Collections Spotlight Two new exhibit cases have been unveiled in Whitehall’s second-floor Breezeways, providing the opportunity to showcase recent additions to the collection and rarely-seen treasures. The inaugural displays include new archival acquisitions made possible by generous donors. Featured objects will change regularly, providing the opportunity to view something new and interesting during every visit. One display features a touching letter from “Brother Tom” to “Sister Bess,” dated October 5, 1910, written by an unidentified employee of the Florida East Coast Railway working on the OverSea Railroad. In his letter, Tom described life at the Pigeon Key work camp and the first anniversary of the devastating 1909 hurricane in the Keys. The letter was a gift to the Museum from Gregg Gilden.

The other case holds the 1887 to 1897 minutes book from the Atlantic and Western Railroad Company of Florida, a predecessor railroad to the Florida East Coast Railway. The book is open to minutes from a significant meeting held on April 4, 1896 in St. Augustine, when the Board of Directors (including Henry Flagler and his son, Henry Harkness Flagler) voted to consolidate with the newly-formed FEC Railway. This Museum purchase was made possible with funds from an anonymous donor.

Fall Exhibition Knights of the Air: Aviator Heroes of World War I October 17 - December 31, 2017

This romantic painting of a pilot was created by American artist and illustrator Frank Tinsley. Collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, the Flagler Museum will present an exhibition honoring the daredevil pilots who risked everything for the cause at the dawn of aviation. Knights of the Air: Aviator Heroes of World War I, the first museum exhibit devoted to the image of the World War I pilot-hero, will be presented at the Flagler Museum from October 17 to December 31, 2017. The exhibition will showcase more than one hundred works of art, artifacts, photographs, and printed materials related to these brave men and their legacies. While much is known about the history of the Great War, those fighting in the trenches often remained nameless, their stories not widely told at the time. Wartime aviators, however, quickly became popular heroes. As a result of great interest in the new field of aviation, and the sheer danger their missions posed, written accounts and photographs of the pilots were widely featured in newspapers and magazines, and many published their own dramatic personal accounts. Knights of the Air celebrates the daring risk takers who propelled the world of aviation forward, solidifying the image of the aviator as a heroic symbol and leaving a lasting legacy.
