German Language Audio Tour Now Available German-speaking visitors are now able to take an audio tour of Whitehall in their native language. The comprehensive, 32-stop audio tour was funded by generous grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and the VISIT FLORIDA Small Business Partners Grant Program. The German audio tour is the last phase of a three-year expansion of the audio tour system that includes translating the Museum’s tour into Spanish (Jan. 2011), French (Jan. 2012), and now German. The German audio tour will increase the Museum’s accessibility among a diverse audience using audio wand technology. Executive Director

John Blades remarked “the audio tour translations will dramatically improve the visitor experience among international visitors to the Flagler Museum.” Audio tours are included with general admission. The audio translations will also be used in virtual tours available on the Flagler Museum’s website and in foreign language smart phone apps. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.

Saturday, April 13, 2013 3:00 p.m. (Doors open at 2:30 p.m.) Tickets $30 The 9th Annual Bluegrass in The Pavilion concert will continue the tradition of bringing the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida. In 2013, Audie Blaylock and Redline and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver will perform at this National Historic Landmark. All proceeds from the concert benefit South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions. With over 35 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award nominations, and are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the

Year. Doyle Lawson received two nominations in the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards held in Nashville on October 28, 2011, with fellow nominees including such Country giants as George Strait and Carrie Underwood. Lawson also won two IBMA Awards. Of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s performance at the August 2011 IBMA Awards Press Conference, which garnered three standing ovations from a soldout crowd in Nashville, Havighurst wrote: “There was no question who was going to close the show. Doyle Lawson is one of music’s lions at this point, and when he came out in perhaps the most beautiful western jacket I’ve ever seen... he was a holy vision. ... When DLQ, in quartet mode, nailed the final chorus of the a cappella gospel song ‘He Made It All Right,’ I swear we were mainlining the holy spirit. You know

how the word awesome gets overused and misused? Here’s where it applies.” Born in El Paso, Texas, into a family whose roots go back to the hills of Virginia and Tennessee, Audie learned to play guitar and sing with his parents and siblings, and went on to play locally in the Lansing, Michigan area where he grew up. In 1982, at age 19, Audie Blaylock joined Jimmy Martin and The Sunny Mountain Boys and spent nine years on the road learning the craft of Bluegrass from one of the music’s first-generation legends. Audie Blaylock has performed with some of Bluegrass music’s most distinguished acts over the years including the great Jimmy Martin and Rhonda Vincent & The Rage as well as doing session work that earned him a Grammy® nomination for Best

Bluegrass Album and an IBMA nomination for Recorded Event of the Year for ”A Tribute to Jimmy Martin: The King of Bluegrass.” This group project included Audie Blaylock on guitar and vocals along with a stellar lineup of musicians including former Sunny Mountain Boys J.D. Crowe, Paul Williams, and Kenny Ingram. He has also performed with the legendary Red Allen, The Lynn Morris Band and songwriting great Harley Allen. Audie Blaylock and Redline had the honor of being nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year award in both 2005 and 2006.

The Whitehall Society hosts a Bal Poudré Henry and Mary Lily Flagler hosted the first Palm Beach Bal Poudré in 1903, which was described in the press of the day as “one of the most sumptuous social affairs ever attempted south of Washington.” On Saturday, February 23, 2013, over a century later, Whitehall was once again home to the Bal Poudré. Powdered wigs adorned, guests congregated to further the Whitehall Society’s mission to cultivate support and patronage of a new generation of residents of the Palm Beach area who have an interest in arts and culture, history, architecture, and the preservation of Whitehall. Special thanks to Honorary Chairwomen Lesly Smith & Danielle Hickox Moore and Jean

Matthews & Christina Macfarland. And, to Chairwomen Susan Malloy, Sterling McCracken, Nicole Munder, and Tracy Smith. Upon arrival, couples’ photos were taken before they were ushered to cocktail hour in the Museum’s Grand Hall. Guests then enjoyed a lavish three-course meal in the Grand Ballroom, the room the 1903 Bal Poudré took place in. “Newly discovered historic film” of Henry Flagler’s original ball was shown to great fanfare. The night culminated in the West Room, Lake Room, West Terrace, and Dock, which was transformed for the night into a VIP lounge on the water. Patrons enjoyed live entertainment and a powdered wig photo shoot station.

Flagler Museum Music Series Hailed as “Cultural Treasure” The 2013 Flagler Museum Music Series concluded its 14th Season on March 5th. Five groups of musicians graced Whitehall’s West Room this year, all leaving the crowd in awe and music critics in admiration. Traveling from Italy to play exclusively for the Flagler Museum, Quartetto Bernini opened the 2013 Series with a powerful performance. The Palm Beach Daily News wrote, “Exclusive Quartetto Bernini appearance well worth waiting for.” The Utrecht String Quartet was descibed by the Palm Beach ArtsPaper as having “approached [the piece] with fresh playing. The rhapsodic melodies appeared second nature in their bowing. It was a fine interpretation, almost dreamlike at times in its delivery....” The Schubert Ensemble’s rendition of pieces by Gustav Mahler, Mozart, and Schumann were “played beautifully and intensely, without holding

back.” (Joseph Youngblood, Palm Beach Daily News) The Vienna Piano Trio wowed critics, as Rex Hearn of Palm Beach ArtsPaper remarked the Trio “polishes [the] program to gold.” For the final concert of the Series, the critically acclaimed Miró Quartet contributed a magnificient grand finale, described as possessing a “bold approach [that] shines in Flagler’s Music Series.” (Márcio Bezerra, Palm Beach Daily News) Márcio Bezerra of the Palm Beach Daily News offered maybe the most glowing of compliments when he wrote in his review of the Miró Quartet, “In the past decade or so, the Flagler Museum’s Music Series has established itself as a cultural treasure — we can only wish it would present more than its current lineup of five concerts.“

Giovanni Antonio Canal (called Canaletto), Piazza San Marco, Looking East, painted ca. 1722.

Canaletto Returns to Whitehall An important and rare early painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known simply as Canaletto, hangs once again in Whitehall’s Music Room after a five-and-a-half year absence. During its absence, the mysterious and fascinating painting of the Piazza San Marco, Looking East, ca. 1722, described by The Burlington Magazine as “a stupendous work,” was reattributed, researched, conserved, and exhibited at the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. The story begins in early 2007 when the painting, at that time believed to have been created by an anonymous Venetian painter, was identified as a rare early Canaletto. After extensive research and review by the most important Canaletto scholars, the attribution was confirmed and the painting was sent to London for an extensive conservation treatment. The newly

identified and beautifully restored painting has now returned to the Music Room for a brief period of public display before being lent to the Yale University Art Gallery for exhibition. Piazza San Marco was purchased as an early work by Canaletto by the Flagler Museum’s founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, in 1964, and was placed on loan to the Museum. The painting remained attributed to Canaletto until 1984, when appraisers reattributed it to an unidentified follower of Venetian view painter Francesco Guardi. The painting was later donated to the Museum by Mrs. Matthews’s heirs. The Venetian artist Canaletto (1697-1768) is best known for his scenic views of Venice, especially popular with Englishmen on the Grand Tour. While his mature work

Conservator Viola Pemberton-Pigott and the Flagler Museum’s Chief Curator Tracy Kamerer with Piazza San Marco.

displays a more polished style, his early style until ca. 1726 is more freely handled and less hard-edged. Because they are rare and relatively unknown, early Canalettos have been commonly misattributed to other artists. The recent reattribution was initially proposed in early 2007 by Derek Johns, an old master paintings expert and dealer in London. Soon after the world’s leading Italian view painting scholars vetted the work and agreed with Johns’ attribution. These experts included Bozena Anna Kowalczyk, an Italian scholar and curator based in Venice, who is the foremost authority on Canaletto’s early style; Charles Beddington, an old master paintings dealer in London who is a recognized expert in Venetian view painting; and Edgar Peters Bowron, Curator of European Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, a specialist in eighteenth-century Italian art. Ms. Kowalczyk, whose 2001 ground-breaking exhibition Canaletto Prima Maniera [Canaletto: First Style] brought the artist’s early style to the attention of

the scholarly world, carried out extensive research on the painting for the Flagler Museum, identifying it as an historically significant work – one of Canaletto’s earliest works, and his first painting of his most characteristic and popular subject, the Piazza San Marco looking east towards the basilica. She was also able to date the work to ca. 1722 based on physical evidence in the painting and details of the piazza and buildings. Ms. Kowalczyk was also able

to trace the history of the painting’s ownership. The canvas was purchased (and likely commissioned) from Canaletto directly by Prince Joseph Wenzel of Liechtenstein, one of fourteen views of Venice by Canaletto acquired by him before 1750. It remained in the Liechtenstein collection until 1953, when it was sold to an unidentified private collector. Ms. Kowalczyk obtained key information from the Archives of the Galerie Liechtenstein, Vienna, documenting the history of the painting while in the Liechtenstein collection. Archival evidence indicates that the unusual appearance of Canaletto’s early style caused the collection’s experts to question Canaletto’s authorship, likely resulting in its sale. Piazza San Marco was purchased between 1953 and 1963 by Colonel Owen Hill Kenan, first cousin of Henry Flagler’s widow, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. Jean Flagler Matthews subsequently purchased the canvas from the Owen Kenan estate auction in 1964. The painting had been damaged and heavily over-painted during

Conservator Viola Pemberton-Pigott, curator Bozena Anna Kowalczyk, and the Flagler Museum’s Chief Curator Tracy Kamerer at the opening of CanalettoGuardi: The Two Masters of Venice.

its history, in large part due to the misunderstanding of Canaletto’s early style. Piazza San Marco required extensive conservation work to return the canvas to its original appearance. The conservation work was performed in London by Viola Pemberton-Pigott, former Senior Picture Conservator for the Royal Collection and a recognized expert on the conservation of Canaletto’s paintings. Ms. Pemberton-Pigott’s work revealed a number of significant discoveries regarding the creation and history of the painting, and her skill as a conservator brought about a stunning result. Piazza San Marco has regained its original beauty, and provides important information about the young Canaletto’s working methods. In addition to having the painting

conserved, the Museum acquired a more appropriate period Venetian frame. The painting was probably removed from its original frame and placed in an eighteenthcentury French style frame after it left the Liechtenstein collection in 1953. The Museum located and acquired a perfectly sized, eighteenth-century Venetian frame for Piazza San Marco, which accents the composition beautifully.

(September 13, 2012 – January 21, 2013), curated by Ms. Kowalczyk, compared and contrasted views by Canaletto and Guardi. The Burlington Magazine considered the Museum’s painting “one of the highlights of the show.” CanalettoGuardi was one of five exhibitions nominated for the prestigious 2013 Globes de Cristal award, presented by the French press for excellence in arts and culture.

News of the freshly conserved and reframed Piazza San Marco quickly circulated in scholarly circles and the painting is already in demand. The canvas recently made its public debut in an important exhibition at the Musée Jacquemart-André, a late-nineteenth century historic house museum in Paris. The critically-acclaimed CanalettoGuardi: The Two Masters of Venice

Piazza San Marco will be on display in Whitehall’s Music Room this spring, and then will be on loan to the newly reinstalled eighteenthcentury grand tour galleries at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.
