Courtyard Closes for Maintenance Whitehall’s Courtyard was closed during August and September as maintenance workers repainted the walls and the exterior window shutters. The multi-faceted project required a 45-foot lift to be hoisted above Whitehall and gently lowered into the Courtyard. Workers removed each shutter, some measuring up to 10 feet wide. Each was stripped of paint, cleaned, and repainted. The plants and historic light fixtures were covered while

the walls were pressure washed. Workers also resealed the exterior windows to prevent water leaks during heavy rainstorms. As the crew repainted the walls, hundreds of small decorative features had to be painstakingly hand painted to preserve the Courtyard’s historic appearance. Large equipment had to be lifted above historic Whitehall and placed directly on the Courtyard walkway.

T

he Flagler Museum’s Fall Exhibition “First Train to Paradise: The Railroad That Went to Sea” is open from October 18th through January 8, 2012. The exhibition tells the exciting story of the construction of the Over-Sea Railroad to Key West.

Railroad, was the final link extending the system from Jacksonville to Key West. Upon completion, the project was hailed as “the Eighth Wonder of the World,” and it remains the most ambitious engineering feat ever undertaken by a private individual.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the railroad’s completion, the exhibition brings to life the story of the Over-Sea Railroad through photographs, artifacts, firsthand accounts, and historic film footage. Numerous documents and photographs from the extensive Flagler Museum Archives, the repository for tens of thousands of documents relating to construction of the Over-Sea Railroad, are being revealed to the public for the first time.

ell before the completion of the Panama Canal, Henry Flagler recognized the potential commercial importance of the deep water port at Key West, as a major link between the United States and Cuba, South America, and the Far East. Flagler set his sights on linking the Keys to the mainland United States by rail, thus creating a direct and rapid route from Key West to the Northeast for the transport of both cargo and tourists, which changed Florida, and the country, forever. The project was described by former U.S. Secretary of State, and Nobel Prize winner, Elihu Root as “... second only

to the Panama Canal in its political and commercial importance to the United States.” Skeptics who doubted it could be done dubbed the project “Flagler’s Folly,” but Flagler and his employees pressed forward with the seemingly impossible undertaking. Despite three major hurricanes, difficult terrain, intense heat, mosquitoes, and disease, the building of the Over-Sea Railroad proceeded. The tracks were in continuous use until severely damaged by the infamous 1935 Labor Day hurricane, and the decision was made not to rebuild. Despite the hurricane’s force Flagler’s concrete bridges survived and were soon incorporated into the Overseas Highway. Remnants of the original bridges still stand, a hundred years later, as testaments to the achievements of Flagler and his engineers.

F

irst Train to Paradise recounts the stories of the dedicated workers who risked their lives, and sometimes lost them, to see Flagler’s dream come to fruition. The unique holdings of the Flagler Museum Archives make it possible to examine in detail the experiences of these men and their families. The exhibition highlights the moving and personal stories of FEC employees such as William H. Sanders, engineer of the motor launch Palm, who was swept to sea with more than 150 other men from Quarterboat No. 4, a floating dormitory tethered off Long Key. The story of this major hurricane on October 18, 1906, and Sanders’s dramatic rescue at sea is remarkable. The Over-Sea Railroad eventually extended 156 miles from Miami to Key West, much of it over open water via 42 bridges connecting more than 100 islands. Despite extreme adversity and expense, the dream became a reality, and Henry Flagler was greeted by thousands of Floridians when the first passenger train pulled into Key West on January 22, 1912. Flagler’s private Railcar No. 91, which was part of that train, is on permanent display in the Museum’s Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Memorabilia related to this grand celebration, including a gold telegram presented by proud employees to Henry Flagler, are featured in the exhibition. “First Train to Paradise: The Railroad That Went to Sea” will open from October 18, 2011 through January 8, 2012. Curated by Tracy Kamerer, the Flagler Museum’s Chief Curator, the exhibition chronicles the project’s development from sketches to reality, capturing the greatest achievement of one of America’s titans of industry. The exhibition is sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase.

Summer Conservation Projects Conservation efforts at the Flagler Museum are ongoing. This summer numerous conservation projects have been undertaken on the Museum’s collections.

clock’s claw feet stand atop a green marble base. The clock’s movement was overhauled, the case was cleaned and repaired, and it is now in perfect working order.

An elegant eighteenth century French clock was recently conserved and has been installed on the mantel in Whitehall’s Library. This clock, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Amar, might be the oldest clock in the Museum’s collection. Made ca. 1795 by Ridel of Paris, the gilt bronze clock is flanked by large serpentine scrolls and branches; crested by a basket overflowing with flowers, fruit, and leaves; and has a sunburst pendulum bob. The

Whitehall’s original pipe organ also recently underwent extensive restoration to keep it in top condition. The 1,249-pipe organ was made by J.H. & C.S. Odell, founded in New York City in 1859. The two keyboards were removed and rebushed; stopped pipes were repacked; the leather on the pipe stoppers was replaced; and new electric wiring was installed. The restored Odell is ready once again for its annual public recital

at the Christmas Tree Lighting, on December 4, 2011. Two elegant wrought iron exterior light fixtures, probably made locally by Mizner Industries, were recently located and restored to Whitehall’s Courtyard. In 1924 Whitehall was sold and became the short-lived Whitehall Club, a predecessor to the Whitehall Hotel. The Club hired local architect Addison Mizner to redesign Whitehall’s Courtyard for use by the private club’s members. Mizner created the cross plan that is still evident in the Courtyard today, and added French doors with stairs as an entrance from the Grand Hall. Mizner placed two wrought iron light fixtures flanking the doors that resemble pairs of torches. These iron sconces deteriorated over time and were eventually removed. The fixtures were recently located and restored, and are now reinstalled in their original locations in Whitehall’s Courtyard. The clock by Ridel of Paris is now on display in Whitehall’s Library.

Surveying the Museum’s Collections Conservationists survey the condition of furniture in the Drawing Room.

T

he Flagler Museum recently carried out two important collections surveys in order to assess their condition and assist with planning for future conservation efforts. Members of the Museum’s Curatorial Team worked with professional conservator Mary Studt, of Richmond Conservators of Works on Paper, to assess a sampling of its important collection of approximately 1,300 drawings for the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, known as the Over-Sea Railroad. These fascinating drawings and blueprints, produced between 1904 and 1912, depicting bridges, geological surveys, and equipment, were used during the construction of the Over-Sea Railroad. The working drawings have been rolled for more than a hundred years, and are extremely brittle and fragile. Ms. Studt and the Museum’s staff assessed a sampling of the collection, in order to determine their condition and make conservation and preservation recommendations. Museum staff were also trained in basic conservation techniques, such as cleaning, mending, and flattening.

The rolled drawings will be treated and flattened by Museum staff, making them accessible for research and display. Information learned during the assessment will guide the Museum’s conservation efforts and will assist in the design of proper storage for the drawing collection. The assessment was made possible by a Preservation Assistance Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Significantly, the project was designated by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a “We the People” project, meaning that the OverSea Railroad collection is seen by the NEH as having national historic importance. The conservation of these historic drawings is especially timely, as Florida will celebrate the centennial of the completion of the OverSea Railroad in January 2012.

T

he Museum is also currently carrying out a detailed conservation survey of the Museum’s furniture collection, numbering more than 400

pieces on display and in storage. This survey will take place over six weeks during the summer and fall of 2011, and the spring of 2012. The Museum’s furniture is a significant part of the Museum’s collection, consisting of objects dating primarily from the 1600s to the 1920s. The survey will consist of a thorough examination of every piece of furniture, evaluation of its condition, and recommendations for conservation treatments. The furniture survey will provide the Flagler Museum with an important planning tool to organize conservation treatments and priorities, evaluate needed resources, and develop public exhibitions. F. Carey Howlett is conducting the survey. Mr. Howlett is a conservator and consultant with 35 years of experience, who has served as the Director of Conservation for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and has led projects at Westover Plantation, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Museum Receives Grants The Flagler Museum recently received several grants. The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded the Museum a Conservation Project Support Grant to conduct a detailed survey of more than 400 pieces of the furniture collection. Furniture and decorative arts are critical interpretive elements for visitors to Whitehall and the survey will provide an important planning tool to organize conservation treatments, evaluate needed resources, and develop public exhibits for these objects. The Museum has also received a General Program Support Grant for 2011-

2012 from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs as well as a grant for 2011-12 Marketing and Cultural Programming from the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council. Each of these grant awards came as a result of a highly competitive process in which the Museum’s application was reviewed by a grant panel and received an exceptionally high score. The Museum’s Conservation Project Support Grant was the only one awarded in the State of Florida.

Museum Honors Jean Flagler Matthews During Founder’s Day Each year on June 5th the Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, and Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. This year more than 1,600 people visited the Museum, and enjoyed a self-guided tour of Whitehall, viewed the permanent collection of art and objects related to the Gilded Age, and climbed aboard Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91. Mrs. Matthews learned Whitehall was for sale after the corporation that had been operating the hotel went bankrupt in 1958. She purchased the property and established the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum as a private non-profit corporation on June 5, 1959. Founders Day is sponsored by The Palm Beach Post.

Decking the Halls of Whitehall Throughout the holiday season Whitehall’s first floor is decorated in traditional Gilded Age splendor. The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Evening Tours are family traditions not to be missed. On December 4th the Museum will host a special Christmas-themed lecture. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., Nancy H. Marshall will discuss Clement Clark Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and how a bedtime story written nearly 200 years ago guided American Christmas traditions from the late 19th century to present. Nancy H. Marshall is the author of “The Night Before Christmas: A Descriptive Bibliography of Clement Clarke Moore’s Immortal Poem.” She is a retired Dean of University Libraries at The College of William and Mary. The lecture is sponsored by Harris Private Bank. After the special Christmas lecture, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting events will begin at 3:00 p.m. The 16-foot tall Grand Hall Christmas Tree with its historically accurate trimmings is the center of

Whitehall’s holiday celebrations. The event will include holiday music played on Whitehall’s original 1,249 pipe J.H. & C.S. Odell & Co. organ, and the 1902 Steinway art-case grand piano in the Drawing Room. This is the only opportunity during the year that visitors have to hear these majestic instruments. Children can also meet Santa Claus in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Visitors may enjoy a special choir performance in the Courtyard and holiday refreshments in the West Room. The event culminates with Henry Flagler’s youngest descendants lighting the Grand Hall Christmas Tree. The Museum continues a tradition of giving a box of Animal Crackers to children as they leave Whitehall. In 1902, the same year Whitehall was built, the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) began

attaching a string to their colorful circus boxes so they could be used as Christmas tree ornaments. Admission to the Tree Lighting is free with Museum admission. Visitors are invited to experience a Gilded Age Christmas while touring Whitehall during the Holiday Evening Tours. Tours begin December 17th. Visitors will discover the origins of American Christmas traditions, and have a rare opportunity to see Whitehall by the glow of the original 1902 light fixtures. Every visitor will receive a traditional Christmas cracker following the tour. A choral group will sing Christmas carols while holiday refreshments are served. The Museum Store will be open for Holiday shopping. Visit the Museum’s website, or call (561) 655-2833 for ticket information.
