The Mission The mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to preserve, research, and interpret Whitehall, its associated collections, and materials related to the life of Henry Flagler, as unique and important elements of Florida’s history and America’s Gilded Age.
A Note of Thanks From the Museum’s President and Executive Director Dear Museum Friends, On behalf of the Museum’s Trustees and Staff, we thank you for your support throughout 2017. Your generosity continues to be essential in making possible the Museum’s many excellent programs, and we present this report to document our responsible stewardship of your gifts. Our focus in 2017 remained presenting the highest quality programs for our local, national and international audiences. The beautiful and spellbinding paintings included in our winter exhibition, Harem: Unveiling the Mystery of Orientalist Art, attracted 22,000 visitors. Our fall exhibition, Knights of the Air: Aviator Heroes of WWI garnered extremely high praise in our ‘comments book’ as visitors were reminded of the role that their own relatives had played in the Great War. Programs featuring stimulating lecturers and world-renowned musicians continued, supported by new programs that open Whitehall’s doors as wide as possible. Our new Pop-Up Programs and Pop-Up Shops demonstrate to visitors that fun is truly around every corner of the Museum. We are also working to remind local residents, through our new Neighbor Receptions, that we are open 12 months for family and friends to reconnect with Flagler’s glorious Gilded Age home. Flagler’s Spirit, which continues based on the generosity of donors like you and the generous spirit of Museum Staff and Docents, is serving individuals and organizations with free programs all year long.

Whether it is the glorious painted ceiling in the Grand Hall, the inviting fountain and lush plantings in the Courtyard, the marble, silk and crystal everywhere you look, the glorious view of the Intracoastal off our relaxing South Porch, the shining silver in our Dining Room, or even the one-of-a-kind daffodil color flowing through the enormous Master bedroom – we invite you to let your eyes be your guide. 2017 in Pictures
Public Programs and Education Highlights In 2017 the Flagler Museum continued to present excellent programming to visitors of all ages: • The winter exhibition, Harem: Unveiling the Mystery of Orientalist Art, featured paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures that explored the myths and realities of the harem. • In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I in 1917, the fall exhibition, Knights of the Air: Aviator Heroes of World War I, featured works of art, artifacts, and printed materials on loan from the private collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, and other private and public collections. In conjunction with Knights of the Air, a new Docent-led gallery tour program was introduced. The Museum provided free admission to all active duty and retired military each Wednesday. • The Café des Beaux-Arts continued to serve a delectable Gilded Age-style afternoon tea, having its most successful season to date. A 6% increase in sales included special packages offered in conjunction with Valentine’s Day, celebrated in the Cocoanut Grove, and Mother’s Day weekend.

• The Museum’s successful school tour program provided complimentary field trips to 4,436 students and teachers from schools in the area.

• The Kidnapped in Key West outreach program continued to serve over 1,000 students from multiple schools. Not only were students treated to interactive learning, but each student also received a copy of the book Kidnapped in Key West, a beloved children’s novel. • In February, the Museum hosted the 2017 Bal Poudré and Soirée Poudré. The evening began with cocktails in the Grand Hall, and continued with a sumptuous dinner in the Grand Ballroom. Guests continued to the Flagler Kenan Pavilion to join the Soirée Poudré, and enjoy entertainment and dancing. Funds raised support the Museum’s education programs for children. • The Museum also continued to offer the increasingly-popular guided tours of The Breakers. More than 1,000 visitors enjoyed the “House & Hotel” tours in 2017 through this wonderful collaboration.

• Summer-time Pop-Up events provided additional entertainment opportunities for visitors. These programs included performances by the Sunsation Quartet, on the South Porch, on six occasions through the summer. In May, the Pop-Up Programs included a plein air painting session in the Cocoanut Grove, and in September, croquet lessons were enjoyed by visitors in the Grove. • In December, 500 Holiday Evening Tour ticket-holders had the opportunity to enjoy a co-promotion discount at neighboring Sant Ambroeus restaurant.

Flagler’s Spirit The Flagler Museum continued to host Flagler’s Spirit events during 2017. This initiative provides unique opportunities for children and adults to visit Whitehall and experience it in new and exciting ways. In June and September, the Museum hosted clients and staff of Feeding South Florida for picnics in the Cocoanut Grove. In September, Whitehall was illuminated in orange in recognition of National Hunger Action Month. In July, the Museum donated school supplies to Red Apple Supplies. Our corporate partners and community provided very generous donations.
Neighbor Receptions
Flagler’s Spirit Update In February, 2018, the Flagler’s Spirit team provided a group tour and tea in the Café des Beaux-Arts for guests from The Lord’s Place in West Palm Beach.
In March and November, the Museum hosted Neighbor Receptions for residents of Palm Beach Towers and One Watermark. Our new friends mingled with staff, enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks in the Grand Hall, and reconnected with Whitehall. Thank you, neighbors!

Collections Acquisitions The Flagler Museum’s Archives acquired many fascinating documents in 2017 that help tell the story of Henry and Mary Lily Flagler, their families, and Henry Flagler’s business enterprises. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Museum was able to purchase two important meeting minutes books for the collection: Stockholders, Florida East Coast Railway Company, 1892-1920, and Directors, Florida East Coast Railway Company, 1917-1920. Documents such as these provide a wealth of information about the dayto-day operations, as well as long-term plans, of the FEC.
This wonderful herbarium was compiled by Mary Harkness Flagler, granddaughter of Henry Flagler, in the summer of 1911, when she was ten years old. The herbarium was generously donated by Betsy K. Matthews.
The Perfect Gift
In 2017, a collaboration between the Museum Store and the Curatorial Department led to the creation of a replica deck of FEC Railway playing cards originally dating from the early 20th century. The deck features 53 different images of the East Coast of Florida illustrating tourist attractions and scenic views along Henry Flagler’s railway. The gold-foil boxed playing cards are now available in the Museum Store!
Florida Architecture of Addison Mizner, a magnificent volume published in 1928 devoted to the work of this important architect who changed the look of Palm Beach, was donated by Deborah & Charles Royce.
