physical Plant Projects By 2011 the Museum’s climate control system had been in service for more than 12 years and as a consequence the Museum invested a great deal of time and resources during the year in carefully checking every aspect of the system and replacing or maintaining parts as needed. By year-end, the climate control system was again in excellent working order and ready to continue reliable service for at least another decade. Aside from the work on the climate control system, work continued on development of an extensive preventative and routine maintenance program that will help to insure that Whitehall’s physical plant remains in excellent condition. However, there is always a surprise or two during the course of a year. In 2011 the Museum managed and recovered

from two such surprises. First, a massive 50-foot Ficus, located on adjacent property, fell into the Employee Parking Lot. Fortunately, while there was extensive damage to some cars and equipment, no one was injured. But, it took days to cut up and remove the massive tree. Second, a power surge cut through three one-inch cables at the Museum’s main electrical boxes, blowing off the door of the breaker box and shutting down the Museum for a few hours at the end of the day. However, by the next morning the breaker box had been replaced and the Museum was open to the public during normal hours.

Collections Gifts and Acquisitions The Museum is constantly seeking to repatriate objects original to Whitehall and to add to its collections important objects related to the Flagler story or indicative of the Gilded Age. Among the most notable objects added to the Museum’s collections in 2011 were three small paintings by William Aiken Walker given to the Museum by Jean S. Tailer and a suite of furniture original to the Blue Room, which was a gift from Frances Fielding Lewis Beatty and William Henry Anthony Beatty in memory of Anne Kidder Beatty. In addition to these wonderful gifts to the collection, the Museum was able to add a number of other important objects to the collection, including: nearly 100 illustrations and photographs of Carrère and Hastings buildings originally published in The American Architect during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a trunk made by Bigot of Paris in the late nineteenth century and owned by Mrs. H. M. Flagler (most probably Ida Alice Flagler), a perfectly restored brass marine clock engraved FEC, ordered by Henry Flagler in 1911 from the Chelsea Clock Co., and

K. Vanderbilt) won over Valkyrie III (campaigned by the Royal Yacht Squadron).

Leadership and Recognition The Trustees and staff take great pride in the important role that the Museum has played, and continues to play, in the Town of Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, the Great State of Florida, and the United States. The Museum was particularly honored in 2011 to host Palm Beach’s All-Town Centennial Celebration (on April 17 - one hundred years to the day since Palm Beach was incorporated), attended by thousands of Palm Beach residents and the Governor of Florida. The Museum was also privileged to assist the Town Building and Zoning Department during the Town’s centennial year with the preservation of a number of letters and documents from early in the Building Department’s history. The Museum produced framed facsimiles (in some cases digitally enhancing faded signatures), which

now hang in Town Hall, returning the originals to the Town in archival folders and containers that will help

to prevent further deterioration to those important documents.

In honor of Palm Beach’s Centennial, the Museum published Our Town, An In-Depth Pictorial History of Palm Beach in the form of a pop-up book. The Museum was also honored to receive three awards from the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC). The Extraordinary Joseph Urban exhibition was recognized as the best exhibition in the Southeast in 2011, in the most competitive budget category. The promotional materials related to the Urban exhibition received a silver award. And, the pop-up book, Our Town received an honorable mention because, as the emcee of the awards ceremony explained, though the book did not fit neatly into any of the book award categories, it was so exceptional the SEMC wanted to draw attention to it with an honorable mention.

Over the years the Museum has enjoyed extensive media coverage and such was the case in 2011. A partial list of the media coverage during the year includes articles and features in: Courier Magazine, Florida International Magazine, Florida Travel + Life, History: The Magazine for the History Channel, Florida Travel and Lifestyles, Palm Beach Arts Paper, Palm Beach Illustrated, The Coastal Star, The Lace Bulletin, The Miami Herald, Undiscovered Florida (a special insert in National Geographic Traveler), Ocean Drive Magazine, Florida Weekly Arts and Entertainment, Luxe Magazine, The Seniors Advocate, Elle Décor, Wealth TV, TV Asahi (Japan), and WLIS/WMDR Radio.

Thanks Whitehall. - Jeff Luft The whole house, (Joseph Urban) exhibit – innovative, absolutely gorgeous – and what a great man! - Philip & Julie Conn Lexington, KY Beautiful art and sculpture, fascinating history. This is way more interesting than so many other period museums! - Tripadvisor.com Reviewed July 20, 2011 This museum is one of the most tastefully furnished and decorated mansions we visited during our road trip through Florida.
