Collections on the Move This year several pieces from the collection of the Flagler Museum are being featured in exhibitions at other institutions. Four paintings by pioneering female artist Laura Woodward (American, 1834-1926) are appearing in Behold, A New Eden: Laura Woodward and the Creation of Palm Beach at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens until May 6. The works on loan are part of a group of eight rare watercolors in the Museum’s collection by this important artist, who documented Palm Beach in the late nineteenth century. Poinciana on Lake Worth by Woodward will also be included in the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s exhibition Imagining Florida from November 13, 2018 – March 24, 2019. Artifacts and archival items related to the Over-Sea Railroad are on loan to the Keys History and Discovery Center in Islamorada. Florida East Coast Railway china, silver, and a dining car menu help tell the story of the Key West Extension in the exhibition Stories of the Upper Keys, through September 28.

A Hotel Goes to War In January 1944, a wartime wedding was held at the Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine, Florida. First Lt. William A. Bailer, a medical supply officer, and his bride, 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Seybolt, a nurse, had met when both were stationed at the short-lived Ream General Hospital in Palm Beach. From 1942 to 1944, Florida East Coast Hotel Company’s The Breakers in Palm Beach became Ream General Hospital, a military hospital specializing in plastic surgery and neuro-psychiatry. Lt. Bailer created a scrapbook during his time stationed at the hospital documenting the facility’s history.

This scrapbook, along with photographs and related artifacts, were recently acquired by the Flagler Museum Archives. The 75th anniversary of the opening of the hospital, in 2017 provided an opportunity to reflect on the role of The Breakers in the war effort.

In preparation for the forthcoming Allied invasion of North Africa, the United States Army began looking for a hospital venue in Palm Beach in 1942. While various hotels were considered, The Breakers was chosen because its immense size could accommodate between 750 and 1,000 patients. Originally serving only the Army Air Corps, the Army Air Forces Regional Station Hospital accepted its first patients in March, 1943, after extensive renovations. Six months later it became a general military hospital and was quickly renamed Ream General Hospital, after the first flight surgeon killed during the war. The reconfiguration of The Breakers into a hospital was extensive. The hotel bar was converted into a library and officers’ club, one of the ballrooms became a chapel and performance venue, and the mezzanine was transformed into operating rooms. The nearby Breakers Cottages served as housing for doctors and nurses. There was even a large dental clinic and maternity ward. The hotel’s extensive grounds provided soldiers

with ample space for exercise, and drilling.

recovery,

The local community was heavily involved in the activities of the hospital. Palm Beach designer and architect John L. Volk headed the transformation of the hotel and later converted the hospital back into a hotel. Locals assisted as nurses’ aides and ambulance drivers, and one anonymous local resident paid to install speakers in all the rooms so that the soldiers could listen to radio broadcasts. At least twelve babies, fondly known as “Breakers Babies,” were born at the facility. As it did during the hotel years, Ream General Hospital hosted numerous dignitaries. Noted Hollywood entertainers such as Jeanette MacDonald performed for the convalescing troops, and senators Claude Pepper and Harry Truman visited. Eleanor Roosevelt inspected the hospital in March 1944. By November 1943, newspapers hinted that the hospital might close. The Army contemplated keeping the hospital, but the lack of air conditioning, the annual rent, and the abundance of other hospitals led them to abandon the facility. Lt. Bailer’s scrapbook documents the lengthy, and occasionally tense, discussions regarding the hospital’s future, as well as its day-to-day operations. Although both politicians and locals spoke out vehemently in favor of the hospital, in April, 1944, its closing was announced, and by late August the building was vacated. The FEC Hotel Company desired to transform the Breakers back to its famed role as a luxurious, worldclass hotel, which it did by the end of that year.

A Season of Success! Flagler Museum Music Series On March 6, the Henschel Quartett wrapped up another spectacular Flagler Museum Music Series. With help from our generous sponsors Roe Green, PNC, The MBS Family Foundation, and Palm Beach Daily News, the Museum was able to bring some of the most highly regarded names in chamber music to south Florida. Each performance included a post-concert champagne and dessert reception with the musicians. The Series earned reviews such as, “Young Tesla Quartet opens Flagler’s 2018 series in fine fashion” from Marcio Bezerra with the Palm Beach Daily News and “Prima Trio brings zest and brilliance to Flagler Series” from Dennis Rooney writing for Palm Beach ArtsPaper. Top Left: Music Series sponsor Roe Green and the Boston Trio. Center Left: Henschel Quartett during their performance at Whitehall. Bottom Left: Chuck Hagy and students from the Benjamin Middle School with Dr. Christopher Capozzola. Center Right: In her lecture, Dr. Jennifer Keene discussed what it meant for Americans ‘to go to war.’

Whitehall Lecture Series In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I in 1917, the Flagler Museum presented a Lecture Series dedicated to the heroes who defended this great nation. Heroes of the Homefront: World War I and the Faces of Wartime America presented a unique range of historical perspectives, including those of political and military leadership, the Doughboys on the front lines, minority infantrymen conscripted to battle, and women on the homefront and abroad. Thank you to our generous sponsors - The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Hilton West Palm Beach, and The Palm Beach Post - for helping to bring such important topics into the spotlight this season!

Fortnightly, Reimagined On Thursday, March 8, the Flagler Museum hosted “Fortnightly, Reimagined” in Whitehall’s Music Room. While the founding date is unknown, the Fortnightly Club was an association that held meetings in private homes around Palm Beach until 1908. Mary Lily Kenan Flagler was known to have hosted a few meetings of the club in the Music Room. Meetings generally consisted of a keynote talk, performances of singing, piano, or poetry, and refreshments. The initial aim of the Fortnightly Club was to host entertaining programs and even vie for social standing. Today, the Flagler Museum launches a new tradition of the Fortnightly Club with guest performers and diverse programming around the house.

Raymond Hawkins, Carina Sturdy and Dr. Timothy Olsen.

“Fortnightly, Reimagined” featured a musical performance on Whitehall’s original 1,249-pipe Odell organ by faculty and students from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Music, and readings of original correspondence and newspaper articles related to life at Whitehall and in Palm Beach from the Flagler Museum’s Archives. Timothy Olsen serves a joint faculty position as Kenan Professor of Organ at UNCSA and Associate Professor of Organ at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. He also serves as Cantor (Organist/Music Director) at Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, where he oversees a thriving music program. Also performing with Dr. Olsen were Ms. Carina Sturdy and Mr. Raymond Hawkins. Ms. Sturdy is a senior studying organ performance under Dr. Olsen and serves as organist at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC. Mr. Hawkins is a junior at the UNC School of the Arts. He served as organist at First Baptist Church of Holly Hill, SC, before moving to Winston-Salem, where he held posts as music intern at Augsburg Lutheran Church and as organist at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. The organ was commissioned for Henry Flagler by Whitehall’s interior design team, Pottier & Stymus, on May 3, 1901, from J.H. & C.S. Odell Company, New York. It was designed, and the construction supervised, by Russell T. Joy, at that time the organist of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine. Joy became the Flaglers’ first resident organist and served as Whitehall’s musical director until 1906. The organ’s façade was designed in the French Second Empire style of the Music Room, a style preferred for theaters and opera houses during the Gilded Age.

Museum Staff Advancement Janel Trull Associate Curator The Flagler Museum is pleased to announce that Janel D. Trull has been promoted from Assistant Curator to Associate Curator. This change reflects her great work, and the increasing responsibilities she has undertaken during her nearly 4 ½-year tenure at the Museum.

Jo Ann Jackson Lead Museum Custodian Jo Ann Jackson has been promoted to the newly created position of Lead Museum Custodian. In addition to custodial duties, she will take on new responsibilities including daily scheduling for the custodial team, training, and record keeping. Jo Ann’s skills, experience, and dedication to the Museum make her a natural fit for the position.

Mary Lam Visitor Services Coordinator As the Visitor Services Coordinator Mary Lam is directly involved in evaluating and improving the overall visitor experience. Mary is responsible for training and scheduling Visitor Services personnel and coordinating Front Gate operations. She recently took on the added responsibility of overseeing the Museum’s Docent Team, bringing all visitor services under her expert management.

With his knowledge of Whitehall and the facility’s grounds, he is the perfect choice for the position of Security Supervisor. Hector is responsible for managing the Museum’s team of security officers, as well as making sure that the Museum has proper safety procedures and equipment in place at all times.

In 2016, the party was held in the recently-restored Cocoanut Grove and featured drinks, entertainment, and décor that were tropically inspired and offered some educational history of Palm Beach’s first Cocoanut Grove at Henry Flagler’s Hotel Royal Poinciana. This year, the Museum is looking forward to spotlighting the rich and illustrious paintings and etchings of Ignaz Gaugengigl, on view in the second floor exhibition gallery. Cocktails, ambiance, and entertainment, all designed to enhance the experience and bring the art to life, will be featured during a reception held in the Lake Room and Terrace. Founder’s Day

Tuesday, June 5, 12:00 - 5:00 pm Free Admission On June 5 each year, the Flagler Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, and Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. Visitors may take a selfguided tour of Whitehall’s first floor, view the permanent collection of art and objects related to the Gilded Age, and climb aboard Henry Flagler’s private railcar in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Whitehall was built by Standard Oil partner Henry Flagler in 1902, and stands as an example of the nation’s rise to the pinnacle of human invention and artistic achievement. Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, rescued the estate from potential demolition and established the Flagler Museum on June 5, 1959. Since then, millions have immersed themselves in the majesty of American life during the Gilded Age. National press praise the Museum’s contribution to history and culture. National Geographic Traveler called the Museum “An absolute mustsee” and Art + Auction magazine proclaimed “everyone should go to the Flagler Museum. It’s one of the greatest Gilded Age mansions in the world.” Founder’s Day offers visitors free access to this National Historic Landmark.

Visitors to Founder’s Day 2017 pose for a photo under the portrait of Jean Flagler Matthews.

Founder’s Day is sponsored by The Palm Beach Post, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council, Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County, and State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Jean Flagler Matthews established the Flagler Museum on June 5, 1959.

Flagler’s Spirit

The Museum collaborated with Renewal Coalition of Jupiter to host a visit of 20 caregivers of wounded veterans on March 10. The Flagler’s Spirit team provided a wonderful tour of Whitehall and a tea lunch in the Café des Beaux-Arts. “Their experience at the Flagler Museum was perfect in every way and it truly was the highlight of their entire trip,” commented Renewal Coalition’s Rheanna Pages.
