Bust of Caesar Augustus

D

uring the Gilded Age Ceasar Augustus, Rome’s first emperor, was an historical figure much admired by American leaders. Copies of the statue of Augustus, better known as Augustus of the Prima

Porta which was unearthed in the early 19th century, were often found in one form or another in grand American homes and public buildings. Certainly, this was true of Whitehall where a life-size bust of Augustus is prominently displayed in the Grand Hall.

as a society of great artistic and aesthetic achievement. Gilded Age American leaders identified with Augustus’ aspiration to elevate society and thus a bust of Augustus became part of the symbolism often incorporated into great homes and civic structures of the period.

Augustus was admired by Americans for transforming Rome, from a society known for its brick and mortar buildings and engineering feats, to the Rome of marble monuments and great civic structures we think of today. Augustus accomplished this transformation in part by claiming a connection to Apollo and his Muses of arts and literature. Indeed, Augustus incorporated Apollonian images into his breast plate, symbolizing his vision for Rome

In the case of Whitehall, the connection with Apollo the Sun God is evidenced in the design of the facade, which is evocative of a temple to Apollo. Whitehall faces the rising sun and historically was appropriately located in a coconut grove, representing the natural or Bacchanalian environment one would expect to find surrounding a temple to Apollo. Even the lion heads on the massive bronze doors of Whitehall are ancient symbols of the sun.

Museum Receives Prestigious National and State Awards

T

he Flagler Museum was recently honored with a major national award – The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC)/Heritage Preservation 2013 Ross Merrill Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. The Museum submitted a lengthy nomination detailing its 54 years of commitment to its collections and the preservation of Whitehall and the Awards Committee unanimously agreed that “the nomination was excellent and that the award is well deserved.” The Flagler Museum is the first Florida organization so honored since this award was established in 1999. The Ross Merrill Award is presented annually to an organization in North America that has been exemplary in the importance and priority it has given to conservation concerns and in the commitment it has shown to the preservation and care of its cultural property within the context of its broader mission.

Past recipients have included Colonial Williamsburg Foundation; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Central Park Conservancy; The Henry Ford Museum; and Shelburne Museum. The Flagler Museum has also been recognized by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation with its highest award in two categories. The Centennial edition of Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean received an Outstanding Recognition in the Preservation Education/Media category, the fourth award this publication has received. The Museum was also recognized with an Outstanding Recognition in the Organizational Achievement category for its Celebration of the Centennial of the Over-Sea Railroad with important collections preservation and dozens of programs and outreach activities. The Florida Trust’s Awards Ceremony was held at its Annual Conference in St. Augustine in May.

Henry Flagler’s Legacy

T

wo thousand thirteen marks the centennial of the end of Henry Flagler’s extraordinary life. In honor of Henry Flagler’s amazing and enduring legacy in Palm Beach and Florida, the Flagler Museum is celebrating that legacy through a variety of special projects throughout the year. In January 2013, the Flagler Museum began posting all mail with a Flagler Legacy postage meter imprint. All mail leaving the Flagler Museum during the year will have this special postal imprint commemorating the life of Florida’s greatest benefactor. In February 2013, the Flagler Museum hosted a Bal Poudré at Whitehall, one hundred and ten years after the first Bal Poudré took place in Palm Beach. Following a cocktail reception in Whitehall’s Grand Hall, guests enjoyed an elegant dinner in the Grand Ballroom, an After-Dinner Dance in the West Room, and a waterfront

VIP lounge on the Flagler Museum dock. Proceeds from the event will help underwrite the Museum’s exceptional education programs and free school tours for more than 4,000 students. The Flagler Museum has published a facsimile reproduction of the Henry Morrison Flagler memorial book. The original memorial book

was distributed to guests attending the memorial service held at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in March 1914. The book includes eulogies and newspaper articles from around the nation highlighting the impact that Henry Flagler had during his life as a founding partner of Standard Oil and Florida developer.

Henry Flagler (white arrow points to Flagler) was greeted by more than 10,000 people on his arrival in Key West, January, 22, 1912

The Flagler Museum, along with The Palm Beach Post, has produced a Newspapers In Education tabloid titled “Flagler’s Legacy”. This 16-page color tabloid outlines Henry Flagler’s impact on the development of the state of Florida and his enduring legacy in Palm Beach County. The tabloid has been distributed to more than 25,000 4th and 5th grade students in Palm Beach County. The Flagler Museum is developing a Flagler’s legacy app for use on smartphones and tablet devices. The content will employ maps, photographs, text and contact information for a variety of sites to inform users about Henry Flagler’s impact on the development of the state and his legacy throughout Florida, the Bahamas, and Cuba. In May the Flagler Museum finished the restoration of Whitehall’s Drawing Room to the original French gray color. The Drawing Room is the room most closely associated with Henry Flagler’s wife, Mary Lily, and Flagler invested more personal time and effort into the design and decoration of the room than any other at Whitehall.

The Flagler Museum’s 2013 Fall Exhibition will feature Flagler’s legacy, providing visitors with a detailed description of Flagler’s impact on the development of Florida, and the creation Palm Beach as the resort destination that it is today. The Fall Exhibition will be on view from October 15, 2013 to January 5, 2014.

Store product that will introduce a family-friendly and fun way to learn about Henry Flagler’s enduring legacy in Florida, a new permanent monument to Florida’s greatest benefactor, and the receipt of a gift of a very important object that was commissioned and owned by Henry Flagler. The object will return to Whitehall this summer.

Additional Flagler legacy projects, to be announced later in the year, include a new creative Museum

Drawing Room Restored

W

hen the Drawing Room was restored in the late 1990s, it was mistakenly believed that the original color scheme was warm beige and soft pink. The recently

completed restoration of the case of the Drawing Room’s Steinway & Sons Model B grand piano and new research has revealed that the Drawing Room was originally light gray in color.

The piano restoration project provided the critical evidence needed to determine the correct color of the Drawing Room walls (see Inside Whitehall, Winter 2013). Suspecting that the Drawing Room

The Drawing Room, in transition from beige to French gray. walls and the piano case were painted to match, the Museum’s Curatorial staff researched early descriptions of the Drawing Room for further evidence. Barr Ferree, in American Estates and Gardens (1904), described the room in detail: “The grand salon [Drawing Room] is on the right of the hall, corresponding to the library. It is Louis XVI in style, and is a sumptuous apartment in French gray, the walls paneled in gold and gray brocaded silk. It contains a beautiful mantel of white statuary marble; the ceiling has decorated medallions; the portieres are richly embroidered, and the furniture is elaborate and costly.” Ferree’s description provided important clues about how the room originally looked, and clearly supported the theory that the piano case and walls matched in color, which the black and white

photographs of the period couldn’t confirm. Several others sources also commented upon the gray color of the piano, which was said to match the walls. This was a surprising discovery, as gray would have been an unusual color for a Frenchstyle salon. A writer for the New York Herald in 1902 commented on the unique color scheme: “It is treated in a delicate shade of gray and silver, instead of the usual white and gold…The side walls are arranged in panels, and finished with a gold and gray silk brocatelle…A grand piano, in gray and silver, to correspond with the treatment of the room, has an artistic painting on the inner lid, representing music.” The Museum commissioned cross-section paint microscopy, the results of which corresponded with the historic descriptions and provided further evidence that

the piano case and walls were originally painted the same warm French gray. A just-completed project has restored the Drawing Room’s walls to their original

color, which, in combination with the original aluminum decorations, recreates the visually stunning and completely unique effect the Drawing Room originally had when it was completed in 1902. This important project was generously funded by grants from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust and The Fortin Foundation of Florida, Inc.

Bluegrass in the Pavilion

O

n April 13th, Audie Blaylock & Redline and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver performed at the 9th Annual Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert. With about 450 people in attendance, it was the Museum’s best-attended bluegrass concert. With over 35 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award nominations, and are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Doyle Lawson received two nominations in the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards held in Nashville on October 28, 2011, with fellow nominees including such country giants as George Strait and Carrie Underwood. Lawson also won two IBMA Awards, and was recently heralded by journalist Craig Havighurst as “one of music’s lions...” Audie Blaylock & Redline are still celebrating their album, I’m Going Back to Old Kentucky (A Bill Monroe Celebration) that previously made its debut at #1 on the Bluegrass Music Profiles Top 10 Albums in July 2011, and hit #1 on the Bluegrass Today’s Weekly Song Chart. All proceeds benefit the South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions.

Film Assessment Completed

T

he Flagler Museum recently carried out an assessment of the film-based collections in the Museum’s Archives, which was funded by a Preservation Assistance Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. A film and photography conservator worked on-site in the Archives this spring to examine a sampling of more than 4,000 separate items of film stock, including 16mm film, video, negatives, and transparencies. Most of the film-based collections have suffered deterioration due to age or instability, and currently some of the film and video cannot be viewed due to condition problems or outdated formats. The motion picture collection includes subjects related to the Flagler Museum’s mission, such as the Florida East Coast

and appropriate storage; transition materials that are deteriorating to a more permanent and consistent format; and to begin the process of making the fragile film stock more accessible for research, display, and publication. The project has also provided guidance on both stabilizing and re-formatting the Museum’s film stock, which will result in greater accessibility through digitization.

Railway, Cuba, and Florida history. The negative and transparency collection includes subjects such as Henry Flagler, the Flagler and Kenan families, Whitehall, and the Florida East Coast Railway. The content of these materials is highly significant for both regional and national historical research. The film stock illustrates some of the most important Gilded Age figures, events, and architecture including: Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad from Miami to Key West, opened in 1912; the 1928 Hurricane, the worst in Florida’s history; Henry Flagler’s hotels, which established tourism as Florida’s most important industry; early footage of Whitehall as a Museum; and the Russell T. Joy Collection, donated by the family of Whitehall’s organist and musical director, which documents life in Florida and Cuba. The project’s goals were to provide the Curatorial staff with the necessary information to plan for safe

Museum Awarded Foundation Grants

T

he Flagler Museum recently received several grant awards that will greatly improve its ability to educate the public about Henry Flagler, Florida’s history, and America’s Gilded Age. Two generous grants were given by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. The first will fund the upcoming Driveway Renovation Project, a major capital improvement for Whitehall. The second grant provided substantial support for the painting of the Drawing Room.

The ongoing generosity of these funders has made it possible for the Museum to continue to meet its important mission of preserving, researching, and interpreting Whitehall and its associated collections.

Docent Training

T

he Flagler Museum’s Docent Training program has been restructured as a twoweek course designed to prepare volunteers to interpret the life and legacy of Henry Flagler, Florida history, and America’s Gilded Age, during a rigorous course of study. Candidates will be expected to attend class each day and cover topics of interest such as contextual history, tour management skills, and job-specific training, achieve progressive benchmark standards, and participate in shadow training with current Docents. Upon completion of the course, volunteers will be assigned to daily tours, special group tours, and Museum events. As volunteers, Flagler Museum Docents provide at least 75 hours of service annually, and participate in all-staff meetings and on-going training throughout the year. In appreciation for their volunteer

service, Docents enjoy free admission to the Flagler Museum, a 10% discount in the Museum Store, a subscription to Inside Whitehall,

and an invitation to the biennial Staff Recognition Dinner.
