Flagler Museum Annual Report Celebrating the Extraordinary Legacy of Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913)

“What he has done you may see for yourself; and the children of your children will see still more clearly. The tramp of the marching years will not grind to dust his work, but make it the more solid – like the concrete of his viaducts and his buildings, which will grow harder, more like stone, with age. In no other place, in no other way, by no other man could the work have been done.”

Edwin Lefèvre on Henry M. Flagler Everybody’s Magazine, 1910

The Mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to restore and preserve Whitehall and its collections, and to research and interpret materials related to the life of Henry Flagler, as unique and important elements of Florida’s history and America’s Gilded Age.

President’s Letter Dear Members, Grantors:

Contributors,

Sponsors,

and

On behalf of all the Museum’s Trustees and Staff, thank you very much for your support throughout 2013. We hope you enjoy reading this summary of all that was made possible during the year through your generous support. Because 2013 marked the one hundredth year since the death of Florida’s greatest benefactor, the Museum’s programs throughout the year were designed to bring attention to Henry Flagler’s extraordinary and enduring legacy throughout Florida. When Henry Flagler came to Florida it was perhaps the poorest state in the Union, but all of that was about to change as Flagler undertook the fundamental work of building a transportation infrastructure, establishing the agriculture and tourism industries, and founding and building towns along the entire length of the State, making possible Florida’s astonishingly rapid growth. Today, Florida is the third largest state in the Union and its economy is larger than those of about 95% of the nations of the world. Two thousand thirteen was also notable for the fact that the Museum was the first and only Florida institution, and one of only a very few nationwide, to receive the prestigious Ross Merrill Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. The receipt of the Ross Merrill Award indeed puts the Museum in a rarified category among historic sites nationwide. Of the several tens of thousands of historic sites nationwide, the Flagler Museum is one of only four to have been honored with all three of the highest honors given to historic sites: Accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, designation as a National Historic Landmark, and presentation of the Ross Merrill Award. The Trustees and Staff of the Museum are extremely pleased with the many accomplishments and broad support received this past year. Thank you for your support, which has been, and will continue to be, so critical to the Museum’s success. Sincerely,

George G. Matthews, President Flagler Museum Board of Trustees

he Flagler Museum was one of only two venues in the world, and perhaps the most perfectly suited, where one could enjoy a rare opportunity to see so many paintings by Walter Gay. The Museum’s Winter Exhibition, Impressions of Interiors: Gilded Age Paintings by Walter Gay was organized by the Frick Art & Historical Center in Pittsburgh and was one of the Flagler Museum’s most popular exhibitions. The exhibition included 69 paintings and a selection of historical materials on loan from 40 public and private collections,

including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the museĂŠ d'Orsay, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Many of the paintings had not been publically exhibited since the 1930s.

Two thousand thirteen marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Florida’s most extraordinary citizen and greatest benefactor, Henry Morrison Flagler. In honor of this centennial, the Museum’s Fall Exhibition, Man of the Century: The Incomparable Legacy of Henry Morrison Flagler commemorated and illuminated the life and amazing accomplishments of the man who literally invented modern Florida. The centerpiece of this exhibition, along with hundreds of documents, photographs, and objects, was a Carrara marble bust of Henry Flagler commissioned by his wife and completed in Rome in 1901, a recent gift to the Museum from Mr. James G. Kenan, III. The bust now resides in Whitehall’s Library, atop a mahogany pedestal, in the room where it originally stood a century ago. In addition to the exhibition, the Museum produced a number of new products and programs to draw attention to Flagler’s tremendous legacy. As a way of drawing attention to Flagler’s vast property development throughout Florida, the Museum created the board game Flagleropoly.

To illustrate the overwhelming popularity and respect for Flagler in his own lifetime, the Museum produced a facsimile edition of the Memorial Book first printed in 1914 and presented to those who came from around the Nation to attend Flagler’s memorial service at the Royal Poinciana Chapel. The Memorial Book includes obituaries from around the State, the eulogy given at the Memorial Service, and a reproduction of an historic map of Florida illustrating the tremendous impact Flagler had on the State's

development. To help fourth and fifth graders understand the tremendous impact Flagler had in Florida's history the Museum produced a 16-page full color tabloid entitled Flagler's Legacy, which was distributed to more than 25,000 students in Palm Beach County. And, to remind everyone of just how much Florida’s economy is still dependent on the industries Henry Flagler established in Florida over a century ago, the Museum created special five dollar bills (they are legal tender) with Flagler’s image on the face and Whitehall’s facade on the reverse.

Programs and Member Events

E E

ach year the Museum is visited by tens of thousands of people from around the world who come to enjoy the Museum’s most popular program, the interpretation of Whitehall and its history via docent-led tours, audio tours, and printed self-guide brochures in four languages. In 2013 a German audio tour was added to the English, French, and Spanish tours already available, and a free Flagler Museum smartphone app, in both iPhone and Android versions created by the Flagler Museum staff, was introduced.

In 2013 the Flagler Museum’s Whitehall Society hosted a Bal Poudré (literally meaning powdered wig ball). The 2013 Bal Poudré raised funds for the Museum’s many children’s education programs.

The Flagler Museum is truly a tourist destination. About four out of five Museum visitors each year are visiting for the first time. Two thirds of the visitors are from outside Palm Beach County, and the majority of visitors are from outside Florida. In fact, in 2013 visitors from 61 countries visited the Museum. In addition to the year-round tour program, the Museum presented special programs for every age and interest: Valentine’s Day Tea, Grandparents Day, mentoring students creative

writing skills, Mother’s Day Tea, an annual Easter Egg Hunt, an Independence Day Celebration, an Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Children’s Exhibit Activities, School Tours, Founder’s Day, a Bluegrass Concert, Holiday Evening Tours, a Lecture Series, gallery talks, a chamber music series, and more. In its fifteenth season, the Flagler Museum Music Series featured concerts by Quartetto Bernini, Utrecht String Quartet, Schubert Ensemble, Vienna Piano Trio, and the Miró Quartet. The Series continued to garner critical acclaim and was again recognized for its quality when select performances were broadcast nationally on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. The Museum is very proud of the fact that over the last five years an average of five performances a year from the Music Series have been featured on Performance Today. In its ninth year, Audie Blaylock & Redline and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver performed for an enthusiastic

sold-out audience during the annual Bluegrass concert in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. The proceeds help small arts organizations and artists throughout the southeast prepare for and recover from natural disasters. The 2013 Whitehall Lecture Series focused on five, mostly lesser known, Presidents of the Gilded Age and the critical role each played in our history. Each lecture was available via a live webcast, which could be joined free-of-charge from anywhere in the world, and was captured and posted on the Gilded Age History Channel - a web-based portal created by the Museum featuring more than 100 video programs related to the Gilded Age. The Museum’s Independence Day Celebration in 2013 added a new tradition to the annual celebration. Eleven new citizens from eight countries took their oath of allegiance in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion as part of the Museum’s Independence Day Celebration.

A weekly organ demonstration was added to the Museum’s program offerings during the off-season of 2013. Each demonstration featured music of the period, much of it written specifically for Florida, which was chosen from

the Museum’s extensive archival collection. The Museum’s website continues to see more visitors each year. In 2013 about 130,000 people from 154 countries visited the

Whitehall’s Grand Ballroom, a Bal Poudré, the Flagler Museum’s Whitehall Society reinstituted that tradition by hosting the most elegant party of Palm Beach’s 2013 Season. Very popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bal Poudré parties (literally meaning powdered wig ball) were hosted in honor of American’s fascination with Marie Antoinette and its greatest hero George Washington. The Event featured cocktails in the Grand Hall, Dinner in the Grand Ballroom, dancing in the West Room, and drinks and relaxation on the Dock. The 2013 Bal Poudré raised funds for the Museum’s many children’s education programs. Going forward the Whitehall Society plans to continue hosting Bal Poudrés as biennial fundraisers for the Museum’s children’s education programs.

Conservation and Restoration

C C

aring for 125,000 square feet of building, eight and half acres, and tens of thousands of objects, documents, and ephemera, all while remaining open to the public year-round and presenting dozens of programs throughout the year, is definitely a constant challenge. However, in addition to those responsibilities, each year the Museum manages to take on several important conservation projects. In 2013 the major conservation projects undertaken included: restoring the Drawing Room to its original color, restoring the piano cases in both the Music and Drawing Rooms, conserving the Main Gate, restoring a Railroad Regulator No. 16 clock (now displayed in the History Room), assessing the Museum’s film collection, and following a long period of conservation, the return to the Museum of Canaletto’s very first painting of what became his best-known subject, the Piazza San Marco. The decades of dedication to restoring and conserving Whitehall and its extensive collections were recognized in the best way possible during the summer when Heritage Preservation and the American Institute for Conservation jointly presented the Museum with the Ross Merrill Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. This was the first time any organization in Florida had received this national award. There are no more prestigious awards among historic sites than the National Historic Landmark designation and the Ross Merrill Award. Of the tens of thousands of historic sites just one site in Florida and only a very few sites nationwide, have been so honored.

The painting was returned to Whitehall’s Music Room after a five-and-a-half year absence, during which the Canaletto was researched, conserved, and exhibited at the Museé Jacquemart-André in Paris. The painting was on loan during the second half of 2013 to the Yale University Art Gallery.

Physical Plant Projects

O O

ver the years, the Museum has made tremendous strides in restoring and improving every part of Whitehall’s physical plant. During the last two years, the operation of the Museum’s physical plant has largely transitioned from a focus on catching up on a backlog of major projects to an effort to develop and institute a routine and preventative maintenance program.

During the summer the Museum replaced the massive wood beams that form the lattice work atop the two pergola on the north side of Whitehall. Even in the demanding climate of South Florida the new properly treated and sealed cypress woodwork should survive for many decades.

T T

he Museum was very pleased to add a number of wonderful objects to its collection in 2013, chief among them, a Carrara marble bust of Henry Morrison Flagler, circa 1901 (a gift of Mr. James G. Kenan, III) and 169 pieces of Favrile art glass by Louis C. Tiffany, (a gift of Paula Gillies and

Elizabeth Kuhnke in loving memory of their mother, Nancy D. Polzin, and grandparents Florence and Paul H. Douglas). In addition, the Museum continued to add to its collections hundreds of pieces of ephemera related to the Flagler System of hotels and railroad, and Standard Oil history.

Leadership and Recognition

T T

he Trustees and Staff take great pride in the important role that the Museum continues to play in the Town of Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, the State of Florida and, as a National Historic Landmark, the Nation.

that have received all three of the highest honors that can be bestowed on an historic site: Accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, designation as a National Historic Landmark, and the presentation of the Ross Merrill Award.

In 2013 the Museum was honored with a number of awards, including the Ross Merrill Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. The Flagler Museum is the first and only institution in Florida to receive this prestigious award and one of only four historic sites nationwide

In 2013 the Flagler Museum hosted a meeting of the directors of Gilded Age historic sites from around the Nation and as has been the tradition for many years, the Museum hosted the Palm Beach Civic Association's Annual Meeting and the Mayor's Annual State of the Town Address.

The Museum continued to receive an impressive amount of local, national, and international media coverage throughout 2013 - on television, in newspapers, on the radio, and via the Internet. National and international media coverage included: American Fine Art Magazine, Antiques & Fine Art, [AAA’s] Going Places, Holiday & Lifestyle (German language travel magazine), Investor’s Business Daily, Le Soleil (French language publication), Town & Country, and USA Today. Of course, the recognition that the Museum values most is that of visitors from around the world. In 2013 Flagler Museum visitors continued to rank their visit among the very best museum visitor experiences in the Nation. In fact, no other house museum in the nation enjoys better online reviews.
